A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

they are lovely, graceful birds with the worst call ever for sure. We live on a little cove and there's a small point that juts out where the herons and egrets rotate through, I guess because the fishing is good. Kinda cool because in the spring and summer, I'd say something is hanging out there about 25% of the time.

Hey folks. Sitting on a park bench under a canopy of trees as the deep grey sky begins to release its bloated contents. Is that distant thunder, or the construction on the waterfront where machines are bulking up the shoreline?

Reading β€œWe Are Cuba,” by Helen Jaffe. An amazing, stirring account of how they not only, time after time, endured brutal American sanctions (which are really amount to an act of war) but thrived. Dynamic collective spirit and engagement at every level. Highly recommended to push back against the horrendous propaganda here.

Listened a lot to the WKCR Sun Ra birthday broadcast yesterday. Didn’t realize how diverse he was. Great stuff!

Just got really dark here, and the rain is staring to come down…headed inside. Massive lightning now!

i've related this story in the past ...but as kids while waiting for schoolbus, some of the older kids like 10yrs old had a praying mantis and captured crickets and fed the mantis the crickets. we watched the mantis pull apart the cricket gracefully limb by limb, but the whole spectacle wasn't sadistic, we were learning some sort of lesson

Nice, comrade! Those dreams fill my days…

Was wondering just this morning about the β€œschool week,” which is really an extension of the work week. Was late getting the kids to school when they told me that now, anyone arriving before 8:20 would not be marked late (which is 5 or 10 minutes later than previously).

This led to a larger conversation, the kind I love to have with the little ones. I reminded them that when the public, or in this case school parents, no longer can abide by what is felt to be an unnecessary or unjust rule or law it’s actions like these (i. e. simply arriving later, more and more people, consistently) that actually lead to the changes we desire. It’s another tactic, like non-compliance, strikes, work stoppages or slowdowns, refusal to pay, etc. Have spoken to my partner about taking the kids out of school every few weeks or a month simply for mental health days; out of the classroom and into the woods, or to the art gallery, to hear some music, or simply to stay at home to hone their individual and collective imaginations and creativity.

The same can be done about the 5 day work week.

We’ve allowed our lives to be so ground down by the ever churning and merciless grinder of capitalism. That we can’t even process the millions of ways in which we’ve become serfs in a feudal system, of course with all the apps, gadgets, entertainment and fear mongering corporate media to keep us distracted from what we all feel and know on a deeper level.

That’s exactly the point!
And those histories, of which sadly not enough of us know, are the stories of courageous and committed people uniting in collective solidarity to improve their conditions. The huge problem is that individualism has been equated with Americanism and we’ve been brainwave out of thinking in the ways that would have so naturally came to our grandparents and great grandparents, who were probably more likely to discuss openly the issues of the day at the dinner table and with their neighbors.

But yeah, these stories are either not a significant part of the school curriculum or not told in a way that really reflects the true heroism of those who made things like the 40 hour work week possible.

It’s waaaay past time for some broad and fundamental change in this country and the world. As always it’ll be us, we the people, the 99%, that will make it happen or not.

The time is so ripe for serious pushback. Today it’s those brave students at the universities, I think, have really opened the door to start connecting it all: the school β€œportfolios” and investments in war, the obscene tuition while management makes bank, our reliance on unsustainable food and power systems, imperialism, etc etc.

As Freddie Doug said about power, it concedes nothing without a fight.

Get yer gloves on folks; we’ll need every last one of ya!

I feel like we may be closer than in a long time toward a majority of people finally realizing that great Ursula Le Guin quote about capitalism (which incidentally is on a magnet on our refrigerator, a gift from PM Press!)

That the whole impenetrable behemoth, the deity we’ve been conditioned to think of about the free market, progress, capitalism is crumbling to reveal a ramshackle clearinghouse for the wealthy to pickpocket us in thousands of ways, leaving us in dangerous precarity and isolated from one another.

Sort of like lifting the curtain to reveal the all-powerful/knowing Wizard of Oz is just another shmuck keeping us enthralled to a bogus system.

There was a dude across the way that had a pair of osprey that kept trying to build a nest on top of his boat cover. He'd go out every couple days and clear it off and they would come back and start all over again. He finally put in one of those nesting platforms about 20 feet from his pier and the osprey totally cleared out from his shoreline and pier for the rest of the season and the next year as well. He got rid of the boat over the winter and now the osprey are using the platform. weird.

All the same, the kids should have something of its essence to carry forth with them into their adulthood (hopefully).

Last week me and my friend were having beers outside and listening to "Outer Spaceways Incorporated", during that 3 minute window a group of strangers passing by approached us because they heard the song. One of them started reciting Sun Ra lyrics, translated. Nice, odd bunch of people. They invited us to their last gig of the season, which was just amazing. The band was Astro Can Caravan, a group deeply inspired by the Arkestra in their way of living and playing and being part of greater forces.

Great thanks! Doubt the local library will have, but who knows, maybe?

Afrofuturism is a term I’ve only fairly recently become familiar with. First heard it from a writer I really dig Greg Tate, who sadly passed during the pandemic.

Incidentally was recently in a really cool black-owned bookstore in Philly and picked up a book named β€œEverything Man: The form and function of Paul Robeson.” Sort of ties together his incredible life with an Afrofuturist interpretation.
