The only genuinely "bad" movies (IMO) are the plodding plotholed ones where "nothing happens". As long as something is happening, no matter how flawed, there is potential enjoyment.

For sure - as my film professor said, Ed Wood can't be the "worst director". The point of a director is "to tell the story". Ed Wood was passionate, full of stories to tell and tried to tell them - no matter how few resources he had to tell them...And he said to compare Ed Wood with many (sometimes big budget) directors, who have no story to tell, and couldn't tell it if they wanted to.

Ah, that's what the 'Festival' was. A centennial like reprise of the 1851 Great Exhibition, focusing on postwar Britain's technology and design. Widely seen as a Labour attempt to shore up and market their achievements, they nonetheless lost re-election. But that seems to have had a long term effect on British technology and fashion. The cinematic 'Mod' Britain of the '60s probably owes a bit to the Festival's setting of postwar trends.

I think Smash Instruments was partly gimmickry - & also take Townshend on his word that it was Art School conceptualizing ...& just plain amphetamine release & self-expression. Lennon said it wasn't some thing Townshend came up with in Art School - it's what Musicians have always done when exasperated - as with the quality of an instrument, for example. In Townshend's case in the early 1960s - it was definitely a Social statement on Class & Economics as well. These were production line mass-produced instruments... As he noted - when they got to the USA - TheWho were London Mods waging Class War - & the Hippies were waging a Peaceful Protest against a War... I can relate to the Ravi Shankar attitude of a Classical or Spiritual Musician that the Instrument is Sacred. @ the same time as I can relate to the late 20thCentury Western Modernist act of Creative Destruction. I've done it myself. It's never bothered me that someone wants to do it with their own property - that's not the same as Vandalism to me. Tho everything can - & did - become routine & performative. Hendrix a prime example of an Artist feeling trapped by the obligations of Performance he himself utilized to promote himself earlier...

It's like Spinal Tap, being asked what they would be doing if they weren't rock stars...A similar story for most people who end up being high energy entertainers, I'm sure.

i can appreciate ALL that. what bothers me about it is the wastefulness - when that "disposable" instrument could alternately turn some poor person's life around.

A Gittar Mag asked Townshend if he ever regretted smashing a gittar. He said - only once. He picked up a Fender Strat in a pawn shop - already a prime Vintage instrument of quality @ that time. He was sure it was one of Buddy Holly's Strats ...it felt & sounded like that.
But @ the Michigan gig following - the audience - particularly one guy up front - insisted he smash it ! So ...he did. Over the guy's fingers. He's been waiting for him to come forward & sue him ever since...

Fortunately for The Who, a world grew up around them that they fit into. That we all fit into

- and let's not forget that the one and only motivation for Pete to smash his guitar the first time was to try to measure up to Jimi.

On one late night talk show - Pete smashed one for charity. He's like - you sure you want me to destroy this ? They're like ...we can get more for it if you do.

He did it the first time in 1964, albeit by accident. But that was quite a while before Jimi.

No - Jimi was unknown to the English until late 1966 when he showed up there. TheWho were already Giants in the UK. First thing Jimi did was approach Townshend for equipment advice...

Logically, I know there are plenty of reasons to compare the Beatles and the Beach Boys, but my brain just processes them differently, so its like apples and oranges to me.

The two acts were a bit close for comfort. Hendrix assimilated everything everybody else was doing whole in a very real sense (TheWho, yARdbiRdS, Cream...) - & then took it to another level... Monterey Pop was the Jimi Hendrix Experience's debut in the USA - no less - & still important for TheWho as well. So it came to a head there...

↳ Song: "Dr. Kurtz's Program" by "The Lane Steinberg Proje...
Lane Steinberg writes:
In the late 90s there used to be a store on Jamaica Avenue called “Vivian’s Treasures.” Vivian was a fast-talking Hispanic twenty-something who chain-smoked Newports and was always coked up. The “treasures” were mounds of stuff from homes of evicted tenants. All kinds of things: prescription medication, wedding albums, piles of clothes, and tons of cassettes and VHS tapes — weird home movies and Jamaican dance parties. Pre YouTube this was all exotic stuff. My buddy Jeff & I would use these for our Public Access show. Vivian would sell me these in bulk for a great price. I’d buy bags of tapes. “Dr Kurtz’s Program” came from an unlabeled cassette. That’s the entire thing, start to finish. I put this over a Grateful Dead loop. It's disruptive but meditative. There’s one part where it feels like it’s an echo but that’s on the tape.

PS this is from a video I found at Vivian’s treasures. youtu.be...
