Yes!! Somehow just learned that Rick Froberg also did the album art for Yank Crime. Great record cover.

good evening Sam, horsepeople

Nice background work on Jehu and Pitchfork, Sam. Will we hear Night Soil Man next?

greetings DJ SS and all,

first i’m really hearing these groups and about rick froberg (RIP). happy to learn of him even under bummer circumstances. NPR calls him “the perfect punk vocalist”

“But Froberg's voice was unmistakable — not trying to sound tough on purpose, it just ended up that way. The voice that somehow always sounded like a skinny old man who smoked too many cigarettes and drank too much whiskey.”

Welcome, Carmichael! I don’t know Night Soil Man actually. Is that a band or a song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Sam Segal:

↳ zzz @10:13
Wow, that’s a perfect description, zzz. Thanks for linking that obit. I hadn’t seen it yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm also not at all familiar with any of those 3 bands (i'd heard of hot snakes but never familiarized)

...i saw a reference to Rick Froberg upon entering and hesitated... wasn't a Froberg one of the useless later members of the grateful dead or something?

↳ Song: "Rainha Ietu" by "Joy Artur"
summer is definitely the time for the sweet angola sounds
  10:21pm

Mike Kennedy and Mark Trombino (the other two Jehus) came from Night Soil Man, yet another SD hardcore band. I thought maybe you were doing the completionist thing …
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

(Friberg; Freeberg... something like that. or i've imagined it.)

garcia and some of the others played with david bromberg in the 70s …?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

zzz no, and i like Bromberg alright!
no i think it was a keyboard player - which is something that never served them well in anyone's hands, in my opinion - after Pig Pen checked out.

I marvel at Jerry's musicality. I remember vaguely admiring it in the mid-'70s in high school. Now I'm just floored by the way he measures playfulness and focus.

nicely said, early/mid ‘70s especially for that. i just saw a totally incredible david murray performance last week and couldn’t help but thinking about the Murray sit-in with the dead (in 1993)

I couldn’t pick between that track and the one I played last week when I first programmed that album for the show. Figured I’d just play both of them. Really interesting album front-to-back. The title track is the only one with vocals.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Sam Segal:

Oh wow, didn’t know that was Brock Peters but I absolutely loved that narration. The Jack Johnson Recordings boxed set was a seminal listening experience when I first got into jazz in middle school. The fusion of that record was a perfect bridge from the jam bands I’d been listening to. Always dug that spoken bit.

Dean:

I haven't listened to that Workman record in ages. Need to retrieve it and play it again.

Thanks, zzz, but I am by no means the person to clarify the provenance of Miles' work. I'm a latecomer to most of it, as is also the case with much of the Dead.
