Tonight we're on "Summer Vacation," so we're just listening to some movies on the radio. This week: two features with Box 13 Star, Alan Ladd!

Oh yeah, there were lots of Westerns in the OTR days. As well as film adaptations - with the original casts!

I think... and I could be wrong... but a few of the original cast are reunited for this show. I'm not the biggest fan of "Shane," but it's not bad, and I do love Alan Ladd.

Yeah, I do love that voice. And the musical sting when Shane says his name is pretty great.

If I recall correctly, I think Bill Hicks had a routine that involved some riffs on Alan Ladd in Shane. I haven't listened to him in years, but I seem to recall it was pretty good.

A nun once told me that if you see a face down penny on the ground you flip it and it brings good luck to you and the next person.

Austin Rich:

This broadcast aired two years after "Shane" was released in theaters. Originally, Montgomery Cliff was cast as the lead, but the move was delayed for so long, he backed out. Alan Ladd was then cast, and reshoots / editing caused the film to take two years longer than expected. (Principle filming was done in 1951.)

"Lucky Penny." I never heard the "flip it" version. Only that if you saw one "heads" up, it was good luck. Now I know why!

I think mom and dad are falling in love with Shane, too. Why not? There's plenty of Shane to go around.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

This part of the story is set during the Fourth of July, so we're playing this close to an appropriate time of year... right?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Austin Rich:

The principle complaint here is that this cattle rancher is angry that other people are putting up fences, preventing him from taking his cattle to water. Out here, in this neck of the woods, we had a problem with this exact argument, that led to a government stand-off with the ranchers, who occupied public buildings to make their point.

↳ Song: ""Shane"" by "Lux Radio Theater"
From Wikipedia, regarding Ruth Hussey: "She filled in for Jean Arthur in the 1955 Lux Radio Theater presentation of Shane, playing Miriam Starrett, alongside the film’s original stars Alan Ladd and Van Heflin."

Not familiar with Jean Arthur besides what I'm reading today on Wikipedia but seems Shane, the movie, was her last major role.

Van Heflin, Alan Ladd's co-star in this movie, was well known on The Radio as the voice of Phillip Marlowe. But he also did a lot of other guest-star roles, which are all quite enjoyable.

Famously, Bogart was not interested in doing a Casablanca radio show, in spite of being asked to turn it into a series. His compromise, many years later, was to do "Bold Venture," which took some gimmicks from a few of his films, and sort of mashed them all together, which we've been listening to on this show, as one of our Hour 1 features.
Avatar 10:04pm

Alan Ladd as "Rick"? Not Humprhey Bogart? Does not compute!

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Austin Rich:

Radio did finally get their "Casablanca" radio series, in the form of a show called, "Rocky Jordan," with the lead played by Jack Moyles, and briefly by George Raft. Rocky Jordan is often embroiled in local and international political problems, and is an American ex-pat who runs a place called Café Tambourine, much like Rick's Place. I've played a lot of Rocky Jordan in the past, but I think I'll will air the show, chronologically, when Bold Venture wraps up.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Austin Rich:

I'm not sure this is the best "drunk" acting I've heard, but it is sort of charming to hear Alan try. His character on Box 13 is pretty straight, so I wonder if he just wasn't good at drunk acting?

I just got several boxes of Heavy Metal magazines / comics from a friend. We were doing Heavy Metal lines on the radio last night, on my other OTHER show.

That movie rules.

ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

True. Loc-Nar also makes an appearance in This Island Earth.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

While "Shane" is not my fave western, it's not bad, and it's a classic of the canon, and very well loved by film nerds.

However, I really love "Casablanca," and while this version is weird, I don't mind it. I usually don't go for any of that "best movie ever" nonsense, and usually the ones mentioned as "best" are anything but. However, I think "Casablanca" does hold up pretty well, and is VERY good. Even in this form.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

↳ ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova @10:27
Is that a "This Island Earth" reference? I guess I missed that. I only remember the MST3K version of that movie... I don't think I've seen the original version of that since I was a teen.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Austin Rich:

A few times during this show, you'll hear the sound "shift." Since these songs were on transcription discs, and since this was an "hour long" show, to play the whole show was a couple discs. Often, when they had to "flip" the disc over, you can hear the sound change, slightly.

I suspect that Theora would be a tinkerer too, sort of like Bryce. Has her own lab, can fix trains and steam powered stuff. Probably works for the proper newspaper in town, not the "indie" press.

I do feel that the world missed an opportunity to do a story set in the US, before The Wizard of Oz, with Frank Morgan playing Professor Marvel. I always liked the idea of him traveling the country, getting into scrapes, coning his way out of trouble.
