The kinds of films he was making in the late 90’s, incidentally with another NYHC bass player who was an old friend and roommate of mine, were of a very particular kind. The two of them being filmed having sex in the same room, attended by various members of the road crew, etc. Some of the scenes were unbelievable.

He has a very distinctive style and sound, not just that one iconic fill in In The Air Tonight. Alas, I think for most of us the terrible transition of 70’s Genesis to 80’s, the decade during which any successful/popular bands were denigrated to their worst, is so offensive that we have the tendency to overlook how really great of a drummer he was (and singer on some of the Genesis stuff). 80’s overproducing, corny fashion, emphasis on materialism and nationalism gave us one of the most bland, milquetoast and cheesy periods of popular music. Don’t think there’s even one example of a successful band in the 70’s becoming better in the 80’s. Which is not to say that there weren’t some interesting things that came out then. Just that they weren’t from established bands with a track record. It was the Lost Era for all of them!

Saw one was NYHC, and had a Drew Stone in it. Could it be? Looked him up and sure enough, filmmaker. That’s how I knew him; not as a bass player. The kinds of films he was making in the late 90’s, incidentally with another NYHC bass player who was an old friend and roommate of mine, were of a very particular kind. The two of them being filmed having sex in the same room, attended by various members of the road crew, etc. Some of the scenes were unbelievable.

He has a very distinctive style and sound, not just that one iconic fill in In The Air Tonight. Alas, I think for most of us the terrible transition of 70’s Genesis to 80’s, the decade during which any successful/popular bands were denigrated to their worst, is so offensive that we have the tendency to overlook how really great of a drummer he was (and singer on some of the Genesis stuff). 80’s overproducing, corny fashion, emphasis on materialism and nationalism gave us one of the most bland, milquetoast and cheesy periods of popular music. Don’t think there’s even one example of a successful band in the 70’s becoming better in the 80’s. Which is not to say that there weren’t some interesting things that came out then. Just that they weren’t from established bands with a track record. It was the Lost Era for all of them!
