This was the first broadcast made my Orson Welles, and The Mercury Theater on The Air. It was essentially the same crew who were doing his stage shows, a lot of Shakespear produtions, but modernized. So he was approached, about bringing that same style to radio, presenting their style of narrative to wide audiences. So this was the first big taste of Orson Welles that America got.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

Welles had been on radio before, and even had a job in radio for a while in the mid-30's. But his primary experience, where he honed his storytelling style, was in theater. Between 31 and 38, Welles sort of developed into the Orson we know here. I can only imagine the number of stage shows he put on, sort of dialing in his persona.

Funnily enough, my wife and I watched an old Moonlighting episode tonight and there was a cameo from Orson Welles in the beginning of the episode. It was filmed just before his death in 1985. We’ve been enjoying the show in all its cheesy 80’s glory.

It doesn’t take itself seriously and that’s the fun of the show. There are some things that are dated (of course) and the writing/acting can, at times be borderline terrible but we’re embracing it for what it is

The story of Dracula was originally a novel, published in 1897, and a successful stage play had been developed in the late 20's, and was a huge hit. This led to the 1931 version of the story on film, with Bela Legosi portraying the character. This version of the story was the popularly known version in the late 30's. You can tell that this presentation has returned to the novel as source material, as it includes a lot of devices and scenes that are not in the film, and in some ways, aligns more with the 1992 version of the film.

Howard Koch was the writer who worked closely with The Mercury Theater, and adapted most of the stories for radio scripts. Though as I understand it, there was some conversation about the shows they wanted to do, and they perspectives and angles the stories would persue. But Howard Koch deserves the writing credit for Mercury Theater shows.

This was the 17th show they did as The Mercury Theater. A week later, they adapted, "Heart of Darkness," to chilling effect, as well. The last four episodes do not push any boundaries, and are sort of "plain" by comparison to their early work. After that, Welles' show got a sponsor - The Campbell soup company - which loved the publicity from "The War of The Worlds." The Campbell Playhouse show is the same crew of people, and is a good show, too. But like with punk rock: the early shows were better.
