"Already in Old English, present tense forms of willan are often used with future reference, but chiefly in contexts where desire, purpose, or intention is implied, reflecting the meaning of the word in its use as a full verb."--OED
Avatar 🥁 1:29pm
Charles in Chicago:

↳ Dean @1:18
Indeed. In German the future tense is indicated by "werden" ("Morgen wird es regnen" - it will rain tomorrow) which just states that a thing will come to pass. "Willen" indicates a desire for something to happen ("Ich will ein Oper haben!" - I want an opera! (Fitzcarraldo)) - the desired thing may or may not happen. English "will" combines both of these meanings, I think
