Listener comments!

  12:12am
Holly in NC:

Yay Swamp Dogg! A truly gracious & wonderful artist & human being.
  12:15am
Joe McG:

Hey, Holly! You said it. Everyone needs to do him/herself a favor and listen to Michael Shelley's interview with the Dogg earlier today: http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/41034
  12:19am
Julie:

you heard the man, turn off Surface Noise and hit the Shelley archive :)
  12:20am
Joe McG:

Not NOW, Julie. Then they will miss two exclusive live tracks performed by Swamp Dogg for THIS show.
  12:23am
Julie:

Well then you must be clearer!
  12:23am
Julie:

(and by the way, cool!)
  12:23am
Holly in NC:

Please tell Swamp that Holly from the Southern Soul group says "hey".
And BTW Joe, I just listened to last week's show via the archives, really fun! Had forgotten about the awesomeness of Gillian Hills. And is "Toastin' Marshmallow"s available anywhere other than eBay?
@Julie - are you stalking me? ;-)
  12:24am
Julie:

@Holly only intermittently because I am quite lazy.
  12:25am
Billy the buddy:

Well all of these tunes are just damn fantastic.

Thanks Joe, from the swamps of dirty Florida.
  12:26am
Holly in NC:

@Julie :-) Did you see the very last comment on efd's playlist this week, Cake's revenge,,,
  12:26am
mark:

Double dose of the Dogg on WFMU!!!
  12:28am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Thanks for the kind words. "Toastin' Marshmallows" is on Clay's premium this year! @Billy: You bet, Billy! Hi to FLA! @Mark: Hey Mark!
  12:29am
Julie:

it is too hot to toast marshmallows
  12:31am
Chop Scott:

Hey Joe-
Excellent!!!!
  12:32am
Holly in NC:

Do I need to pledge again?

It *is* too hot to toast marshmallows. That's why I'm eating arugula & drinking gin.
  12:32am
Julie:

I'm not drinking tonight! Alert the media!
  12:34am
mark:

WFMU's not selling out, they're buying in tonight!
  12:36am
Julie:

I am too old to boogie
  12:38am
Julie:

WOW that is so cool
  12:40am
Holly in NC:

Seriously Swag Master, how, post-marathon, can I earn Clays' premium?

No one is ever too old to boogie,
  12:42am
Joe McG:

Hey, Holly--Yes, we have all available all year...
  12:43am
mark:

This is super Joe! And I don't mean Charboneau.
  12:44am
Joe McG:

Best version of "My Blue Heaven" since Gene Austin!
  12:46am
Holly in NC:

This is wonderful (Swamp)
  12:48am
Julie:

Bringing Clay chocolate and jewelry also works.
  12:48am
chris:

kirsten and i are listening to your excellent show tonight. thanks for turning me on to swamp dogg. really enjoying it.
  12:48am
Julie:

But YES you must have..and rumor has it Joe can hook you up ;)
  12:49am
Joe McG:

Hey, Chris and Kirsten! Glad you're enjoying it. It's short, but it's good! Love the one-man-band effect.
  12:49am
chris:

also joe you are a gennelman and a great.
  12:50am
Julie:

hi Chris & Kirsten! I was confused for a sec since Clay's wife is Kirsten too
  12:50am
Julie:

yeah for one guy it sure sounds phenomenal
  12:56am
Holly in NC:

Hmm. While I am a candy buyer by trade, weather is not conducive to shipping at the moment.
As for jewelry, see
http://www.etsy.com/listing/64201871/sterling-silver-cat-nose-print-necklace
I am plotting how to tranq (er, immortalize) my beasts as we speak.
  1:01am
Joe McG:

Good one, Moms!
  1:03am
Julie:

them health nuts is tasty
  1:13am
Matt from Springfield:

Hello, happy way-past-evening to you all!
Miss a bunch of Swamp Dogg but I'm looking forward to his SPECIAL songs later! Thanks for scoring a custom performance, Joe!
  1:14am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Hi! You're really not drinking tonight??? What will the neighbors think??
@Holly: I toast to you! I'm having gin as well!!
  1:14am
Joe McG:

Bad news, Matt: I done played that thing already!
  1:15am
Matt from Springfield:

Ooof! Just have to listen to that on the first hour then!
  1:16am
Holly in NC:

If Doris Duke is forthcoming, may I humbly request "we're more than strangers" or :"ghost of myself'?
  1:18am
Joe McG:

Hey, Holly! Great suggestions, but Michael did "Ghost' this morning. I'm going to do the one that tears my guts out. I think you'll recognize it when I start it up.
  1:22am
Daniel T from Copenhagen:

Oh boy! I'm loving this set.
  1:22am
Daniel T from Copenhagen:

Oh boy! I'm loving this set.
  1:24am
Holly in NC:

@ Matt - [clink]
@ Julie - share a pickled okra spear?
@ Joe -this song makes me cry (Sandra P.) - and you're going to torture me further? If so, You OWE me a Clay premium!
  1:24am
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah! Loretta!
  1:27am
Holly in NC:

Oh dear god. You evil man.
  1:28am
Joe McG:

I feel like crying.
  1:28am
Holly in NC:

I AM crying.
  1:32am
Matt from Springfield:

How awesome that so many comedians from decades back (some of whom aren't even alive anymore) are on the playlist, enjoying Surface Noise :)
  1:35am
Joe McG:

They all come out for Swamp Dogg!
  1:39am
Matt from Springfield:

As we know thanks to this show: Andy Kim and Tony Wine (and others), as The Archies!
  1:41am
Holly in NC:

If you play "ha ha -the laughing song" I really may lose it - that's a little too much. Any other song, fine ;-)
  1:46am
Holly in NC:

I "met" Swamp via "Right Arm" (Swamp's own version), so thank you, What a GREAT show this is!
  1:47am
Matt from Springfield:

Something was FAMILIAR about that intro riff!!
I like the Yugoslav version better, being part Slovenian myself! :)
  1:48am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Thanks! @Matt: Yes, I put that Yugoslavian version on my premium last year. You have to admit, the harpsichord on this version is pretty killer, though!
  1:50am
Holly in NC:

I always want to segue Marianne's Summer Nights with Suicide is Painless, for some reason.
However, this segue is priceless! I really thought Grease soundtrack was forthcoming, excellent fakeout!
  1:53am
Joe McG:

That would've been a great segue, Holly. Wish I'd brought my MASH 45!
  1:57am
Holly in NC:

Candi Staton's "His Hands" would be worthy of play tonight, Will Oldham, like Swamp, can really channel his inner abused woman...
  1:58am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, one of the "busiest" tracks of that era I've heard! That drum machine on top of all those other sounds, makes it sound like you're playing 2 mp3s of the same song with a slight delay!
  2:00am
Matt from Springfield:

Wooo! All hail those "Scratchy 45s"!! Perfect anthem for SF!
And I believe this is the "Eighteen With A Bullet" guy, he must have loved the old R&R sound.
  2:01am
12539:

Joe, tonight's show is excellent as usual, but I must go...knowing there will be an archive in the morning helps me sleep in peace...maybe just one more song...
  2:01am
Joe McG:

@Matt: Yeah, I think "I'm on Fire" is one of the most manic disco records every made. You got it: Pete played on a lot of British R&R records in the 70s.
  2:02am
Holly in NC:

@Matt - yes.
Springfield, MA?
  2:03am
Matt from Springfield:

Springfield, VA.
There does seem to be one somewhere in every state!
  2:07am
Holly in NC:

I'm originally from Milford, another one in every state town. Makes me hard to stalk ;-)
  2:09am
Matt from Springfield:

Well, you say you're in NC -- but not necessarily in Milford, NC right now ;)
  2:10am
Holly in NC:

Oh I'm in Durham now, that secret's long out of the bag!
  2:11am
Matt from Springfield:

Lot of great upcoming shows!
I've been looking forward to Julie's live sets and Brian's guest from Dius Records. I also listen to Irwin and that sounds cook too.
@Holly: The HOLLY-Durham metro area! ;)
  2:20am
Joe McG:

Sweet dreams, 12539.
  2:21am
Holly in NC:

@ Matt - Heh ;-)

Must go make belated dinner ( something more substantial than arugula), will try and listen through kitchen wall.
Joe, seriously, amazing show. Thanks again!
  2:22am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Thanks again, Holly, enjoy your late dinner!
  2:27am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Aha! Just as you played a lot of country @2am to help out listeners who miss Toothpick Rhythm, this week it sounds like you're dedicating your last hour to those who miss Noise & Syrup, right?
  2:29am
Joe McG:

Ha ha, yes a bit noisier than usual! Noise much more to the Surface. Soon to break, however, like the weather.
  2:36am
Nat the Parker:

Sinead........nice!
  2:38am
maestroso:

Yeah, that was a nice track. Never heard it before.
  2:40am
Joe McG:

A lot of hatin' goin' around this week with that picture on the Internet, so I wanted to get some Sinead out there. She recorded some great stuff.
  2:40am
Holly in NC:

I love Sinead. But y'all should also check the Voice Squad for the most affecting rendition of I am Stretched On Your Grave (In my obviously not so humble opinion)
  2:40am
Matt from Springfield:

Nice guitaring, for a moment I thought that was an old Vanguard label song.

@Joe: Speaking of other 2011 premiums, have you taken a listen to Nat Roe's Reverse Adult Contemporary premium?
  2:41am
Holly in NC:

What picture? Did she diss the pope again?
  2:42am
Joe McG:

Oh, Holly, the Voice Squad! Yes, that's a great one. I just like this one's combo of old song with hip-hop beat. I hate to send you to the pic, but it shows a much older and less slim Sinead these days.
  2:43am
Joe McG:

@Matt: I haven't heard Nat's premium. Is it a good 'ne?
  2:46am
Matt from Springfield:

Yes, Nat's premium is a bit ADD (kind of like the hour-long mashups/cutups he tends to do), but I love it I think because it's like a Time-Life commercial--it refs all the easy listening #1s that still litter store PA systems to this day, but just the hook, then it goes back in time to the previous one!
  2:47am
Joe McG:

Wow! And I thought it was a lot of work to record a bunch of old 45s! Must've taken him months.
  2:48am
Matt from Springfield:

I'm sure it took him awhile to track down all the songs. There's actually some good songs thrown in as well, whatever was #1, so not all of it's crap. But it's an entertaining listen: "I don't want the actual songs, I just want to experience the songs!"
  2:50am
Brian in UK:

Good morning. What a busy comments column.
Matt are you saying that No.1s are necessarily good?
  2:51am
Joe McG:

Accelerated for a faster generation!
  2:52am
Holly in NC:

I am sure that the much older and less slim Sinead is & will always be approximately 1 trillion times more gorgeous than my or most anyone else's older and less slim self, so need for a link..
When your show's over I'm gonna put on "Troy" and wallow. Pass the Kleenex! What a night.
  2:53am
Holly in NC:

NO need.
  2:56am
Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: Morning! What I mean is that #1s are neutral and not moral--they are whatever people propel to the top of the charts. Some of those are good, even on the easy listening/adult contemporary charts. But it's funny hearing clips of those that are NOT as well! ("You Light Up My Life", boy bands, even "Save All Your Kisses For Me"! That was a EUROVISION winner, I have no clue how the hell that ended up on the US #1 AC!)
  2:56am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Passing the Kleenex! @ Brian: Hi, welcome! Stay tuned for Mary!
  2:57am
Matt from Springfield:

And can you believe that while Eurovision winner "Save All Your Kisses For Me" went to #1 on the US AC chart, Eurovision winner "Waterloo" from Abba did not! Where's the justice in that...
(Though "Fernando" does appear on that list, not as much Abba as I would have expected.)
  2:59am
Matt from Springfield:

Great Googley Moogley indeed, The Spaniels from '56! Somebody wake up Spike! :)

Thanks for a wonderful show Joe! I'll hopefully see some of you on Mary's playlist!
  3:00am
Brian in UK:

You just do not get the wacky odd No1s anymore.

Joe, you are the man.
  3:00am
Joe McG:

Take care, Matt, have a great Sunday! Thanks for listening, everybody!
  8:29am
Cal Zone!:

Fantastic show! Thanks for the Swamp Dogg sets! I caught Jerry in Rochester this past Saturday at the 'Big Rib Fest' and he autographed my prized copy of 'Total Destruction..' while singing 'Got To Get A Message To You' on the grassy lawn. It was quite surreal and fantastic!
