It can be a little pricey but I love Fairway for its brand of olive oil. I'm sad that all the non-Manhattan stores closed due to hedge-fund-related over-expansion. There's a Food Bazaar in the old Fairway Red Hook spot now and it tries to be similar, but it has no Fairway olive oil, so it's not the same.

Dean:

In fact, Whole Foods is not always more expensive than other chain supermarkets or even Trader Joe's. Depends on the item and the sale price, if one applies. I buy selectively from Whole Foods--even though I hate the whole concept of the place--because it's walking distance from my joint and prices are *sometimes* competitive.
Avatar 11:14pm
northguineahills:

in walking distance, outside of the Family Dollar, I just have a Korean supermarket which is great for Korean/Japanese/Taiwanese/Filipino/Vietnamese groceries, which is my wheelhouse, but pricey...(so for most other people in my hood, the Family Dollar is where they get 'groceries'. Yes, a food desert....

I'm curious about pricing decisions and conditions.. An entirely local coop food market has a few things I looked at that were absurdly more than standard stores -- a typically five-dollar item for over nine dollars, for example. Without the same traffic and margins and power of scale, I understand some difference. But it was such a long, long mile of difference that it would make the purchase of those items from them a bizarre choice.

i worked for a guy who was charging ~$1.35 (?) /can of knudsen soda when at nearby supermarkets they were ~65¢ each. he barely sold any because he wasn't making deals, buying in quantity, refused to take less than the standard mark-up...and was so foolish as to think his loyal customers wouldn't shop anywhere else.
