A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey there, The Troubled and Trouble.

Picked up from the library Chelsea Manning’s book “README.txt” Illuminating foray into her decision to join the military (mostly to impress her abusive military Dad), rough abusive alcoholic parents family life (incidentally, her Mom is Welsh, who met her Dad while stationed there), the heinous, wildly invasive broad sweep of the surveillance state and of course the causal atrocity committed by the military - all in the name of “keeping us safe” and the War of Error. Of course throughout is her private struggle with her identity.
Very brave, conscientious, empathetic soul.
Epochal hero truly, like Julian Assange and Edward Snowden.
Love the choices as usual, Trouble.

Re: jury duty. Seems pretty universal that nearly everyone would like to avoid it. For many reasons. Not the least of which is that the “system” could correctly be seen simultaneously as intimidating (or yucky) and inefficient.
But I’ve come to believe that what the system needs is more thinking, compassionate and empathetic people who decide the fate of people being tried on the Injustice System.
Think we should participate. Especially when you think of all those sitting around in fear, watching cable tv and reading reactionary propaganda all day, who would readily show up just as they would to sit at Dunkin Donuts all day.

Got voir dired out on my first jury duty call in 2000, and had wild freelance schedules in 2015 at my next call. Would otherwise have been up for participating.

On it's own the phrase "the new brunette" makes me think the narrator prefers brown hair and has had a string of seemingly replaceable girlfriends. Like "this week's flavor". (And yes, it's antiquated). But I have trouble fitting that in with the song. In the first line the narrator is excited to be sleeping "here in this new room", so it doesn't seem like he's been with Shirley very long. So maybe Shirley herself is the new brunette. Maybe the last line is shifts to a different narrator, who is telling Billy to give his greetings? That's the best I can come up with.

However, the record cover might support the hair-dye theory i.discogs.com...

I’ve been on the lookout but unsuccessful in finding a better description of American schools than George Carlin’s:
“...the indoctrination center where your child is sent to be stripped of his individuality and turned into a mindless, obedient member of the American consumer society.”

I might only switch out individuality with creativity or open-mindedness.

K8 was asked -- by a TEACHER -- to justify why their students should study drama and writing plays and how that could help them in later life. When it's one of the only things in schools that can possibly help them -- by showing ways out of the indoctrination center!

Just catching up on chat. It is DISGUSTING how much the arts are underfunded in public schools. I was VERY lucky to grow up with a fantastic local school district -- when I was in High School my school was rated one of the top 20 in the whole country for public schools. I was a good student, but some of my favorite classes were art, band (saxophone), and Library Day. We used to have 8 different language classes, now the district has gone down the toilet due to underfunding and they cut back most of the fun stuff and the only languages available are Spanish and French. I, OTOH,took 6 years of German between grades 7-12, and took 4 credits of it in college, just to keep it up. Fast forward to me in my early 40's....wound up taking the ALTA for some of my temp gigs in German, instant eligibility to earn 3x the hourly English rate. And I still know a few Rilke poems by heart. AND it opened up the city of Berlin for me...my 2nd favorite city on Earth. You've met me IRL; NOBODY thought I was a tourist, especially since I went off season on the times I've been, and it's a glorious sense of freedom to be able to navigate a second city like a native (I got tons of tips from Alexander Hacke of Einstuerzendene Neubauten, and actually met up with him and his partner a few times for clubbing and brunch). Not needing English meant being able to go to the tiniest galleries and holes in the wall. Only ONCE was I ever offered a menu in English, and I politely declined (plus at most kneips it's better to order the daily special anyway, regardless of what it is, for lunch--something like whatever you get and a 6-oz draft beer for $5). But I digress. One intellectual curiosity leads to another, which opens door after door. My Mom, may she rest in peace, was still doing Road Scholar courses online and watching TED talks and stuff on her phone WHILE SHE WAS IN HOSPICE. She wanted to keep learning until the very end, and she did. And that's the right way to live. Thank you and thank you for coming to my TED talk.

DeSatan is gonna feel real sorry when most Florida students can't get accepted to out of state colleges, and licensing boards for licensed fields (law, medicine, etc) start pulling schools' accredations. Can confirm that the ABA in particular Does Not Play RE letting low quality schools give valid law degress.

When the principal at the highly touted elementary school literally a block and a half away from us was giving her introduction speech to parents on the cusp of entering school she said the work “success” repeatedly, but with no emotion or context. Just that that’s what they were grooming the kids for. The most nebulous and empty thing I could imagine. (I’d also heard from friends with older kids already there that at graduation they sing God Bless America).
We looked at each other and decided that place wasn’t for our children.
No f’n way. I don’t care how many awards they’ve gotten.
