also, there's an MSNBC newsguy Chris Hayes who is a dead ringer for Shostakovich before dread wrung him out

Hayes always looked to me like the nice white guy in class who wasn't always entirely forthcoming about his ambitions.

Speaking of driving, friends of mine today took my 13yo daughter out in Santa Fe to teach her how to drive a manual transmission. If you're in the vicinity, I advise you to remain at home.

Totally. The part that's a drag, though, is I get no paid time off from work. And I opted against going in today, too. I live an hour's drive from work, and the forecast was so damn iffy. So, I gotta make it up somehow. I know plenty of other folks have it way worse, but it sucks living so close to the edge.

I feel similarly about Metheny. Love some of the early ECM albums, Song X with Ornette, the Lyle Mays collabs in the 80s, but haven’t heard much from him I’ve dug in recent years…other than that one Zorn Book of Angels album he did.

Exact opposite for me. The earlier it is the less I think, and so the more I accomplish things. As the day wanes I'm thinking and thinking and getting nowhere.

Yeah, it's the damn commute! There are fewer venues close by than what you have, but if I feel like going to Amherst / Northampton / Holyoke it opens things up a bit more. Still, a half-hour drive to either of my two local faves, parking pretty much on-site, nice bathrooms, nice people running the places... I'm pretty damn lucky.

I got a chance to dip into a Steve Reich residency in SF some years ago, he joined in a performance of Clapping Music

Did that too. Don't worry. When I got tired of lying down, though, I'd sit up. I remember being wrapped in a nice blanket during "Airports," but I didn't fall asleep. I was crunchy, though, as if on a late-night LSD excursion, but I wasn't on any drugs at all.

It's ideal. Tangerine Dream's "Stratosfear" helps me write, too. That repetition does the trick with the little grey cells.

I'm turning 50 in a week (I know?!? WTF?!?) But tonight I feel like a teenager. I'm alone in my room, staying up past my bedtime, listening to the radio while I work on art projects. It's sublime. Thank you, Sam.

That picture...I really remember those stores (there was a coffee shop to the right, a very big convent across the street, street, my childhood...)
Thanks Sam!
