X's opinion should by default prevail, so goes the argument. So much music engages the public (us) in an American Bandstand mode: it's catchy, we can dance to it. It's all subjective. (I don't believe this.) But that's not the whole story with Messiaen. I want to hear competing(?) recordings to discover how this work has unfolded in the minds of conductors and orchestras who have delivered it. I consult these recordings. I also happen to enjoy and adore them. Imagine that. I'm thinking, feeling, and opinionating all at once.
