The Divine Comedy  Christmas With The Hannons   Favoriting Liberation RE  Divine Comedy Records  2000  Liberation is the second album by Northern Irish chamber pop band the Divine Comedy, released on 16 August 1993 by Setanta Records. Following the unsuccessful Fanfare for the Comic Muse, the group started improvising on their new album which was recorded in Fundamental, London in March 1993. Although it was the band's second album, the band's leader, Neil Hannon, often refers to it as the first, due to the stylistic differences from their debut album, Fanfare for the Comic Muse.    0:00:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Siouxsie & The Banshees  Ornaments of Gold   Favoriting Peepshow  Polydor  1988  Definitely a more sensuous take on the holidays...but a good descriptor of the hedonism potential of this particular time of year. Peepshow is the ninth studio album by English rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Upon release, the album was critically acclaimed: praise centred around the unpredictability of the orchestrations and new nuances in Siouxsie's voice. "Peepshow brims with nonlinear logic, compulsive rhythms, and icy, crystalline textures."    0:04:54 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Black Marble  All I Want For Christmas Is You   Favoriting All I Want For Christmas Is You Single  Dreamcorp  2020  Black Marble formed in 2012 as an artistic extension of Chris Stewarts collection of songs and ideas. The name Black Marble took some time to arrive upon and is more than fitting. As a literal description of a material used to sculpt and build, its the fleeting notion of a one-time symbol of taste and affluence, frozen in a moment, slightly dusty and showing every smudge and mark. In a true Christmas miracle, they have transformed the most annoying holiday song into a melancholy work of art that you want to play over and over and over.....fucking genius.    0:08:46 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Marsheaux  We Met Bernard Sumner at a Christmas Party   Favoriting Ghosts of Christmas Past Comp  Les Discs de Crepuscule  2016  An expanded double disc edition of the celebrated Christmas album from Les Disques du Crépuscule, first issued in December 1981 as TWI 058. Sometimes witty, sometimes melancholic, Ghosts of Christmas Past features exclusive festive tracks by Crépuscule and Factory luminaries such as Tuxedomoon, Durutti Column, Paul Haig, Antena, Mikado, Thick Pigeon, Pale Fountains and The Names, along with special guests including Michael Nyman, Aztec Camera, Deux Filles, Gavin Briars, Virna Lindt and New Order (as B Music). Marscheaux provides one of the newer additions to the re-release...with a fantastic little ditty that name drops many a New Order song....    0:12:44 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Ladytron  All Over By Xmas   Favoriting All Over By Xmas Single  Cooking Vinyl Ltd.  2023  "With December’s arrival comes a wealth of Christmas tunes to help us feel something, anything, this holiday season. But we’re not sure we had a certified electro-pop bop from Ladytron on our jingle-bell bingo cards. The track is pure Ladytron, swirling through familiar synth sparkles and tumbling in and out of the quartet’s hypnotic use of sonic depth to build a seductive portal of sound and sorcery. There should be plenty of holiday tunes hitting our playlists between now and Santa’s arrival, but Ladytron may have captured the season’s most magical effort" - Vanyaland    0:17:02 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Since the release of her full studio album, Tempest (2018), which charted top 40 on the iTunes Alternative charts, Bryn broke her silence in 2020 with the release of “Dead Types”, a dark-pop collaboration with Toronto producer, Don Mills, which garnered over half a million streams. s a writer and artist, Bryn strives to create safe spaces for her co-creators. Haha Sound earned critical acclaim and became Broadcast's first charting album in the United States, where it reached the top 10 of the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Recording sessions for the album took place in fragments at various locations: Keenan recorded vocal tracks with her head in a cardboard box which gave it a "closeness and deadness that makes it sit in the mix a bit nicer," while drummer Bullock recorded drum tracks in a neighborhood church before overdubbing guitar tracks and additional arrangements.    0:27:49 (MP3 | Pop-up)

2022

Wham! already had two number one singles on the UK singles chart during 1984, and news that they were planning a Christmas single meant that a battle for the coveted Christmas number one spot in Britain seemed set to be between Wham! and the year's other big act, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, who had achieved a third No. 1 in early December with "The Power of Love". The Band Aid single written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, produced the No. 1 single "Do They Know It's Christmas?", while Wham!'s offering peaked at No. 2 for much of the period. Wham! donated all "Last Christmas" / "Everything She Wants" royalties, the former of which exceeded £250,000 (equivalent to £1,010,000 in 2023), to the Ethiopian famine relief fund.

The Walkmen  Dónde Está la Playa   Favoriting You & Me  Gigantic Music / Fierce Panda  2008  Dónde Está la Playa translates to "Where is the beach"?... The answer to that question is... ...Here! This song mentions marriage, rings, Christmas cards & Christmas, so many things that are apt to us all. Mind you, it's not all wine & roses for this one... From a more recent Uncut article: "Of all the bands that burst from New York in the early ’00s, The Walkmen were the least defined by locale. The city’s nervy post-punk heritage fed directly into the kind of music popularised by The Strokes, Interpol and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, just as its dynamic club culture motored LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture. The Walkmen, by contrast, seemed aligned to another place and time. //// This may be partly due to pure geography. All five members – Hamilton Leithauser, Paul Maroon, Walter Martin, Matt Barrick and Peter Bauer – had initially met at school and played in bands around Washington DC, 200-odd miles away. More pertinently though, there was a shared predilection for vintage gear and studio dynamics patented during the first flush of rock’n’roll. Once in New York, having formed from the remnants of Jonathan Fire*Eater and The Recoys, The Walkmen offered a riveting (if sometimes wayward) mix of ’60s minimalism and voluminous art rock, at its most potent on 2004’s killer single “The Rat”. //// By 2006, however, after deciding to cut an ad hoc version of Harry Nilsson and John Lennon’s 1974 album Pussy Cats, the band appeared to have lost their way. Their label subsequently dropped them. Against a perilous backdrop – no record company, studio or manager – The Walkmen started work on what became You & Me. //// Adversity had a profound effect. Written over two years, with band members split between New York and Philadelphia, The Walkmen tapped into the spirit of their favourite records from the late ’50s and early ’60s for inspiration: Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly. The new songs left space between the grooves, allowing for echoey ambience and a moody sense of abstraction. There was fresh adventurism too, with guitarist Paul Maroon adding judicious brass and strings. //// You & Me feels like a grand statement. The Walkmen prove themselves still capable of a fierce racket, but Leithauser comes into his own as an anguished balladeer, heightened by Maroon’s cavernous guitar and drummer Matt Barrick’s extraordinary percussion. Indeed, Barrick is the album’s secret weapon, creating syncopated rhythms and textures that steer these songs towards something more expressionist in tone. //// “Dónde Está La Playa” emerges from a murky start into a series of clattery peaks and ominous lulls, Leithauser’s flailing confessional mapping out an emotional world of booze, partying and doomed romance: “I know that you’re married, rings on your hand/So I didn’t stay ’til the end”... ...The Walkmen have You & Me to thank for ushering in the superior second phase of their career. They may no longer be around, but this album proves they still matter."    0:40:42 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Sufjan Stevens  Get Behind Me, Santa!   Favoriting Songs For Christmas  Asthmattic Kitty  2006  Over 100 Christmas songs + two boxsets of them from Sufjan Stevens... This is the first..."On November 21, 2006, a five CD box set Songs for Christmas was released, which contains originals and Christmas standards recorded every year since 2001 (except 2004). Stevens undertook in the project initially as an exercise to make himself 'appreciate' Christmas more. The songs were the work of an annual collaboration between Stevens and different collaborators, including minister Vito Aiuto; the songs themselves were distributed to friends and family." //// Last question in an interview from Vulture: Q: "Is Christmas even your favorite holiday, or did we get the wrong idea from the box sets? / A: "Is it my favorite holiday? No. I’m not so secretly a Fourth of July person because my birthday is July 1, and I am a pyromaniac. I love fireworks. Every year, I drive to Pennsylvania and drop like $2,000 on illegal fireworks, cross them into New York State, and we do a big show."    0:44:31 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Chicago Now  Workshop-Reindeer Park   Favoriting Hex-mas Enduction Hour  Self-Released (Bandcamp)  2021  Project of Neal Markowski, who is "a composer/musician in Chicago. He's performed/realized pieces of 20th/21st century electronic music through the US, in addition to playing in a dozen-or-so bands over the years." ------ Fans of The Fall & especially those who know every intricacy of Hex Enduction Hour will likely be delighted (as am I) by this Christmas-themed parody of that classic 1982 Fall LP. The original Hex is often hailed as the Fall's best album. No-one denies it is a Fall masterpiece. This Christmas cover album is surprisingly sharp & savvy, making excellent selections for its Xmas-themed replacement lyrics & musical interpretations. What could easily be weak, unnecessary & campy is instead clever, worthwhile & compelling. As a Fall fan, I am happy to say that I'm most pleased visiting & revisiting this album when the season is at hand. The Fall  Hark the Herald Angels Sing   Favoriting The Complete Peel Sessions 1978 - 2004  Castle / Sanctuary Records  1994 / 2005  "The eighteenth session from December 1994 found the group in full, festive mood; and marked the return of two old Fall stalwarts; Karl Burns (last heard on session 9 in 1985) and, remarkably, Brix E Smith (last heard in session 12 in 1988). However, it was to be Craig Scanlon's last [Peel session] appearance with the group." //// Far-out reminisces: "Lord knows what Christmas around the Smith household looked like, but his explanation of a manic family get-together sounds like something he would have loved. Thusly, he seized upon this with his wild cover of ‘Hark the Harald Angels Sing’, cutting the traditional facsimile in favour of the true spirit of festivities. //// This scratchy live rendition takes the drunk in a midnight choir to new realities. In fact, it even has a bit of the Christmas card nuclear family sentiment to it too. The Fall were a band deeply entwined with John Peel, so much so that when the iconic DJ passed away Mark E. Smith appeared on BBC News and declared, “We were never friends, but he was always objective, people forget that.” That might not sound like praise but it’s almost a Christmas cuddle from Smith. //// Taken from a session in 1994, Smith snarls his way through the classic folk song like a man who has just been informed that his train is cancelled at the same moment he stubbed his toe. With jangly pop guitars and a few manic moments, this is the lock-in Christmas carol, when the wheels have fallen off festivities and you’ve entered a coma induced by Roses and Rum. //// Smith was a unique man, and for all his faults, he always gifted the public with the things they never knew they needed whether that is the strangest recital of football scores in history or the angriest Carol ever recorded."    0:57:42 (MP3 | Pop-up)

David Byrne  Fat Man's Comin'   Favoriting Fat Man's Comin' - single  David Byrne  2023  Thank you David Byrne for this utterly unsettling...yet somehow infectious little Christmas tune. A decade ago David Byrne and St. Vincent released their collaborative album Love This Giant. The sessions for the album yielded the foundation of an original Byrne song about Santa Claus called “The Fat Man’s Comin’,” which Byrne completed with composer and arranger Jherek Bischoff in 2013. In a statement accompanying “The Fat Man’s Comin’,” Byrne says he has been waiting to release the song as a benefit for some cause. He’s decided to use it as a fundraiser for his own nonprofit online news magazine Reasons To Be Cheerful. Now this was last year, but I am pretty sure that this continues...so head on over to Bandcamp to purchase!    1:13:07 (MP3 | Pop-up)

The Superions signed with New York-based record label Fanatic Records distributed by EMI/Caroline Distribution for the release of Destination... Christmas!. James White  Christmas With Satan   Favoriting A Christmas Record  ZE Records  1982  ZE founder Michael Estaban says..."Christmas albums are a tradition as old as Rock & Roll itself but I have always thought that principles of Christmas: family, the tree, gifts, peace in the world, etc. were slightly contradictory to a certain vision of Rock & Roll. I found it hard to imagine John Cale and Lou Reed sitting around a Christmas tree exchanging gifts with Nico and tucking into a turkey dinner, the same goes for the members of The Stooges or MC5... Only the painter Guy Peellaert could have imagined such a scene. And yet my teenage heroes all took part in the Christmas song tradition: Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, Elvis. Berry Gordy got the whole Tamla Motown group at it, even James Brown, who wins the prize for the kitschiest sleeve, got in on the action. All of them made an album of Christmas songs, some better than others! In 1981 and 1982 ZE Records published its own Christmas album under the supervision of Michael Zilkha. All the American artists on ZE answered the call and came up with a Christmas track...." This record was reissued again in 1982 with more tracks, and this James White/Chance recording is featured there...The James White track has been described as a "droll, blasphemous, nearly tuneless piece of skronk".According to another source: "The lyrics tell the story of a man with the Christmas blues who commits suicide and then meets up with Satan 'to join the celebration.' In the background, Chance incorporates bits and pieces of music from famous Christmas carols. One of the lyrics describes the party with Satan: 'There’s no angels or wise men, and certainly no virgins.'"    1:19:24 (MP3 | Pop-up)

So... I was a little off-base on that one... Still, he's probably obscure on the scale of prolific award-winning Canadian artists... This unique series of albums sees Moka Only deliver a fresh batch of tracks each year, blending his signature blend of witty lyricism, smooth flows, and infectious beats with holiday themes. Nap Eyes  Ice Grass Underpass   Favoriting The Neon Gate  Paper Bag Records  2024  Released Oct 18, 2024. Nap Eyes are from Halifax, Nova Scotia. "After three years of silence, the Canadian band Nap Eyes have returned with their own meditations on the monstrous and familiar (or the monstrously familiar). The Neon Gate, their metamorphic fifth long-player, collects a cache of nine fascinating reveries recorded over the four years since their last album, Snapshot of a Beginner (five of which were released episodically throughout the spring and summer of 2024). “I See Phantoms of Hatred and of the Heart's Fullness and of the Coming Emptiness,” the album’s colossal penultimate track, is, along with “Demons,” their languorous adaptation of a phantasmagorical poem by Russian Romantic Alexander Pushkin (1799–1837), one of two ambitious but adept adaptations in which singer and principal songwriter Nigel Chapman unravels knotty, century-old verse into a fluid, memorable melodies across the loom of the band’s pulsing instrumental syncretism. //// This fresh engagement with narrative and lyric formality complements the seven original songs on the record, which reveal classic Naps touchstones (the uneasy interplay of physics and philosophy, the nexus of fantasy and science fiction, perambulatory descriptions of landscape and weather, self-interrogating soliloquies, apertures of surreality, technological anxiety, video games), but also evidence of divergent impulses toward nonlinear abstraction and longform improvisational composition (resulting in their most discursive, deconstructed, and deliquescent songs to date). With The Neon Gate Nap Eyes have transmuted, as has their understanding of what a song is, what it can do, where it might go. //// "When they exist at all verse-chorus-verse structures often disintegrate in favor of an unhurried unfolding, an emphasis on marking, attenuating, and collapsing time over standard musical notions of progression or refrain, a foregrounding of ellipsis over resolution. Only the careening “Ice Grass Underpass,” written in 2009, predating the band’s existence but prefiguring the sonic signature of their foundational first two albums, closely resembles, with Labelle’s snowy guitar squall (also evident in his lacerating, atonal leads scribbling through “Tangent Dissolve”), their older material." https://napeyes.bandcamp.com/  *   1:45:24 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Jesus And Mary Chain  Jesus Fuck   Favoriting Psychocandy (Expanded Edition)  Edsel Records / Rhino Records / Warner  1985 / 2011  Merry Xmas! ... "After quitting their jobs in 1980, brothers Jim and William Reid formed The Jesus and Mary Chain with bass player Douglas Hart. Taking inspiration from German industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten, girl group the Shangri-Las and The Velvet Underground & Nico, they bought a Portastudio in 1983 when their father lost his job in a local factory and gave the brothers £300 from his redundancy money. The band recorded a demo tape containing the songs "Upside Down" and "Never Understand" which was heard by Glaswegian musician Bobby Gillespie, who in turn passed it on to his friend Alan McGee of Creation Records. McGee was impressed with the tape and invited the band to play at a Creation Records showcase event in London, becoming the band's manager shortly afterwards. //// Following more London concerts, the Jesus and Mary Chain entered Alaska Studios in Waterloo, South London and recorded their debut single, "Upside Down". Released by Creation Records in November 1984 and featuring a B-side produced by Slaughter Joe, "Upside Down" sold out its initial pressing and ended the year by being placed at number 37 in John Peel's Festive Fifty. After recruiting Gillespie as their drummer in late 1984, the Jesus and Mary Chain signed to the WEA subsidiary label Blanco y Negro, which had been established by Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis. The band entered Island Studios to record with engineer Stephen Street but the sessions proved to be fruitless and the band returned to Alaska Studios for the recording of their second single, "Never Understand". The single was released by Blanco y Negro in February 1985, and in March that year they began recording their debut album with engineer John Loder at Southern Studios in Wood Green, North London. Psychocandy was recorded in six weeks and totalled £17,000 in recording and production costs."    1:48:50 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Out From Under (Emperor Machine Extended Rework)   Favoriting

Christmasville UK EP

Mute

2024

Released December 11, 2024. "The EP is heralded... ...with ACR’s first ever Christmas track, ‘Now and Laughter’, which embodies all of the hope and goodwill of the season. //// With yuletide spirit, we have invited some of the extended ACR family to join the celebrations and rework tracks from our 2024 album, It All Comes Down to This. Jane Weaver (labelmate when we were both on much-missed Rob Gretton’s label back in the ‘90s) has remixed ‘Where You Coming From’, and long-time friend and collaborator Emperor Machine (aka Andy Meecham) has given ‘Out From Under’ an extended rework... //// “I love the original Lp version of ‘Out From Under’ but I thought a Boogie / Funk Re-Work would make a great alternative. It was Martin’s funk guitar riff that initially inspired me to take the mix in that direction.” Andy Meecham //// ...Some newer friends have been invited into the fold, too. London-based Jezebell, who the band heard when they were on tour in Germany, bring the Electo Balearic party spirit to ‘We All Need’ to complete the EP. //// This new EP is yet another unexpected turn in our expansive catalogue – “ACR does Christmas! Who’d have thunk it?”, “We are big Slade fans though…” https://acertainratio.bandcamp.com/

Released also as a 7" independent of that year's "Cure For Pain" album release, their second. The band themselves coined the label "low rock" to describe their music, which involved "a minimalist, low-end sound that could have easily become a gimmick: a 'power trio' not built around the sound of an electric guitar. Nobody sounds quite like Morphine and we like it that way.    1:58:29 (MP3 | Pop-up)

↳ Song: "Christmas With Satan" by "James White"
One of my faves from "A Christmas Record," the album that of course gave us the inescapable (tho wonderful) Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping."

The weirder I get, the more respect I get. Possibly fear. Either way.

A sexy young Woman did come in wearing black leather hot pants, waistcoat, CFM boots & fishnets. She insisted on straddling my thigh & leaning forward to pump her cleavage for her fuck me dirty Santa pic.

One of the best holiday tunes. I’m very partial to Cristina’s “things fall apart” on this comp. Derek showed me that song and my life was forever changed!

Derek Westerholm:

↳ Avspuk @9:10
Avspuk... right? I know it's not supposed to completely work... But it doesn't work in the wrong kind of "not working on purpose" way... It's just... Off. Still notable, though, in some sort of weird way.
