Ehh, if your levels are consistent through the show it's really no problem to adjust volume once for three or four hours of listening.

What's really the worst is when people crank their levels up into clipping and the whole show's distorted!

I think the Rolling Stones "liberated" the word "bitch" in 1971 with a song by that name. I THINK.

I think it was played on the radio. A computer query seems to confirm that: en.wikipedia.org...

During the early '70s, "Bitch" appeared on Billboard international charts and US college stations. In '74, Elton John's "The Bitch is Back" appeared on a Broadcasting chart of "top songs in air-play popularity in US radio."
Avatar 🦇 6:42pm
Julie:

so why did some stations refuse to play it?
  6:42pm
Dean:

Seems that the appearance of "Bitch" in jukeboxes (it was the flipside to "Brown Sugar") put pressure on radio stations to start playing it.

Dean:

Assuming they did refuse to play it, I'd guess demographics was an important factor. College radio stations were cool with it. Non-US markets were cool with it. Mainstream Americans are hypocritical prudes.

That, and the fact that it was a b-side.

In fact, in a 1977 interview with Buzz Bennett, he asks rhetorically, "Well, why does Elton John release 'The Bitch Is Back' and it gets played on every station in the country?" This is in response to a question about Johnny Guitar Watson's "Ain't That a Bitch?"

Well the BBC did ban many songs, often incongruously. Sometimes they'd not ban stuff because the bosses didn't realise the slang sexual references...
