In retrospect - Townshend was too traumatized by Moon's loss to do TheWho with commitment. Maybe a little like Macca & TheBeatles - always a tension of knowing you could do Solo on completely your own terms ...Pete always moaning he didn't stay in ArtSchool & have a 'normal' life, &tc. ...

In case like me you're underinformed :
' Bob "Slim" Dunlap (August 14, 1951 – December 18, 2024) was an American rock musician. He was a Minnesota-based guitarist and singer-songwriter who was best known as a member of The Replacements from 1987 to 1991, replacing original lead guitarist Bob Stinson. Dunlap also recorded two solo albums in the mid-1990s.
Dunlap was influenced by Hank Williams and Keith Richards, and had been called "one of the last old-school cool guitar players". Ralph Heibutzki at AllMusic said that he "epitomizes the journeyman musician who plays for the fun of it, when his day gig allows". His solo albums earned praise from Bruce Springsteen, who called them "really, deeply soulful and beautiful."
Minneapolis music writer Jim Walsh called Dunlap "the epitome of constraint. He plays what he wants when he wants, and because of that and so many other reasons, he is nothing short of a gunslinger—showing up at bars only occasionally, and when he does, shooting out the lights with a bluesman’s salt-of-the-earth style.” '...

Not related to The Replacements, but to some of the conversation here. I remember seeing Wilco at Irving Plaza around the time of Being There's release...the show was really great and rowdy. I went backstage and told Tweedy it was like a Faces show...even though I never saw The Faces! I guess I should have more accurately said, "That is how I imagine a Faces show would have been like".

Yeah my Replacements story. Saw them in probly 1984 @ Men'sInnsquare Bar in Cambridge in Boston. They placed an Ad said 'Tommy & the Placemats' - all the hipsters knew it was a warmup for a larger venue. We rushed to it ...dropped acid ...tiny place barely room between the bar & stage to be. Bob Stinson wore a dress, my pupils dilated - they did StrawberryFields in our faces...

So sad to hear about Slim. First time I saw the Replacements at the I-Beam in SF touring Let it Be. Bob was not wearing a diaper for that show but it was the best show I saw that year hands down. I saw the them again a few years later at the Fillmore this time with Slim on guitar. Also the best show I saw that year. Before the show Westerberg was in the crowd talking to people. I said "love the new record" as I walked by. He said "Glad you approve." Normally I'd think what a dick but it was Paul Westerberg, of course he's going to be snarky.

There may be someone out there who recalls a documentary called "The Minneapolis Sound". It screened on the local Minneapolis PBS station in the 1980s and included a short segment on The Replacements. I watched it in my Mpls suburb, maybe 6th grade? Immediately went out and bought All Shook Down and Tim on cassette.

One time my band played Bar Matchless in Brooklyn, and it happened to be my first gig with a Fender Twin. I'm sure somebody slipped the sound guy a $20 because he kept asking me to turn up the amp. I had it running at about 8--the technical term for 8 on a Twin is "fucking loud." The sound guy was like "oh yeah, that's where that amp needs to be." Did the whole show like that. NY Post did a review of the show that opened with "don't put your drink down at this show, the guitar is so loud it will vibrate the drink right off the table."

Responding to an earlier comment from "?" in regards to that Minneapolis Sound documentary: Yes! That's the one where 'Mats road manager Bill Sullivan balks at the term "obstreperous" as used by Warner Brothers to describe the band. "That's what they get paid to do," he sneers, "use words like 'opstreperous'".
