A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  10:06am

She was Sacha Fierce at Glastonbury. Not sure if the music matched the attitude.
  10:07am

Jennique:

Oh boy, Beyonce (or as my German friend pronounces her name "Boince") performing for 4th of July? UGGGGGH! Happily, I will be out on the west coast for that. Not sure who is performing in San Jose, California.

color of trivia:

"The Statue of Liberty is made of copper 3/32in.thick, the same as two pennies put together."

"... patina is as thick, in many places, as the copper behind it and is protecting the copper from naturally wearing away.

  10:17am
hamburger / london:

I think over in Asia I've heard it pronounced Bee-yons :)
  10:18am

I guess it was punk it up.
I switched over to Beethoven, Symphony 7, Allegretto, 2nd movement --- something serious and heavy for a humid morning
  10:23am
Jennique:

Too bad Serge isn't around to list all the ATM locations for various NY banks. It would sound so much classier.
  10:27am

"j'ai jamais rien vu d'aussi haut"

erella!:

Hi Trouble,
So glad to be listening this morning.
ESG, Joe Bataan, yeah.
  10:44am
kwhitehead:

Lethem's :Chronic City", a fantastic New York novel, features "Some Girls" to great effect, btw.
  10:48am
Bryan:

It also references the Hell/Verlaine split as part of the grand conspiracy. Hi, I'm on the air!
  10:48am
hamburger / london:

and Lisicki's done it! unseeded player in the semi-finals! hohoho
  10:51am
Jennique:

Punk justifies MY existence and justifies MY death! Thanks for making that clear!

  10:58am

  10:58am
Bad Ronald:

Now I see - Thanks Trouble!
  10:59am
dc pat:

anybody else think Hell (Richard) is over-rated? Compared to Verlaine and Thunders, he just doesn't cut it for me..
  11:01am
moose:

my parents used to play the some girls album when i was little, when it was new- i'd often look at the cover- the whole thing made me kind of scared of becoming a grown-up
  11:02am
Kees, Nijmegen (NL):

Over-rated? By whom? So, it depends. He, AND Robert Quine had one good album in him.
  11:02am
PeeveGirl:

Reference (v.) != Refer to (v.)
Reference is to cite. One can reference a paragraph number, but one refers to the ideas in that paragraph.
  11:03am

Patti had a cameo appearance on the Law and Order cop show last week! Talk about generosity.
  11:06am

How punk is EB White?!?
  11:06am

punk still lives in nyc
http://bit.ly/h5AcXo
  11:09am
Bryan:

@ esquared -- word. nice to see you here.
  11:09am
Fiona:

A tear in my eye at the mention of EB White's true New Yorkers (all the way from rainy London)
  11:10am
esquared:

and according to judah friedlander
"I guess if you work for a giant corporation and you've lived here for more than six weeks, you're a New Yorker now. I think I used to know what it meant to be a New Yorker. I guess if you don't eat at Cosi sandwich shop you're a real New Yorker. If you don't go to Hopstop.com to find your way around the city, you're a real New Yorker. If you make too much noise on the sidewalk at night and bother people living in overpriced apartments, you're a real New Yorker. If you get mugged, and then immediately go eat a slice with the money hidden in your sock that they did not steal from you, you're a real New Yorker. If you cross the street wherever and whenever you want, you're a New Yorker. And if you walk fast, you're a New Yorker. Nobody walks fast in this city anymore. Everyone walks slow, and then goes to Equinox."
http://bit.ly/dBq7JW
  11:10am
Jennique:

This song should have been on the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack.
  11:11am
Adrian in London:

I once saw Radiohead play Rhinestone Cowboy. They don't play it anymore.
  11:11am
still b/p:

Poor ol' Glen revealed a few days ago he has Alzheimer's.
  11:13am
Jennique:

esquared - thanks for that quote! Coming from a long time resident of NYC, I concur!
  11:13am
Staceyjoy:

trouble, today's show is brilliant!! xxxooo
  11:13am
esquared:

@ Bryan
yeah, multitasking -- listening to wfmu, while watching wimbledon on Espn3 via computer, tweeting, and tumblring, at the same time...all those but the one i'm getting paid for...
  11:14am
pierre:

judah friedlander's quote is funny, because if you replace "if" by "baguette" it work for Paris to.
  11:14am
jojo:

john lovits in some bad movie with a cowboy hat, with that record getting scratched
  11:14am
G:

@still b/p: And the press release also stated Campbell will still perform. I guess the family thinks they need the money, kinda like the Sinatras for all those years when Frankie was singing pitifully off a teleprompter.
  11:14am
Fiona:

John Rechy! Yes!
  11:16am
Bad Ronald:

RE: Patti Smith - Warmed up for her once. See second paragraph...

http://tinyurl.com/panronald
  11:16am
Dave B:

Ira Glass, when asked the "What makes a New Yorker?" question.

Glass's response?

Oh, for God's sake. I could give a fuck.

That is not only the correct answer, but also, exactly what makes a New Yorker. Ira Glass wins today.
  11:20am
Jennique:

@ Dave B - HAHAHAHA!!!!
  11:21am
dc pat:

ugh. Ira Gass....

Pierre, that's easily the funniest thing I've read/heard all day. I think if you replace "if" with "nn-tss-nn-tss-nn-tss" then it works for DC.
  11:22am
Dave B:

Yeah, not a big fan of Glass, but that quote is spot on.
  11:23am
dc pat:

ok, I'll give him that...
  11:23am
miketp:

when mr. whipple come down
  11:23am
Kevin:

this is an awesome show! thanks for talking on the air!
  11:25am
Dave B:

don't squeeze the chagrin
  11:26am
still b/p:

@ G -- One hopes his circle is smart and sensitive, but, if Glen can pull it off, it might be better and more stimulating than isolation and restriction, a gloomy quarantine and a frightened countdown.
  11:26am
G:

We'll see! ....
  11:29am
pierre:

thanks dc pat, i find it difficult to tell "jokes" in english, my sense of humour (if existing…) is not quite the same while speaking in english. for this non-sense i'll put the credit on my tired mind. I love the "nn-tss-nn-tss-nn-tss" of DC
  11:30am
Randy in NC:

Living in NY '77 to '95, for me, the walking fast was always a safety thing.
  11:30am
Derick Melander:

@ bryanwatterman, and I think maybe a gay rights moment as well? There seem to be so many gay refferences? Or is that just me?
  11:30am
esquared:

one more quote on being a new yorker from colson whitehead, ans somewhat related to what patell is saying about nostalgia:

No matter how long you have been here, you are a New Yorker the first time you say, ''That used to be Munsey's'' or ''That used to be the Tic Toc Lounge.'' That before the Internet cafe plugged itself in, you got your shoes resoled in the mom-and-pop operation that used to be there. You are a New Yorker when what was there before is more real and solid than what is here now."

  11:32am
Brian in UK:

Richard Williams supported Roxy Music as well. He is now chief sports writer for The Guardian newspaper overhere. Top man.
  11:33am
dc pat:

thanks Trouble, this was really cool with amazingly thoughtful analysis. Gotta go.
  11:34am
frenchee:

Wow, great source material from yer guys. I love this version of "Prove It." I hear Jane/Wayne Country, VU, all sorts of diff. influences.
  11:34am
Bryan:

@ Brian -- thanks for catching the Roxy thing. Yes, he was so instrumental to that career.
  11:35am
Randy in NC:

@ Brian in UK - And to tie that together, the last time the first incarnation of Television played together, they opened for Roxy Music at the Paladium (or was it the Academy of Music) on 14th street. Kind of an odd mix in the crowd.
  11:36am
frenchee:

esquared, I love that quote. And I am a real New Yorker. or.. just old.
  11:37am
Brian in UK:

He also put together a Salsa comp in the early 70s on Island. Still play it to this day.
Randy - loved to have seen the clothes at that gig.
  11:39am
Susan:

Just saying, Glen Jones played Rhinestone Cowboy on WFMU a couple of weeks ago.
  11:42am
Brian in UK:

Guardian connection, Mary Harron used to write for the newspaper.
  11:45am
KC in MKE:

Trouble and WFMU does it better than anyone else once again. Able to listen live for once at work. Thanks - great show!
  11:45am
esquared:

word. i'ma be there tonight.
  11:46am
Bryan:

Brian in UK -- I want to hire you to be my UK fact checker! You're awesome.
  11:46am
Jennique:

BOOM. My head is bobbing right now.
  11:46am
Bryan:

Thanks everyone. This was loads of fun. I guess this means I have to keep giving the station money.
  11:47am
esquared:

i thought it was gonna be scenario by tribe called quest, but nice , nonetheless...
  11:48am
Bryan:

frenchee -- YES! I pick that up in the book. This version has even more references, esp in the vocals. I hear Lou, David, & Wayne as well. That drag queen sneer.
  11:48am
Brian in UK:

Rains done stopped. Time to walk the dawg.
  11:49am
Bryan:

Hi, Derick -- missed that comment before. Yeah, one of the surprises for me was how much history of sexuality made its way into this project. I hadn't planned it with that in mind.
  11:51am
Rufus Thomas & Steve Tyler:

And if you don't know how to do it, we'll show you how to walk the dog.
  11:52am
Chris:

listening whilst working in England .. reggae .. we like that ...
  11:57am
Brian in UK:

Thanks fellas. Any charge. It's a beagle pup that follows it's own nose. Be aware.
  11:57am
Kees, Nijmegen (NL):

Another 2 cents, mine. The punk thing during the seventies was more like a rebellion of younger sister & brothers vs. the older lot, and less a generation-thing. I'm starting to think that more and more. It explains the veneration of the Stones, and the rivalry at the same time, a lot. The real generational break came with No New York & Hard Core.

Thanks for the show today.
  11:59am
Brian in UK:

Who would not want to rebel against The Eagles and this is from a Gram Parsons fan at least he had soul. Stones connection.
  12:00pm
frenchee:

fantastic show today, Trouble and Bryan and Cyrus! I wish I could make it to WORD Bookstore tonight to compare drag-queen snarls!
  2:02pm
Bryan:

PeeveGirl -- thanks for the refer/reference heads up, which I missed live. Did I do okay at 11:48? Or is there some other word for what I was describing?
  1:04pm
Bryan:

Just noticed, listening through the conversation, that I said "Slocum" where I really meant "Sloman," around 1:45 or so. I regret the error.
  4:01am
tahomajohn:

great show... just listened through the recent archives... wow.. no no no ..what a heartbreaking song...cheers:)
