Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Hi DJ Peter and horologists. We watched Laura (1944) last night, featuring the famous theme so many times and ways, there must've been a special. And clocks! Clocks galore. Or two important ones anyway, made by MacGuffin and Co. (Paris).

A classic but one that I'm not sure has held up? But yes, many clocks!

I felt it held up. Not contemporary, but taut. I thought the Price was the Winchell character; instead he was the dumb lug! The omnipresence of the theme made me think of (of all things) Mr. Hulot's Holday.

Motian is the Armenian pronunciation. He went with the mispronunciation because it seemed appropriate from a drummer to be "motion." But after Cindy McGurl's radio show "Uncle Paul's Jazz Closet" where she says it the traditional way, I'm now in the habit.

Wow, I never saw the originals, just the 5 LP box set (reissue), I'm jeolous!

Saw three of them in a used record store and vowed to myself that someday I would own the full set. When eBay came along it became a lot easier to find them.

I am old enough to remember when it was Motion, then Mo-ti-an, then back to Motion for a long time. And now Mot-ti-an again!

The box set is 6 LPs set, all those albums (though I'm sure the originals are better sounding. But, old Hebrew Proverb; Who is the Rich Man? The one who is satisfied with what he has...)

Yeah, it's a really tough fit trying to say it fits me, but maybe just with this box set...

This is lovely. The more I hear Mary Lou Williams, the more I want to hear Mary Lou Williams.

Farmer is definitely bringing da funk into the Great American Songbook!

I'm sure I heard it pronounced 'Motion' when I've seen him perform (a number of times). But, having a name that is constantly mangled, I can identify with going with what's easier.

Caught the first half of the show (my usual Monday Morning Quarterback catch-up). Dug the Roland Hanna (know him in groups, haven't chased down the solo stuff).
Thanks, Peter, a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!
