In high school I discovered WPFW, the Pacifica station in Washington, DC. It changed my life. Aside from the wall-to-wall airplay of jazz, African, Brazilian and other musics of the diaspora (along with copious hours of Black revolutionary commentary), the station and its practitioners put in front of me the opportunity to appreciate for the first time the concept that "radio" can be a verb and not just a noun.

He was playing at Smalls this past Friday, LG. Not sure I'd have gone, a friend had gotten tix from his son (who wanted him out of the apartmant for some time so he could have a party), and he invited me. He's quite a player, but a "fill in all the space" one.

There's the famous story of Miles and Trane when Trane was in Miles' band, dialog went...
While he was a member of the Davis quintet, the temperamental and often explosive Davis confronted Coltrane about their duration. "I don't know what it is," Coltrane told Davis. "It seems like when I get going, I just don't know how to stop." Davis said, "Why don't you try taking the horn out of your mouth?"

This year has been such a disaster re: broken bones in my circle, so fullest sympathies to her and big love to Jeff amid the gut-wrenching adrenaline that must've sparked.

And thanks, Doug, for swinging in Spider-Man style!

Jeff's wife was out walking the dog when she sprained her ankle. Jeff had to dash out with the car to pick up her and the dog.

Then the dog needed to go out to finish is business.

Now it seems the sprain might be something more in need of immediate attention.

So here we are!

Thanks for that link, DJpeterDE, though I'm not sure that Miles' leaning on the pianist when showing him the "crunchy" voicings he wanted means he was nice to them (you could interpret it just as easily as a Power Move...)
