This was my first venture into Mile Davis. I was about 12 - had been playing horn for a bit and was trying to nail "So What" because the high school jazz band played it... and I wanted a shot. I was a solid 3rd chair player - that ended up being a great spot for me.

Kim, I think mine was Four And More - I was taking drum lessons from someone who played it for me and stressed that Tony Williams was all of 17 years old when it was recorded. Of course I myself never came anywhere close to that level of proficiency and just plain awesomeness.

Good Morning, Polyus -
Amazing. My challenge was that even though Bill (my trumpet teacher and band leader was wonderful). The expectation for "how I should play" didn't always allow me to learn and appreciate my "non-genius" approach to the instrument. Because I couldn't perform like Davis - I would at time be afraid to try and improvise. Music education is tricky on many levels.

Indeed, and I was always jealous of the kids from big school districts that actually funded their music programs. I wasn't even in HS band sophomore thru senior year because we moved to a town that pretty much had no band to speak of. I still practiced on my own time but missed out on a ton of instruction and experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am
KimSorise:

It accesses a vulnerability in students that we may not be ready for - but need.
I was privileged for sure to be a product of a well funded band program that gave me incredible opportunity.
