I think the "no-blues" ethos of Velvet Underground really connected with a lot of those groups too, as they looked for a uniquely european form of psychedelic music. That and VU's free mix with avant-garde concepts really dovetailed with their proximity to Stockhausen

when I picked this LP up in college it was one of those aspirational buys: i wanted to want to be a guy who could dig Mingus. I wasn't convinced it was actually going to happen but I was taking those kinds of chances... it really rewired me, as it turned out. a top 3 formative jazz experience for me
