Chuck Brown covers all those bases with "Money"
  9:06am Ken:

Also, anybody have a link to live audio from the congressional hearing this morning?
  9:08am Lizardner Dave:

The Ned Beatty "Network" speech works too, doesn't it?
  9:09am Ghengis Jung:

Maybe CSpan?

  9:18am Negator:

I really feel like a rape victim, not a sucker. Fudgepecker.
  9:18am R. P.:

How about the theme song for Gerald Ford's WIN (Whip Inflation Now) campaign? I remember this, but can't find it anywhere. Meredith (The Music Man) Wilson was the composer.
  9:22am Lizardner Dave:

Is anyone else concerned about how all this could affect WFMU? For instance folks that have had their savings screwed by all this might have to contribute less next marathon. Not good.
  9:23am jan:

A theme show that begins impressively- both audibly and visually!
  9:27am Ken From Hyde Park:

Yeah...maybe it's a good time for one of Ken's state of the station addresses to talk about finances. Let's hope no one is foreclosing on the building. Also, any news on the Manhattan transmitter project? http://www.c-span.org/Watch/C-SPAN_wm.aspx lists a vaiety of CSPAN feeds.
  9:27am Derek Smith:

Pink Floyd - Money.
Or is that too boringly predictable?

couldn't make a more astute real estate investment than the house of WFMU purchase long ago, and now that I think of it, so was buying the radio staton from Uppsala college. Ken for secretary of the treasury- he IS fiscally responsible.
  9:32am Laurie:

Hiiiiiii Ken.
  9:32am Leonard Cohen:

"Everybody Knows"
  9:32am Joel:

One warning. I watched yesterday's Senate hearing. It is depressing! Watching Henry Paulson, former head of Goodman Sachs telling Senators he needs $70B in a lump sum, now. I believe the legal term is "extortion".
  9:33am Ghengis Jung:

"the large print giveth, and the small print taketh away"
  9:35am Joel:

"Epitaph", King Crimson. "...the world is in the hand of fools"
  9:36am Lizardner Dave:

It only has tangential money references, but "Ashes of American Flags" by Wilco seems appropriate. Or is that too "Dad Rock" for Ken's show?
  9:36am R. P.:

That's $700B. But who's counting?
  9:37am mp:

"all you need is money" - yximalloo from 198six tokyo

Hey Bad Ronald, dont you have a song called "Bank?"
  9:39am Mickey Mephistopheles:

I'm waiting for the day when the CEOs applying for financial assistance for their corporations are forced to take weekly piss tests and to be systematically humiliated at the hands of welfare caseworkers. (I'm not holding my breath.)
  9:40am Joel:

Oops, But hey, it's only taxpayer money. $70B, $700B what's the difference to Paulson and his cronies? They probably don't pay much taxes anyway.
  9:42am Mickey Mephistopheles:

Anyone played "Welfare for the Rich" by Chris T's old band The Nihilistics yet? (Will need a small amount of FCC cleanup, though)
  9:42am Negator:

I remember listening to William Cooper's radio show on Voice of America in the early 90's and he opened his show with "Everybody Knows". I thought it was very creepy. He played the whole song. Did anyone else like his creepy-ass show. Some of the best radio I've ever heard.
  9:42am Bad Ronald:

That's the "rap" Bad Ronald - We are the punk band that appeared on Belock's show...
We do have a song "We Do Heroin" supplied by the government...
but it's not as relevant.
  9:43am Bad Ronald:

"Everybody Knows" - is perfect!
  9:44am Chas.:

Dang--Did Leonard write this just last week?
  9:44am Negator:

You could play that Woody Guthrie song, "Facists born to Lose"

Has anyone had problems with Prozac after stopping abruptly? Since stopping a week ago I've had nausea, dizziness, fainting spells and tremors and . My doctor said the problems will eventually stop.

  10:04am Paulson:

Dear WFMU listeners:

I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with a
transfer of funds of great magnitude.

I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America. My country has had
crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of funds of 800 billion
dollars US. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most
profitable to you.
I am working with Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my
replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you may
know him as the leader of the American banking deregulation movement in the
1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.

This is matter of great urgency. We need blank check. We need the funds
as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these funds in the names
of our close friends because we are constantly under surveillance. My family
lawyer advised me that I should look for a reliable and trustworthy person
who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transferred.

Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account
numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to
<mailto:wallstreetbailout%40treasury.gov>wallstreetbailout@treasury.gov so that we may transfer your commission for
this transaction. After I receive that information, I will respond with
detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the
funds.

Yours Faithfully,
Minister of Treasury Paulson

I wonder how many kids will have to delay or not go to college because their parents savings were vaporized.

Perhaps it's an obvious suggestion, but "Buddy Can You Spare a Dime?". It was timely in 1932, and it is timely today.
There is a great version by Paul Motian ("On Broadway, vol. 4" Winter & Winter), but also one I think by Billie Holiday.

I was 15. It was an instamatic. If I leave them up, I will also post the shots of myself on that stage. Those are ... special.

Great job with your show Ken - you always find the most appropriate music.

  11:36am Denise in Washington, DC:

The Wallflowers may be fairly lame, but they do have a highly appropriate song: "Somebody else's money."

And let's not forget Spinal Tap: "Gimme Some Money."

Hatch played 10 CC yesterday, sorta kinda, playing J Dilla's "Workin' On It", which heavily samples "Worst Band In the World". I was a big fan of that album (10cc's second) at the time of its original release. Jeez, that was a long time ago . . .

I would love to hear Ken play Cher. She's got a song called "When the Money's Gone" that would be awesome in this playlist But I would love to hear Ken play Cher in any event, just on general principle.

There is enough material here for about a weeks worth of shows...don't worry this "financial crisis" will be with us for awhile....plenty of time to get in all of the requests.

Bored, it's like cracking jokes at a funeral to relieve the tension. When WFMU falls $100k short of their goal at the next marathon because all of our bank accunts have been hosed, that's when we'll do the crying. In the meantime might as well enjoy the social chaos!

LD, I could be wrong, but WFMU marathons do well in bust years, not just boom years. IIRC. (Although maybe there are more pledges defaulted upon in the bust years?)

I hope you're right Ike. I know I'll have to cut back if I lose my job (I'm not in the financial sector, I'm in the media biz but we're already hearing ominous phrases like "cost containment initiatives" around the office) and even if I don't the ol' retirement fund has taken quite the ass-kicking. If it comes down to "support FMU and eat Alpo" or "don't support FMU and at least eat canned pork 'n' beans", well, dog food doesn't really appeal to me.
  1:24pm cynthia:

Brilliant show.
  10:31am Pamela Rice:

Sept. 24 show was particularly brilliant, Ken. But you're my all-time favorite dj anywhere, any time, anyway, so I think you're pretty brilliant already. I have an idea for an WFMU show. Check out TalkingStickTV dot org ... The NYC area could go to town with a similar program / Web site. Nu?
