Listener comments!

  11:48am
Van in Dallas:

Is it too early to start the drum roll? :)

Hi Amanda, good day to you!
  11:50am
Amanda:

It's never too early! Hi Van, nice to see you and hope you're having a good Humpday.
  11:53am
Van in Dallas:

It's a cool but pretty day here in Big D, lovely! AND! we didn't get wiped out by an asteroid yesterday, so there's that! :)
  11:57am
listener james from westwood:

good wednesday all! will be listening to the ns at low volume during a conf call today; will prob. be the only thing that gets me thru it!
  11:57am
Van in Dallas:

oooooooooh yeah....the national EAS test is today. That will be your closing today will it not?
  11:57am
Doug S.:

Nothing beats pre-show chatter!
  11:58am
Van in Dallas:

Hi Doug! Hi LJFW!
  11:58am
Amanda:

Nope! After the EAS test I'll still have an hour to go.
  12:00pm
Amanda:

Happy conf'ing, James!

@Doug -- You're right. Not even the actual show is as good as the pre-show chatter...
  12:01pm
Lizardner Dave:

Hey everyone. All ready for the big test that WON'T be happening on this stream at 2pm ET?
  12:02pm
Doug S.:

Howdy Van!

Yeah, Amanda, it's all downhill chatter from here.
  12:02pm
Amanda:

I think Lizardner Dave is on to something exciting here.
  12:03pm
Van in Dallas:

oh that's right. The EAS test does not include our internet fun.
  12:03pm
jill:

just checking in, not much else to say about that.
  12:03pm
Amanda:

Hi Jill!
  12:07pm
efd:

Hi Amanda! Hi everyone else! Hard to top Dom Mariani in any configuration.

I just might have to switch back to the mothership at 2 just to hear what happens.
  12:08pm
Amanda:

efd, I don't blame you for a minute. (Or 15 seconds, or however long it takes...)

I know -- was so happy to find that comp in the library! Dom FTW!
  12:13pm
Carmichael:

Hi Amanda and fellow fellers. I'll be in and out today, with meetings.

This group is ripping off Gimme Three Steps note-for-note.
  12:13pm
efd:

Man, this Bad Boy record is right up my alley! Let me guess - a dollar at the Record Fair?
  12:14pm
Carmichael:

Todd!!! Best song on Hermit of Mink Hollow (though they're all smashing).
  12:15pm
Amanda:

Hi Carmichael! I agree -- have been meaning to play this for months.

Evan -- yep, exactly right, but stay tuned to hear the whole story.
  12:15pm
Doug S.:

I was once in a band that played a show for which the Del Fuegos were the open act. (They were called the Jogging Wankers then.)
  12:16pm
Amanda:

"Before they had a record out / before they went gold and started to blow." -- Juliana Hatfield
  12:19pm
Li'l Missy B.:

Hey, Amanda—Can you do your OWN 2:00 PM Freak-Out Elert Test? I would rather hear yours.
  12:21pm
Brian in UK:

Hello.
  12:23pm
Amanda:

Hi Brian!

Missy -- I thought about it, but... well, you'll see. This is a pre-recorded show although I am talking to you in real-time with my typing voice.
  12:24pm
Brian in UK:

Doug, have you slept at all this week? By the way, did the Jogging Wankers become the Fizzing Lightbulbs?
  12:25pm
seang:

for a second I thought this was "Joey"
  12:25pm
Li'l Missy B.:

Alas! Then at 2 PM I shall chant "Nazario Scenario" over and over until the Elert stops.
  12:26pm
pgw in mntclr:

this is one of my favorites from the "doing gigs in whiteface" era
  12:28pm
Doug S.:

Sure, I slept like a baby. The Jogging Wankers begat the Del Fuegos which begat children's music maven Dan Zanes. As it were.
  12:29pm
Carmichael:

And where do the Wiggles fall in all this?
  12:29pm
Amanda:

Let's all chant that!!!!

seang -- I know, they sound alike. Matt & I had a good discussion going a while back about the pervasive violin in this album.

pgw, remind me to do my show in whiteface one of these days
  12:29pm
Amanda:

The Wiggles < the Woggles
  12:32pm
pgw in mntclr:

will do
  12:34pm
efd:

Ooh, pardon me for co-opting your comments board for my own self-promotion, but I have to mention that Jerry Shirley, who played some percussion on The Madcap Laughs and some drums on the Barret LP (not to mention a highly successful career with Humble Pie and others), will be my special guest next Wednesday night between 9 and midnight.

And now back to your regular comments.
  12:35pm
Amanda:

EXCITEMENT! Thanks for reminding us of the Jerry Shirley appearance, efd.
  12:36pm
Li'l Missy B.:

Wait! How did you do that? `How did you know you would have to explain you're pre-recorded right there if you're pre-recorded?
  12:36pm
Brian in UK:

Existential or what? Mungo like empirical.
  12:37pm
efd:

Damn, I bought some records from Joe a few years ago too - how could I have missed Bad Boy?! UNLESS YOU GOT THERE FIRST?
  12:39pm
Amanda:

Well, I knew when I was recording it that it was being prepared for today, but I always manage to confuse myself as well as all of you with this time-travel business.

Joe was selling a bunch of good records for one dollar each because they had skips on them. The Bad Boy was one. I think this was in 2008 or 2009. I AM VICTORIOUS
  12:42pm
pgw in mntclr:

walking and talking > kicking and screaming
  12:50pm
Van in Dallas:

Ah, the chorus finally. Or is that the bridge.
  12:50pm
Doug S.:

I have this Clack album!
  12:51pm
Amanda:

You do not! Shut up! Thomas has a big box of them at home and gave me one when I was visiting them recently. I had never heard the whole thing before, it's amazing.
  12:52pm
ndbob:

hello Amanda and everyone!
  12:53pm
Amanda:

Hi ndbob! Welcome home.
  12:57pm
Doug S.:

Amanda, that "New York City Album" album has a track on it titled "NYC Firefighters rushing to a fire." I played it on my first show back on the air after 9/11: http://tinyurl.com/bwswt3p
  12:59pm
Amanda:

On mine it's called just "The Fire." And, spoiler alert, I am going to play that track at the end of today's show! I am excited to check out your archive later today -- excellent choice for a broadcast like that.
  1:03pm
Doug S.:

You're right, is "The Fire." For the purposes of my playlist I called the "artist" NYC Firefighters rushing to a fire!
  1:11pm
listener james from westwood:

ahhhhh ... full-volume nazario scenario. altho' it was a nice backbeat to the conf call, which itself was less trying than average.
  1:13pm
Amanda:

Glad to hear it! And welcome back to full-strength streaminess.
  1:25pm
listener james from westwood:

Will DL the archive so I can hear Hour 1 at its designated, window-rattling decibels.
  1:26pm
Hugo:

Funny you should talk about fires. One of the items I picked up while over in NY, at the Strand, was this one:

http://tinyurl.com/bvtxgva

The Foundations!! That takes me back to Radio Luxembourg in them olden days!
  1:28pm
Amanda:

Hey Hugo! That certainly looks like a cool book for us disaster-minded types.
  1:29pm
ndbob:

ah a pack song i haven't heard before
  1:30pm
Amanda:

Cool -- yeah it is the B-side of "Wide Trackin"
  1:38pm
Carmichael:

OK, back. I love the Foundations also.
  1:57pm
Marsha:

We flock to YOU, Amanda.
  1:58pm
listener james from westwood:

quick, play a newsreader talking russian or chinese to make it seem like the net's been taken over for those flocking to the web!
  1:58pm
Amanda:

I accept you with open arms. xoxox!
  1:59pm
ndbob:

it does get activated for weather emergencies, etc.
  2:00pm
Hugo:

The Foundations tune was a no.1 hit in the UK charts back in 1967. And the place to find what was in the charts was Radio Luxembourg, Sunday at eleven in the evening, hosted by Don Wardell. Ah, memories ...

http://www.offringa.nl/radioluxembourg.htm
  2:00pm
Amanda:

lJfW, that is a great idea! I can't though... on this pre-recorded deal
  2:02pm
Amanda:

It's in your eyes! I'TS IN YOUR EYES!!!! DEAR GOD, IT'S IN YOUR EEEEEEYYYYES...
  2:03pm
Carmichael:

You're playing Richard Thompson?!?! You're really something else, Amanda.
  2:04pm
Amanda:

'Twerent' nothin'. I love him.
  2:04pm
Amanda:

*Ahem: "'Tweren't"
  2:05pm
Carmichael:

As do I. Yet you're the only DJ willing to play him, it seems. Just saw him again about a month ago.
  2:11pm
Amanda:

Ooh, lucky. I am always up for listening to his solo stuff or the Fairports, it is so pretty.
  2:13pm
ndbob:

excellent show Amanda! catch the rest on the archive
  2:13pm
Van in Dallas:

I forgot to switch over to "the mothership" for the alert.
  2:14pm
Amanda:

Glad to have you this week as always, ndbob. Keep on keepin' on.

Van -- I am dying to hear how Duane handled it! (With characteristic aplomb, I am assuming.)
  2:16pm
efd:

I'm not going to spoil anything, unless there's a National Emergency Spoiler Alert test.
  2:19pm
Amanda:

I think GTDR is going to participate in the National Spoiler Alert Test, just for the fun of it.

Hey, NYC/NJ'ers -- who is going to Maxwell's tonight for the Reigning Sound and Jackie and the Cedrics?
  2:22pm
Gene:

I am going to that!
  2:23pm
Amanda:

I am psyched to see you there!
  2:29pm
Carmichael:

One of the trifecta of great Kinks albums, along with Sleepwalker and Misfits. Oh, and Soap Opera!
  2:34pm
Amanda:

You guys, when I was entering this track in the playlist the auto-fill recognized it, meaning it has been played on the station before -- and recently. WFMU.
  2:37pm
Van in Dallas:

Right you are Amanda. http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/41654
  2:41pm
Amanda:

Swank. David's show is awesome...
  2:55pm
listener james from westwood:

looking forward to looping back & hearing hour 1. thanks for the show, amanda!
  2:56pm
Van in Dallas:

Thanks Amanda, enjoyed the show. Good work as always. 'Til next week!
  2:57pm
Dervish:

I am already loopy and I listened to the whole thing.
  2:57pm
Amanda:

Yay! Thanks Van and James! See you both next week, I hope. Have a good one.
  2:58pm
Amanda:

Dervish -- aww, you're in good company.
  3:01pm
Carmichael:

Thanks, Amanda. See you next week.
  8:22pm
Listener Schned:

Thank the Drummer Some for your archived shows, as I can never bust out to listen mid-day Wednesdays- liking the shifting gears to R&B etc, but loving the return to Rock'n'Roll !!
Yet missing the free karaoke from you and Elvis Costello (waah!) You're always in tune, it's adorable, hearty-poo's Contributor Schned
  1:46pm
Lizardner Dave:

Good choice for an "encore presentation" today.
  12:08pm
Van in DC:

Quick! Back to the Future!
  12:26pm
Van in DC:

This show is sounding just as great the third time around :)
  12:03pm
Uncle Michael:

First time for me!
  12:12pm
Uncle Michael:

My homey, Freedy....*swoon*.
