Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

Hi Davice

Davice:

Although I may not comment every Thursday I love your show!
  8:02pm
G:

Silver Quintette always means the weekend is about to start, if we can count Friday as honorary weekend. Righteous!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm

Anyone can post now....you no longer have to do the algebra equation to post

G; Man, are you right...
  8:04pm
Davice:

I picked up this track on CD and it is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
sinner:

I picked up a slew of gospel 45s in Birmingham on Sunday. Most of the show's from this stash, especially the scratchy ones!
  8:06pm
Davice:

Kevin, Requests are a pain in the )( I know but do you think you might sqeeze in some Blind Boys from Alabama?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
sinner:

Requests are NOT a pain....I can't get any ABB on tonight, though. Anything in mind?
  8:11pm
Davice:

Lve the BB of A, saw them live, out of this world. Just thought if you had some of their music. If not, that's ok, you play all good stuff.
  8:12pm
Davice:

God said it and that's good enough for me!
  8:13pm
G:

I was always assuming, from back in the days prior to comments on this show, that Kevin pretaped his weekly hour and forwarded it to the station from his perch in Alabamm, like Vicki and Nardwuar and others who are not in NY/NJ and do hour-long early-evening music shows.

If so, that would make during-show requests kind of tricky. :-)
  8:14pm
Davice:

But he could get the request on next week!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
sinner:

Thank you G! But I WILL play some Blind Boys next week. Davice, you can count on that.
  8:15pm
G:

Sounds good. :-)

The little guy who could hold a note forever died a little while ago.

Kevin - Most of the stuff you play happened b4 I was born . . . and it is good stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
sinner:

yeah....history is a funny thing.......
  8:23pm
G:

Could that be THE Staple Singers? or are Staples Singers different?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
sinner:

It's actually, always The Staples Singers. But everyone always drops the "s". Like in tennis shoes. People say tenna shoes.
  8:27pm
G:

Never knew that. I knew them starting from their big pop breakthrough period, I'll Take You There etc., 1972 if memory serves. But I'd read they had roots far back in time.

Davice:

I was a young kid in 72

didn't even know this music existed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm

Staples first record came out in 1953. They released about 40 sides during the 1950s. All killer.

NJ has the best moosic

G:

I was 13-14 years old in 72, but old enough to be listening to the radio and buying 45s... I lived in the UK then, and you had to special-order the American music that wasn't on the UK charts (which meant most of it, in those days).

The record store people told me that for months they thought I was a precociously young DJ for special-ordering every week all that American soul music that wasn't on the charts or radio over there. I got US charts out of the weekly music press in the UK, and ordered from those LOL

Greetings Brother Nutt!
Thanks for the Staple Singers this week! My absolute favorite group of all time! :) (before the "I'll Take You There" years). If I remember correctly, they decided along with one of their record labels to drop the "s" in "Staples", but I may be wrong.
If you are taking requests, how about the Leach Brothers Quartet please?!? I know you have played at least one song by them, but would love to hear more!
Sinner's Crossroads is definitely one of the bright spots in my week that I look forward to!
To tide people over through the week between SC broadcasts, I don't know if you want to give a link to a fantastic blog I've discovered with more wonderful old classic gospel than you can shake a Sinner's Crossroads fan at (and other genres, as well), check out:
