Hey, LB(tP), just wanted to say I think it's great you did those editions of Brockden Brown. I think there was no critical infrastructure when I read him. I had to range across the moors in celerity and silence all on my own.

There are a couple Longfellow connections too. He was going to adapt the novel about her (The Coquette) into a play, apparently. And he mentions the protagonist of that novel (Eliza Wharton) in his own novel, Kavanaugh. Or her wax figure anyway. And some people think he may have had her in the back of his mind when he wrote Evangeline, but I think that's a little bit of a stretch.

fun stories about this: the headstone was chipped away by tourists during the 19th century. in one newspaper report, the groundskeeper of the cemetery was said to be a little worried that an association of teachers or librarians (can't remember) was going to meet in Salem, and he knew they'd all come after her headstone, so he scattered a bunch of freestone chips around the grave to make it easier for them and to try to preserve the actual stone. The new marker was put up in this century and funnily enough is designed to look like the headstone from the novel. It even preserves a few of the word changes between the original headstone and the version in the novel. Fun place to visit if you're ever in Peabody/Danvers/Salem area.
