I think there's a whole sub-plot in "Edward Scissorhands" about a neighbor who is always playing religious music on an organ, and who is worried about the depravity of those around her.

Arvo Zylo:

I was recently listening to Al Melgard, original organist for the Chicago Stadium/Chicago Blackhawks. The venue has since been demolished and there is now a different organist, of course, but I used to work at the newer arena, and the organist, Frank Pellico, used to play Al Melgard's "My Vision" at the very beginning of every night, before the gates even opened. So sometimes I would sit there in an almost completely empty arena, and listen to it echo out. I love organs. I used to have a pretty large collection of organ records.

It was really beautiful, honestly, but of course, it is an acquired taste. "My Vision" is easily my favorite organ song, and I can't describe how excited I was to find that song after I'd been hearing it. It is the only haunting song he would play, and it was written by Al Melgard, too.

very cool, I would love to hear it! I'll try and scour the internet.

Arvo Zylo:

And of course, I do love Ethel Smith. I used to go to the Music Box theater, and the organist would ask if anyone had requests... I remember asking him to play Tico Tico (in the style of Ethel Smith), and he couldn't do it, unsurprisingly, but he did a decent job off the top of his head. I was being mischievous.

That is Dennis Scott, who is almost 80 years old now, and is still playing the theater organ. He has been making new soundtracks to silent film reissues fairly often.

I don't mean to piggyback, but I did an interview with him here. He has a basement stylized as a speakeasy, it was marvelous.

One of my favorite short-lived bands in PDX was an instrumental trio: bass, organ and drums. The Organ wasn't huge; you could move it with a couple people, the kind you would have in a living room. I have some recordings of that band, and I wish they'd lasted longer than they did. I think they stopped playing after less than a year.
