Greetings, everybody! Welcome to Day 3 of the Marathon! Special presentation of the show today...which either you'll enjoy immensely or will want to get me fired. (My old listeners from the Midwest will recognize this immediately.) Thank you for your pledge of support! Click that Pledge button! Pledge now, pledge often!

↳ Song: "Route 101" by "Herb Alpert"
one of many songs inspired by driving up the California coast. Should be on everyone's bucket list.

I'll give it my best shot! Feels different doing this somewhere else for the first time in 22 years!

Feels great just to be able to say the word "Pledge" again!
Avatar 4:10pm
Mr Fab:

That's interesting, how come you couldn't say "pledge"?
Avatar 4:13pm
Dr. Jeff:

↳ Mr Fab @4:10
For some odd reason terms such as "pledge" or "membership" (which our listeners were - members) were not to be spoken. No one can explain why current governance of that organization did what they did. Made no sense whatsoever.
Avatar 4:29pm
Dr. Jeff:

PLEDGE NOW! PLEDGE NOW! PLEDGE NOW! PLEDGE NOW! PLEDGE NOW! (subtle hint)

You can't tell from this chat, but I'm happy to report that Dr Jeff's old patients, er, listeners have really been coming thru for us today. Hello, St Louis!

Apologies, Aitch. Method to this madness.

I had two elder brothers, one the elder was Stooges and Led Zeppelin and Bowie.
The others was James Taylor and Doobie brothers. That brother I no longer speak to.
I am now having strong brother-hate feelings I was not expecting.
I shall deal with such issues later by playing a cleansing Let There be Rock by Acca Dacca and all will be well again.

↳ Aitch @5:09
Dr Jeff said that his previous Yacht Rock special at his old special was his most popular show yet "...and I have no idea why." haha. But yes, it is working - been following the donations behind the scenes here, and everyone has been VERY generous.

Southern Cross is arguably the most beautiful of all yacht rock.

Cathy N:

↳ Dr. Jeff @4:13
My understanding (which may not be accurate) is the official explanation is they didn't want the people who couldn't afford the pledge amounts to feel excluded, that they would be included no matter what amount they could afford to donate. The unofficial reason is that "member" isn't merely a term, but if the organization is member supported, the members HAVE CERTAIN RIGHTS as to what happens in the organization. Mere donors (unless I suppose you donate +5 figures) have none, as has been demonstrated.
Avatar 6:06pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Cathy N @6:01
Wow! Really? They were worried that the listeners were going to unionize or sumthin?
Avatar 6:08pm
Dr. Jeff:

↳ Mr Fab @6:06
They were / are afraid that listeners have the potential of having some 'input' in the organization. Some 'community' radio station they are.
  6:12pm
JaydiumCrass:

I still cannot understand their secretiveness if they have nothing to hide.
  6:23pm
Cathy N:

↳ Mr Fab @6:06
During Covid when everything went virtual there was apparently behind the scenes maneuvering with changing the bylaws, and now the Board of Directors is pretty much unaccountable to anyone, amounting to the world's most baffling coup, the point of which, yes, escapes most everyone.
Avatar 6:27pm
Mr Fab:

Lynne in Glen Carbon, Illinois asked: how often does WFMU hold pledge drives?

Only twice a year! Apart from this here two-week Marathon, there is the "silent fundraiser" in Oct (the Hellraiser) where we put the PLEDGE NOW banner up top of every page and hope that you all know what to do.

You won't hear a peep from us any other time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm

↳ Song: "How Long" by "Ace"
is this a mono mix?
Avatar 6:35pm
Dr. Jeff:

↳ Asheville Jon @6:29
It's an .mp3 file but I do believe it's a mono mix.
  6:41pm
Cathy N:

Since you're doing a Yacht Rock special, any chance of sometime doing an 80s show even if you can't do it with Rob Levy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
Asheville Jon:

↳ Dr. Jeff @6:35
thanks. usually it sounds 'bigger'. then again, the whole show has sounded like it's coming through a one speaker transistor radio, so... :)

Maybe down the road, once I get more established. I'll still be doing Megashow spins with Rob at the Royale. Stay tuned...
