Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Good Christmas/holiday music is transcendent. After all, the very word "music" refers to gods and goddesses, to our religious proclivities. Again I'll recommend Sequentia's "Plebs Domini" on their Aquitania album.

If they waited until mid-December to start playing Xmas music in every store and showed more variety in the selections, I'd find it less irritating.

I eventually looked up the authorship of Hark the Herald Angels Sing, because this whole Mendelssohn connection seemed so unlikely. Well, here is what our crowdsourced interweb tells us: 'Mendelssohn composed a cantata to commemorate Johannes Gutenberg's invention of movable type, and it is music from this cantata, adapted by the English musician William H. Cummings to fit the lyrics of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", that is used for the carol today.'
Of course! Gutenberg! Angels! Glory be.

Temple Square, a splendid place for lovers of music. The performances are often free. I heard a resplendant *rehearsal* there by the Univ. of Utah student choir, followed later that evening by the performance. Morton Lauridsen's "Chanson de la Rose," among other works. Yet to be bettered in my experience.

Well, Dan S, it seems your disaffection is with the stores. So it is with mine. But I have yet to hear Sequentia played too early in the year over a store PA.

So, possibly the first time I've ever even contemplated the lyrics... because as a kid you just kind of learn the words like another language. Just mouthing sounds LOL. Likely we changed "all thy sons" to "all of us" because of the unneeded gender reference. So you'll probably have more of a chance to get in if you use the modern version .LOL. I personally haven't sung the anthem in about 35 years. :D

Also, it's pretty much the same story for the US national anthem. You sing it as a kid in school without paying much attention. The one thing I like about the song is that it ends with a question, which may be unique among national anthems.
