Does "equus" have an etymological link to "equity"?

Good question, Dean. Is there a linguist in the house? Somebody get the linguist!
  10:08pm
Dean:

Is there a ... dang, what's another word for "linguist"? ... in the house?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
pot8o:

↳ Dean @10:06
equity comes from a latin homophone, "aequus" meaning equal
Avatar 10:11pm
northguineahills:

no soy sinoliano, pero, conozco algunos buenos guanatuense folk/urbanos contemporáneos.
  10:13pm
Dean:

That really helps, pot8o, because the word has taken on so many curious connotations. My focus on equity has little to do with DEI "equity," more to do with Anglo-American legal "equity." The latter has little to do with equality; the former, perhaps, does.

equus and aequus (equity) are not cognate, no matter the similar spelling in latin and other indo-european languages...

I think regional music is the way most people call it in Mexico. Corridos tumbados is a growing niche that's sort of developing into its own thing.

  10:18pm
Dean:

I bristle at the notion of "performative," for two reasons. J.L. Austin's How To Do Things With Words invokes the notion, but to my mind the whole notion of "speech acts" is baloney. And then there's Judith Butler, who uses it in a different way, one that I have a hard time accepting. I'm sure there are other takes on "performative."

Thanks, NGH. I figured as much, but thought I'd ask.

Anyone can pretend to be a linguist with the help of the Etymology section on most Wiktionary entries, Dean. Which inform us that, though their latin roots are quite similar -- 'aequus' (the root of 'equity') and 'equus' have divergent roots. In particular 'equus' can be traced to the PIE root 'h₁éḱwos' which has cognates meaning the same thing (horse) in Persian, Sanskrit, Armenian, etc. While the roots of 'equus' are apparently unknown.

I have to say, YLT I'd one of those bands I really tried to like, but they just don't do it for Me either. Went to their Chanukah show, 12/21, Kaplan jammed endlessly with some other guest guitar player-I left before it ended (hadn't loved the set even before the endless guitar jam).
And, with that, I'll bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight (catch the rest tomorrow, as usual)
