Turns out that there is in fact a large Lidl nearish to me; would have to go to Rego Park for Aldi. Aldi out near where my Mom lived was weird, very hit or miss and a shit-ton of off brand things like weird brands of Cheetos for a buck or whatever.

As you mention, Aldi's branding approach is very off-putting. Unlike its white-collar cousin, Trader Joe's (owned by a different branch of the same German family), every store-brand Aldi item has a random brand name. Lidl is smarter: all the store-brand stuff is simply "by Lidl". Though oddly for a deep-discount store, Lidl also has slightly more brand-name items.

LIDL Works and Performances from the 60s illuminates Immendorff’s formative years by focusing on the works and actions which he called LIDL. This phonetic invention, meant to mimic the sound of a baby’s rattle, was Immendorff’s DADA-like contribution to the revolutionary fervor of the 1960s.

a single experience at Lidl turned me off from them forever. I bought a watermelon from them that looked fine on the outside but was rotten on the inside. It was late when we got home so we didn't empty the car until the next morning only to find the rotten part had worked it's way through the thing overnight and leaked into the carpet. the rotten stuff leaked through the carpet into the padding below so we couldn't get the smell out. had to remove the seats to get to and replace the carpet and padding, plus we needed to let it air out for a week. Cost me about $100 to save $1.00 on a watermelon. So fuck Lidl and their shitty produce. Give me Grocery Outlet any day.

tbh, if I could have gas and there weren't environmental concerns, I'd rather cook with gas. No gas lines in our neighborhood though, probably because the ground and pudding share the same firmness, and you have to give up a child or two to get a propane permit.

We have the same gas stove that was in the apt. when we moved in twenty years ago. NYC has passed some environmental controls that would be the most forward-looking around if there were any enforcement and if the real estate lobby didn't get it pushed back and loopholed every other day.

My wife and I work stupidly long hours a lot of the time so serious cooking hasn't been a priority for a while. She recently moved to part time though and has said she wants to cook a lot more (hence the kitchen knife gift). When we rehabbed the tear-down house that we stupidly didn't tear down we made the kitchen the largest room in the house so the intent is there.

Hello Mary and the 100 percent.
I saw PiL on that tour, a surprisingly good show. Lydon's voice was pretty much shot, but he seemed happy to be there and his enthusiasm was infectious
