Drunken Creep:

Great interview DJ.

Per the cats watching birds and whether its real to them or like a video game... it depends on the cat. Let's just face the facts, like people, some cats are very smart, and others are dumb as a peanut on Neptune. Some cats are dumb enough to believe the hype, others just think it's fun.

My old boy who left a while ago had a favorite music video, Winter In July by Bomb The Bass. Not a great song or video, but the cat loved it so much we used to put it on repeat. That was a cat who loved music, except live drums.

My wife Liz is involved a lot of animal rescue and TNR work, and as part of that we'll often have cats passing through our house temporarily for a couple of weeks, before they're placed with a foster or adopted outright. A few times, Liz visited the house of the foster or adopter months later. Each time the cat immediately ran right over to her, as opposed to others in the room. Agreed, they totally remember you.

Hola Ken, I had a good boy adopt me and he brought so many mice, it turned into Mouse Everest over here. He was a smart and thoughtful cat and total badass when it came to hunting and fighting (although gentle as a lamb with his humans). He was definitely trying to provide for his family. "Thanks for feeding me, now here's a nice snack for you. You're welcome and I love you too."

That guy would bring rats the size of pint glasses. And he'd peel them like bananas to "male it easier for me to dig in".

Always just pretended to be grateful, and then when the cat's back was turned, throw it on the medieval pile of rodent corpses.

When I would hold that cat outdoors (he refused to be fully indoor even at nearly age 20), I could see the fear and wonderment in the eyes of squirrels as if they were thinking "that human is cradling the great orange soul devourer. The jaws of the infinite belly, the blood soaked claws of the orange demon... now somehow like a baby in the arms of that human... life is spectacularly strange...."

That cat was a murder maniac, yet also the nicest good caring polite gentleman.

Indeed, yet like us, theyre all different. I once lived with 3 different cats, and some mice had babies in the basement. Two of that cats were on police vermin patrol, and the third was mothering and protecting the mice.

omg that is great, Drunken Creep -- MIGHTY HUNTER!!!

my first cat loved doing similar with Mockingbirds, when i was little and growing up -- they would always dive-bomb Fuzzy! i saw this often, no wonder he went after them -- but Mockingbirds were my Mom's favorite bird, she was not pleased at all!

hi Handy! WOW that is amazing -- Bluejays can be even more aggressive towards the cats than Mockingbirds, more taunting -- and my impression is that they were the most difficult to catch -- no wonder he was so proud of his work! 😹😹

It's hilarious (perhaps darkly hilarious), the interplay between species.

Another cat once came prowling around to make a home in the area. My boy lured it up to the rooftop and threw it off. Yet he was the nicest cat to people.

Made me realize, we're the same way. For example if I notice there's a bluebird peering into my window, I think "Wow, a beautiful bluebird at my window! This is a good day. Life is beautiful! I'll put a bird feeder out"

Yet if there's a person peering through my window, I think "Someone's getting stabbed in the neck!"

We're not so different from the thought processes of cats. I can imagine that cat taking all those mockingbirds to your mom and being baffled as to why she didn't see how awesome it thought it was.

I have to say it breaks my heart when kitties kill birds because I love birds. Junior used to kill roaches and put them near the bed, which I thought was OK (except for suddenly knowing how many roaches we had).

Read in the paper yesterday, (I skipped the news section), that scolding your cat is useless, but that they will hold a grudge for years. I trained my cat Jorma to travel inside my winter coat on the train rides back home from college. She was Siamese and whip-smart.

Outdoor kitties are a menace to nature, not to mention far more susceptible to disease and other predators than indoor kitties. Keep 'em indoors, or outdoors only when supervised.

Back on the ol' farm, we had a wooden grainery for oats. I'd occasionally open the hatch on the roof and set one of our various cats in there. Some would smell the mice and go hunting and some would only want to jump back outside.

Similarly, when we'd have a truck full of grain right off the combine and plenty of grasshoppers & bugs crawling around, I'd place a chicken up there. Some chickens settled down to feast and some would want to fly back down to earth.

and yeah, my Mom would always lose it! never wanted to hear about how they were attacking him, and how he was trying to impress her, etc.
