Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

I know Bill Holman's name because I took a couple of semesters at NTSU which has (had?) a very active jazz focused music program. Stan Kenton and his band were held up by the program director, Leon Breeden, as the epitome of what a jazz band is. Random factoid, skimming through Bill Holman Wikipedia page I read that he was an alumni of Westlake College of Music where Gary Peacock when a few non-consecutive semesters before it went bankrupt (according to Peacocks Wikipedia page).

Yeah, Kenton's band did a smart thing: they made their charts available to colleges and they conducted clinics. So that was an impressionable audience whose taste was formed by Kenton. For better and for worse!

LG: Strayhorn chart coming up
Avatar 🕰 7:21pm
Listener Gregory:

↳ WR @7:18
I believe that program is still active (this is North Texas State, right?). Downbeat had an article on it a couple of years ago at some anniversary of theirs. There's a lot more competition in jazz programs now, including in more urban areas that might attract students more than moving to north Texas.

Buddy's parents were vaudeville performers, and his career started as almost a toddler who could play the drums (Baby Traps, the drum wonder!). So, he was no stranger to working to entertain. I am not a huge Buddy fan, but I found Mel Tormé's biography of him quite interesting.
