I understand that in clear, high-visibility daylight conditions, one can fly a plane by "VFR" (Visual Flight Rules). If you're socked in by a bunch of fog and suchlike cloudy stuff and can't see properly, you're required to fly by "IFR" (Instrument Flight Rules).

But if you can't see a thing, yet don't have working necessary instruments (either because they broke, or because your plane's just not so equipped, or because the weather came in unexpectedly) –

you find yourself flying by the seat of your pants, and that's a perilous thing – exciting in the bad way.
