rst-wiley:

The first half (or so) of "Until the End of the World" is good, too.
  1:19pm
still b/p:

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is not a great movie, but I do like how the kids in it refer to the "pocky clips."

glenn:

has anybody ever read alas babylon, by pat frank? i don't know if it was ever made into a film, but it's a great book about post nucular (thanks dubya) life.
  1:26pm
glenn:

fair enough. all my info about colorado is from south park.
  1:26pm
still b/p:

In the recent Book of Eli with Denzel, it was a disapointment that, by now, they wouldn't go beyond a simple plot that feels easy and familiar and cadges Mad Max design flavors. Did, however, give me a renewed appreciation for Al Green's version of How Can You Mend A Broken Heart.
  1:27pm
listenermark:

Lovely Sky Boat by Alice Coltrane is neato.
  1:29pm
maja:

i love your show!
  1:30pm
Mike East:

@Glenn, I think Alas Babylon was the only book I liked in High School. @still b/p - the twist at the end of Book of Eli pissed me off. Of newer post apocalyse movies, The Road was pretty excellent, I think.
  1:31pm
zoot:

Glad A Boy and His Dog was mentioned. For books, how about "Good Omens," a merry romp through the apocolypse by Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett?
  1:32pm
glenn:

i think it's fantastic, and i'm surprised it's not more widely known.
  1:35pm
glenn:

and also samuel r. delaney, but i can't remember the title off the top of my head. google, here i come.
  1:36pm
annie:

(frantically writing each of these down)
  1:36pm
Looms:

Hello all.
Fave movie about the end of the world is In the Mouth of Madness by John Carpenter. Or maybe The Thing.
Looking forward to watch A Boy And His Dog.
  1:37pm
Mike East:

After we read Alas Babylon in school, we watched "The Day After..."which may have been a made for TV movie.
  1:38pm
glenn:

delany. the book is dhalgren. it's pretty much a given that apocalypse writing is going to be science fiction, i guess, or is that too broad a statement?
  1:38pm
Marc S:

I live in Brighton, UK. I found your station yesterday and have recommended it to all my friends. Very eclectic and rare and unusual track selections. Thanks!
  1:38pm
still b/p:

Yes, the Eli "twist" was weak, like something you'd see in a sci-fi comic book or a Twilight Zone episode back around the time Chubby's Twist was current.
  1:39pm
glenn:

What about the awesome comments board, Marc? don't we deserve props too?
  1:41pm
Marc S:

Of course! Neil Gaiman is a legend in his own tea-time. :D Good selection of apocalyptic fare on show. Good work guys!
  1:41pm

Martha in EC:

In the Mouth of Madness is available for INSTANT streaming Irene :) I think I will watch while I work.
I liked The Road as an audiobook, but watched the movie for Viggo
  1:52pm
annie:

oh, thanks looms.. i was just thinking about my netflix-free existence and how much i rely upon youtube for movies..
  1:52pm
still b/p:

Children of Men was well done, but too much of it was just chasing and shooting and dodging and tight escapes that could've been in any picture.
  1:53pm
Mike East:

I saw A boy and his dog thanks to Netflix Instant
  1:54pm
annie:

i could not sit through "children of men"
  1:54pm
Dave de:

Cheers Irene!!
  1:54pm
Marc S:

Children of Men has an amazing single shot, no cuts action sequence in it though...Even John Woo must have been jealous of that one...!
  1:55pm
Mike East:

Holy Crap I forgot Children of Men! Love that movie. Clive Owen is the shit.
  1:57pm
glenn:

yep. matt dean's a douchebag.
  1:59pm
Irene:

Children of Men is a fave of mine too. So many great suggestions, folks. I'll be very busy watching this week before it all ends.
;D
  2:02pm
Marc S:

You guys forgot Planet of The Apes, Day of theTriffids (original English version!), Logan's Run and Delicatessen :D
  2:03pm
Looms:

I'm thinking of it now, just another kind of "end of the world": Dr. Strangelove by Stanley Kubrick. I love it.
  2:06pm
rst-wiley:

Good quote on imdb re: Until the End of the World.
(I haven't seen the director's cut to say, but agree w the 150 min comments)

"At a whopping 280 minutes, Wender's intended length of his sci-fi epic Until the End of the World might actually make some wish the world was ending, but for those of us willing to commit the time, the Director's cut is a rewarding experience.

The 150 minute theatrical version of the film was criticized for being overly ambitious, disjointed and underdeveloped, while the Director's cut not only fills in these blanks, it fleshes out this fascinating story about how we see the world around us, the search for identity within that world and our obsessive/destructive interface with technology as a means to process reality, both conscious and unconscious. "
  2:06pm
glenn:

i'd argue that dr. strangelove is pre apocalyptic.
  2:10pm
Martha in EC:

I went back and read Children of Men... yes, the book! It was better.
P.d.James... didn't have Clive tho'
  2:12pm
Marc S:

Not sure if they might be 'too English' for you guys, but there are 2 films which are in my opinion, stark and very realistic in the way they deal with the subject of how an apocalypse would effect ordinary people. They are 'When The Wind Blows' an aniamtion which focuses on an elderly couple, and 'Threads' which covers quite a long period of time after the 'event'. Check them out if you can find them.
  2:13pm
glenn:

martha, i only watched siesta because ellen barkin was in it, and it was still worth it.
  2:13pm
Looms:

I'd argue that A Boy Ans His Dog is post apocalyptic, Glenn.
  2:14pm
glenn:

and you would be absolutely correct.
  2:16pm
Alan Cynic:

Some stunningly beautiful music, as ever! Very pleased to finally hear Arborea, about whom I've been hearing great things.
  2:17pm
Chris from DC:

Going to see Arboria tonight with Fern Knight
  2:19pm
annie:

i absolutely LOVED "threads"
  2:21pm
Marc S:

@annie. Yes, it's pretty bleak, but very well done considering it's age now. Both films are on youtube in parts. WTWB has Bowie, Genesis and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame on the soundtrack as well. Bonus!
  2:22pm
Looms:

On YouTube too, thanks Annie!
  2:22pm
jaycjay:

Just noticed that rst-wiley mentioned 1998's 'Last Night' an hour or so ago. Something that stands out about that story is that the actual cause of the impending end of the world is never mentioned. There's no doubt that it will happen at a particular date and time, but the exact mechanism of it isn't mentioned. And really, I guess that would be kind of irrelevant.
  2:22pm
annie:

yes marc, bleak, and imho, close to what reality would offer up if in fact those things came about.
  2:24pm
dave:

threads terrified me when it was aired on bbc2 when i was about 14 or so---the actual time,so not at all dated and too close to home-about 35 miles down the road
  2:26pm
dave:

immediately after was a studio programme where members of the govt. argued that it wouldnt be as bad as that--in other words making out they woul;dnt mind a nuclear war really---really scary
  2:26pm
Marc S:

@annie. well that's the scary part isn't it. No Hollywood glamour when the bombs are falling :D
@dave yeah it's scarier when you know the places involved!
  2:27pm
dave:

sure thing marc--does look a bit datred now though
  2:28pm
Doctor B.:

Has anyone mentioned the movie "Miracle Mile"? I'd call that one a pre-apocalyptic romance!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097889/
  2:28pm
glenn:

probably why i'm afraid of mullets.
  2:29pm
Marc S:

@dave. Yeah! You have to suspend a little more disbelief than usual :) But still holds up when you stop laughing at the haircuts and fashions!
  2:29pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I've loved this Moody Blues album since I was a kid (and all the others)
  2:32pm
annie:

DCE- timeless.
  2:33pm
rst-wiley:

@jaycjay Yeah, the 'y2k' tagging from those times never stuck to this film.

This may 21 has nothing on y2k bullshit.
  2:34pm

I knew the fellow who wrote the non-fiction book upon which Threads was based. It was cheerily called, Life After Nuclear War. My friend was known as Dr. Doom.

Amazing show today, Irene. I was gonna use this theme for my monthly mixtape, but my record collection is not big enough to fill an hour of apocalyptic music. Would love to hear Bunny Wailer's Armigideon. Great comments, too, commenters. Thanks for all the movie tips. Definitely my favorite genre.

Yes, Thanks everyone for all the great contributions! Lots of great suggestions.

Damn', this is the end of the show :(
  2:53pm

Glad to have a first set to go back and listen to. Might even rerun on the apocalyptic theme. Rerunning is part of apocalyptic themes, too.
  2:54pm
Ari M.:

It's the end of the show as we know it....and I feel fiiiine.
  2:56pm

the film the road excellent post apocalyptic
  2:58pm
Alan Cynic:

I want to rush out and kiss you all before the world ends.....especially Sofia Coppola.....nobody after that, as it's be post-Coppola lips!
  2:58pm
rst-wiley:

ohh, squish.
  3:00pm
Irene:

Here's one big kiss to you all, Alan! I intend on being back same time next week although maybe well all be together in hell. Happy Rapture!
  3:00pm

would have loved to see Paul Simon at Beacon last week; but $150? Geez Paul. At least I have memories of seeing him for $25, including a magical version of "Cool Cool River"
