Live performance and chat with Matthew Mullane

From an unassuming Ohio town comes a mighty fine fingerstyle guitarist named Matthew Mullane. His debut album was recently released on Vin Du Select Qualitite, or VDSQ, as part of the label's Solo Acoustic series, also featuring the likes of Thurston Moore, Mark McGuire, Allen Karpinski, Chris Brokaw, and more. Matthew apparently sent in a tape blind and VDSQ liked it so much they signed him up. While he was in NYC on tour Irene brought Matthew Mullane to WFMU for a live performance.

  12:21pm
Brian in UK:

Hello Irene & everyone. As you had Kalli on last week with a west coast vibe you might like Jonathan Wilson, out soon over your way.

I must become more acquainted with nerdkween.
  12:22pm
Van in Dallas:

This song has a sort of an ethereal Cocteau Twins feel to it, to me
  12:23pm
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Hi Irene and everyone!
  12:29pm
Irene:

Hi Everybody! Thanks for tuning in. And hi Yair! Hope can get you into the studio when you're here.

  1:26pm
yair yona (tel aviv, Earth):

  1:34pm
Marmalade Kitty:

this is annoying
  1:35pm
Carmichael:

Hi Irene, Michael and suave listeners.
  1:35pm
Carmichael:

Sorry, Matthew not Michael.
  1:37pm
Marmalade Kitty:

guitar great.. but what was all that schlurrrping noise O.o Ahhh blurb
  1:37pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

that was probably exactly what it sounded like, MK!
  1:47pm
J J:

That was purrrdy.
  1:47pm
Marmalade Kitty:

my ears are annoyingly over sensitive sometimes
  1:48pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

this sounds like a lot of the field recordings I do in Ohio as well...always, there are crows!
  1:48pm
T-Zero:

Simply out of pure curiosity, where in Ohio? I note he now lives in Chicago.
  1:49pm
Marmalade Kitty:

:)
  1:51pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

he said he was based out of Cleveland for awhile, and that's where I've lived my whole life; but you can go anywhere in the state and those damned crows will wake your ass up at 6am.
  1:52pm
Irene:

Hiram is the town Matthew's from according to his website
  1:53pm
Carmichael:

The crows in California have attitude. They fight with the jays like Crips and Bloods.
  1:53pm
Van in Dallas:

Nice set with Matthew Mullane there Irene - many thanks for that, I really enjoyed that.
  1:54pm
Marmalade Kitty:

I like crows :) seaguls grind a bit
  1:54pm
T-Zero:

@DCE/Irene: Ah. I was curious if he was associated with Kent State due to their association with folk music. Hiram would be up by Cleveland. I'd looked at his web site, but notice that (Hiram) mention. Thanks.
  1:55pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

yeah, Hiram is about 60 miles east...nice little sleepy college town.
  1:55pm
T-Zero:

But *didn't* notice.
  1:58pm
Van in Dallas:

Love the WFMU archives :)
  2:00pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

ya know, I've got to say I've tried many times to get something from archives, and I'm not the most computer-savvy type of guy, but I'm not totally pathetic...but I've never had ANY luck whatsoever. I must be missing something.
  2:00pm
Azam:

@Kitty ...oh here in Brighton seagulls do more than grind a bit..they go round in gangs intimidating people and causing chaos ripping open bins bags.
  2:01pm
T-Zero:

@DCE: You mean the free music archive?
  2:02pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

no, the FMU archives. Haven't tried in awhile.
  2:02pm
Marmalade Kitty:

mutant seaguls half the size of a man, I swear, in Scarborough..!
  2:04pm
Looms:

@Azam & Kitty: here in Brest, a neighbor had to be driven to hospital after seagull attack (5 stitches on skull)
  2:05pm
woj:

hi irene! happy mellow monday!
  2:06pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Hitchcockian :)
  2:07pm
T-Zero:

@DCE: Ah. Hmmm. I dunno. I've never had to do anything more than click the link playlist/archive link and then click mps from the program web page for windows media player to auto-launch, or on the main archive page just click the pop-up player. Don't know what to say, other than that's really too bad.
  2:09pm
T-Zero:

Whoa. I didn't realise Fahey had died.
  2:09pm
Looms:

Indeed! Seaguls can be very aggressive when they're nesting.
  2:10pm
Van in Dallas:

@DCE - All I do is click to view the full schedule, then "Arch" next to the show I want (usually Dark Night of the Soul ;) ), then "See the Playlist" for a given episode, and finally "Listen to this show"...
  2:11pm
T-Zero:

@Irene: This has been a really superb program today. Thanks!
  2:11pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

see, something must not be loading right on the browser--I've never seen anything like "listen to this show"--that would've been so EASY!!
  2:12pm
Irene:

Dead Corporate Eyes, email me off the comments page and I'll let you know how.
  2:16pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I see here how it works on the work computer--maybe I'll just try Firefox on my home computer.
  2:18pm
T-Zero:

@DCE: Yeah. I use Firefox. Never tried it with IE, and don't have any other.
  2:19pm
Looms:

Sounds like there's a fairy in the machine; nice track.
  2:20pm
