"Director Robert Altman had two stipulations about the song for composer Johnny Mandel: it had to be called "Suicide Is Painless" and it had to be the "stupidest song ever written". Altman attempted to write the lyric himself, but, upon finding it too difficult for his "45-year-old brain" to write something "stupid" enough, he gave the task to his 15-year-old-son Michael, who reportedly wrote the lyrics in five minutes." - WP

A French Mac? Yesterday I was walking across the grass at the park. A Mexican family was setting up for a picnic under a tree. They had a boom box playing Dreams by Fleetwood Mac on pretty loud. Just realized why this subject struck a chord. From a book I wrote and actually talked about on this very show: "Blues Image never receives credit for its role in ushering in, albeit unconsciously, the great era of what might be called “captain-philia.” As the ’60s slipped uneasily into the new decade, you couldn’t turn the radio dial without running smack into a captain. There was Grand Funk’s “I’m Your Captain,” Neil Diamond’s “Captain Sunshine,” the Doobie Bros’ The Captain and Me, Billy Joel’s “Captain Jack,” and Elton John’s Captain Fantastic, not to mention the Captain and Tennille. (And Captain Beyond, a great stealth supergroup, formed in 1971). Perhaps this profusion of captains, along with what would now be termed the re-trending of Jesus Christ, indicates that young people were looking for a steady, manly force to guide them.

"In recent years an explanation for the origin of the V-sign dating it from the Battle of Agincourt has appeared. This story maintains that British archers were so effective and so feared by their enemy that when the French captured an archer they chopped off the two fingers he needed to draw a bow-string. Bowmen who had not been thus disfigured took to holding up two fingers to taunt their cowardly foes. Needless to say, there is no shred of evidence to support this unlikely origin, but it is on its way to becoming entrenched in the popular mind and becoming folklore in itself."

Well two fingers of course was 'V for Victory' before the Peace Sign - as per Churchill. Have even read that Aleister Crowley suggested it to the RAF & such as a symbolic counter to the swastika - as in that sort of Western Ceremonial Magick tradition - it is analogous to holding arms above you in a V, representing Resurrection - which follows a position analogous to the Cross or Swastika (a Cross in Motion) - & thus would supersede it... So I reckon the transition to it meaning 'Peace' as counter to Fascism could well follow...

Hadn't heard the archer's story. It always was a sign in motion unlike the middle finger. You wave your hand up and down as you express it.
