' While The Rolling Stones were promoted as the Demonic counterpart to The Beatles' Angelic image - The Pretty Things were an even scruffier (unkempt) & (for the time) longer haired & wilder answer to the Stones (who therefore casually but all too effectively suppressed the Pretty Things' career advancement on popular TV programs, what have you...) & I wonder if they ever made it to the USA @ all in the British Invasion (I'm not aware they ever did...)
& musically - they were powerful & significant with a style pitched somewhere twixt the Stones' Bluesy insouciance & TheWho's loud anarchic energy. Without being too much like either of them enuff to prevent them from being distinct.
In fact I think of them as the UK act most parallel to the USA's Garage bands in sound & attitude - which is to say, ProtoPunk. (Tho I'm actually sure there are many examples of UK bands that might - however briefly - qualify. [Troggs being intentionally retrogressive & reductive, ferinstance.] & of course - the transatlantic influences in both directions were so prominent as to be virtually impossible to untangle. Tho the UK Freakbeat [Mods on acid, manner of speaking] counterpart to U.S. GaragePsych was notably often more stylish & refined in conception & in the Studio...) '
...Anything salient to add via you Hipsters ? :D
