This episode seems to has dropped the "Perry Shane" premise, and has gone back to the "Rocky works various part time jobs" gimmick. Given how the premise is pretty thin in this show anyway, I'm sometimes surprised they even try to reference it.

This is the second-to-last episode of these series. Since there were 26 episodes, they could play the entire series twice a year, and only have episodes repeat twice a year. Therefore, Rocky Fortune ran on AFRS for YEARS after the final 1954 episode. (Armed Forces Radio Service.) Those episodes were often beefed up with a song from Sinatra's catalog, occasionally songs that related to the stories. Other stations in the US would run Rocky Fortune, too, as Sinatra's fame continues for a long time after this, but since there were no new episodes being made, it was sometimes hard to keep the show on at any given station for very long.

Austin Rich:

Rocky references, "Dimension X," a show that was written by George Lefferts, who also wrote "Rocky Fortune." George Lefferts was mostly known for writing Sci-Fi, but Rocky Fortune was his effort to write something a little different.

Mr. Fab! Thanks for joining us!

I found a podcast that does a good biography of Sinatra (and of Bogart and Bacall), so I might cut those up and run them as segments on this show.

Another "From Here to Eternity" reference. I should have kept count, but there are at least six or so now.

Doesn’t sound like Frank inside the suit, does it?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Austin Rich:

While it is fun to hear Sinatra do this show, and I am a big fan, I can tell why no one wanted to keep going. George had other radio work, Frank was getting Hollywood work and was making hit records again, and on the whole, the timing was only good for a limited time. But it is a nice artifact of a period where this kind of experiment could even happen.

Speaking of endings: we only have four more episodes of "Bold Venture" after this one. I'm also considering a "Bold Venture" zine, but that is on the back-burner.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

I think the one challenge of this show is that, occasionally - for story reasons - Slate and Sailor are supposed to be fighting, or experiencing some sort of tension. While they try... the fact that they are in love with each other is so clear and evident, that those scenes don't always work.

But it's still nice to hear them talk.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

"Bold Venture" had an even longer syndication run after the show wrapped than "Rocky Fortune." There were more episodes, and the "Bogart and Bacall" chemistry was so "in-demand" that stations often wanted to run "Bold Venture" as a regular feature. Their show only had to repeat episodes once every year or so, compared to "Rocky Fortune." Still, the fact that Bogart passed in '57 did have an impact on his popularity on radio and in film.

Oh I agree. When I was planning, someone suggested we play a game where we measure out toilet paper and whoever got closest to fitting the paper around the mom's belly would win. I was aghast and mentioned this was an adoption.

A surprising amount of TP goes into baby shower games....
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

I've said this before, but "The Blue Beetle" really skirts the line between content that is racist. (And there's a pro-America line of thought that gets a little weird.) I make no arguments that The Blue Beetle is essential or worth ignoring its' faults, but hearing some of these caricatures and musical parodies is not great, and I wanna call it out. These shows were written by, and performed by, white Americans, and they didn't really know anything about Chinese culture, aside from stereotypes.

The 80's Blue Beetle is sort of silly... he quips and references Monty Python.. in the 80's he's like a Batman with a sense of humor, and a less grim costume.
