Better for the environment and better at mitigating re-freezing; instead of glare ice it makes a sort of grainy mud that you can walk on and not slip. At my Mom's old house, we had this one spot on the driveway near the house that was always a huge hazard after any kind of snow or ice storm and it did the trick.
