I didn't just want to take the lazy route this week, so all three of these shows are re-mastered, with improved sound, and cleaned-up audio. In the case of all three, I wasn't yet re-mastering every episode, as I do now. So hopefully all three of these sound better than they did, the first time around.

When we ran "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen," I wasn't yet restoring old broadcasts. And this show has particularly murky recordings, many of which sound terrible. So I did as much as I could to make this one sound better. However, the original sound on this episode is so bad, that even with improvement, the consonants in all the dialog sounds a little "sanded off." It should still make sense, and you should be able to make it all out. But in restoring this one, it reveals how much sound has been lost over the years.

That picture tells me this is a period drama. Do they say when it is set?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Austin Rich:

For those who don't quite recall "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen," The Captain & The First Mate are sort of portrayed as a couple in subtle ways, and they often have trouble with a woman, and then they both re-affirm their love of "The Scarlet Queen" afterwards.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Austin Rich:

↳ David Shortell @9:37
It's a contemporary show, actually! Set in 1947 / 1948. But the captain prefers the open sea on a small boat, and does shipping / trading for a living.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Austin Rich:

The crew of the Scarlet Queen is about 8, but it isn't clear if that is 8 INCLUDING the captain and the first mate, or if that is 8 plus them. (In the show, they don't name enough characters for us to know.) But the boat isn't large, and has a small crew, if that gives you a sense of the size of the boat.
Avatar 👻 9:42pm

I realized it was contemporary as soon as I heard the captain speak!

The story goes that a soldier in the Pacific Theater of WWII used his experiences traveling around during the war to inform the locations and story he wrote for the show. It is, unfortunately, somewhat racist in a number of ways, since it is a white guy writing from a very Western POV.

Kang seems to be a common Asian surname, yet American s-f writers have applied it to their villains.
There’s Kang the Klingon, Kang the Avengers’ archenemy, and Kang the octopoid alien in the Simpsons’ non-canonical Halloween episodes.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Austin Rich:

Every episode of "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen" ends with the captain and the first mate having a drink, as they talk about sailing to their next destination. This show - in a rare turn for 1947 - had an on-going storyline, that lasted for most of the run. The last several episodes don't have the on-going story, and sort of loose steam, as a result.

Dimension X is one of the first "shows" that was saved by a "write-in" campaign, where NBC actually continued to air it, only because of the mail they got. This proved to Sci-Fi fans that letter-campaigns worked, and would become a staple of how they would try to make more room for sci-fi in radio and TV.
