Meanwhile, right next door (to last week's spot) ... The Dale Theatre, aka "The Dale" back in its salad days -- cinematreasures.org... -- in 1970 it was the target not just a bombing attack, but a -simultaneous- attack along with the Loew's Paradise up on Grand Concourse -- read all about it! archive.is... -- see also the fascinating commentary in the Cinema Treasures page, including a snippet from someone who claimed to be at the theater the night of the attack

Woah, that's some fascinating history, headcleaner. Couldn't tell from the Cinema Treasures page what the motive was behind the bombing. Were you able to glean that info at the other link?
  10:02pm
headcleaner:

The motive isn't apparent in the NYT article, either ... so we'll have to leave that question open to an other intrepid explorer

Victory Boulevard has Joe and Pats, my favorite thin crust pizza.
There's a nice (small) zoo on Clove Road, and a very nice park (Clove Lake Park) near the zoo. There's probably more, but I work there, live in Central New Jersey-if I go anywhere in off time, it's usually Manhattan (or Brooklyn).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

I recently took the Staten Island Ferry with some friends just to get ice cream at the Dairy Queen in the ferry terminal. Not sure if you all are familiar with Dairy Queen. It is an ice cream chain originally from Minnesota. Anyway, the Dairy Queen in the Staten Island Ferry Terminal on SI is the only one in NYC.

There's good Sri Lankan in northern Staten Island as well, as I recall.

had to confirm but the ice cream place attached to the dunkin donuts near me is in fact a baskin robbins not a dairy queen. also surprised there wouldn’t be more in nyc.
this reminds me of when there was a tim horton’s open near union square for a bit.

DQ opened in my MA town when I was very young, and it was all about ice cream and ice cream treat concoctions and variants. The concept of DQ as a more general fast food burger-and-fries joint was new to me when I encountered it that way, in its outlets and significant advertising, in midwest and other places since -- the beyond-ice cream versions sometimes identified with "DQ Brazier" distinction, while the ones such as my hometown's are "treat only."
Is this show Brazier or treat only?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

Great question, SBP. This show is "grill-and-chill," which is what the DQs with food were, unfortunately, called when I was growing up in Minnesota.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm

Hey, NGH! I was bummed to learn on my recent trip on the ferry that they no longer have the snack booth on the ferry. Apparently, COVID took them out.

My son goes to the DQ in Portland, OR, when he's there to visit his cousins. Took him and his seventh grade sister today to UCLA. We're sitting at LAX. His sister and I will travel back home to Berkeley. He's taking a three-legged red-eye to Appleton, WI, via Cincinnati and the Twin Cities to see a small liberal arts college there with my wife (his mom), who is at a reunion there.

In Appleton, Lawrence University. They have a strong music conservatory, but my son is not a musician. Minneapolis is just a layover airport.
  10:59pm
Dean:

But if you have good words for Macalester, I'd be interested in hearing them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Sam Segal:

Oh gotcha. I have heard of Lawrence too. But my main association with Appleton is that Willem Dafoe is from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Sam Segal:

I almost went to Macalester, but didn't because of the price tag. Opted for the University of Minnesota instead. Macalester is in a beautiful area of St. Paul where my grandfather has lived for many years.

And Houdini, I think, too? They at least have a museum there.

I bet Minnesota was great, too. One of my colleagues went to law school there, and my boss was their foreign, comparative, and international law librarian for a while.

Dean, Exciting! I don't know anything about most of those schools. UCLA is a good one and I know a lot of people who graduated from there who are doing well in Los Angeles. But personally I liked going to undergrad in a smaller town. I feel like the school blends in to LA at large and the kids miss out a little. Not to knock it. Just something I've felt. Everyone has their own needs and priorities.
