US Air Force denies AI drone attacked operator in test (BBC, June 2, 2023): “A US Air Force colonel ‘mis-spoke’ when describing an experiment in which an AI-enabled drone opted to attack its operator in order to complete its mission, the service has said.” (It was a “thought experiment,” apparently.)

not a specific question, but could we have an episode or time devoted to the benefits of technology vs. the risks and dangers? i.e. some people who are neurodiverse/suffering conditions may benefit more from things like AR/VR and decide it's worth the risk of privacy to be an early adopter

Feynman has a story about Orthodox Jews saying the reason you cant flip an electric switch on Shabbos is that it might make a spark, which to them is starting a fire, which is doing work.Feynman said, if you just put a capacitor in sequence, it'll never spark. They didn't want too hear that.

Mark, what I've been thinking about a lot lately is, are we starting to see the tide turn regarding tech, surveillance, and how much rests on it? It seems like with Muskrat's purchase of Twitter, the backlash you covered last week in Toronto and other places, the AI failures Ken talked about two weeks ago, and the plethora of books warning against tech surveillance et al, people are starting to pay attention. Could this lead to some legislation and a more widespread abandonment of social media? Are there signs of hope? Maybe a discussion of that.
