"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

'Don Was, the renowned producer and musician who grew up in metro Detroit, met Sinclair when he was 15, at the opening of the Plum Street arts neighborhood in 1967. Sinclair was wearing a purple suit and passing out mimeographed sheets of his poetry. Was calls Sinclair “the coolest guy I ever met,” adding he was more important in shaping the worldview of him and his friends than Bob Dylan or the Beatles.... Sinclair began his college years as a frat boy (Sigma Nu) at conservative Albion College, where, he said, the only beatnik on campus introduced him to “Dig,” Miles Davis’ classic, and hooked him on jazz....'

JA my son is in kindergarten and yesterday he told me that a boy in his class didn’t have anywhere to sit so my son said “you can sit next to me if you want” to which the boy replied “why would you think I would want to sit next to YOU?” It made me so upset. Meanness seems so pointless and I don’t have a good solution for it!

Rachel, it's often difficult to get an answer for it, but it is always the problem of the person being mean. They have something going on with them that they can't handle.

The answer to "Why would someone be so mean?" is often "I don't know"
But we have to rememebr it has nothing whatsoever to do with us.

You are raising a good and kind son, and not everyone will appreciate that, but he knows he did the right thing

Best to you

For me, I keep firmly in my mind that the effort it takes to be mean is wrong. Put that effort into doing something kind for someone or something you appreciate. Mean out loud is not something a good person chooses. It's not something a content person chooses. Mean is as close to evil as anything there is.

I like these suggestions of not letting it deter you from doing the right thing regardless of the meanness, understanding that it is probably coming from a person who is compromised somehow, and using humor! A magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source.
