Back in the... 80s??? (clearly impossible) I heard an avant garde jazz duo with a well-known saxophonist and Steve McCall. I soon decided that the saxophonist was Not Good (possibly some physical problems I don't know about) and wondered if i should leave. But I just listened to the drums and was fascinated during the rest of the concert. So, Steve McCall really made it concrete for me what a great drummer could do (other than "keeping time," etc.). I mention this, of course, because McCall is not on this track. But he was fantastic, and I still mourn his way too early death.
