Listener comments!

  3:01pm
G:

I just finished garding, and when Lee Morgan plays the week is officially half over. Downslope from here...
  3:01pm
kat330:

A trumpet clam always heralds the start of Irwin's show for me.
  3:02pm
Caryn:

Now I'm wondering if there's some hidden meaning to the 2 and the 5 in the picture.
  3:02pm
Answering the Rhetorical Question:

I believe a birth certificate of some sort is acceptable to many.
  3:03pm
kat330:

There it was! :) [the clam]
  3:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: Sliding down with Lee Morgan is a great feeling. Irwin's programming to come!
  3:03pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Wooo!
  3:04pm
kat330:

Who IS it that made those glissando hoooo noises in pop culture...?
  3:04pm
Answering the Rhetorical Question:

That yowling is musique concrete from a closed ward, not actually Irwin hooting over Lee Morgan
  3:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Trumpet clam"? Is a trumpet and a clam in the dictionary next to "Irwin Chusid's craziness"?
  3:04pm
Eric:

Mr Bill?
  3:05pm
northguineahills:

Terry!
  3:05pm
kat330:

Irwin, I fink you're fweaky and I like you a lot.
  3:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Eric "OHHHH NOHHHH!", "OOOOOH!"
  3:05pm
kat330:

@Eric: Yes! Though I wonder if he wasn't preceded by some '50s or '60s clown. Something from childhood.
  3:08pm
Caryn:

@Matt: now that you've uncovered Irwin's unusual trumpet & clam parentage, it might be good manners not to spread it around too much... Or what the hell, tell everyone!
  3:09pm
kat330:

@Matt: Clam as in not quite achieving the intended note. Though many jazz artists might claim a clam was intentional, I think the aim, true or not, can be discerned.
  3:10pm
Mike East:

a co worker was playing "Yes I Can, No You Can't" on Monday, and I got very confused. 'What day is it? I didn't know you listened to wfmu....oh, wait...you just like jazz'
  3:10pm
kat330:

The pic: Hmm, "tooth and nail."
  3:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Huh, seems Irwin's public birth certificate has mentioned trumpet and clam parentage all along, we just never thought to look it up...
  3:11pm
Michael:

I'm reading "Love Goes to Buildings on Fire" and pulled out my beat up disc of In C to go along with my reading. How timely Irwin so thanks!
  3:12pm
kat330:

I heard it was a trumpeter swan and a clam.
  3:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: One could play an Irwin archive at any time. But Wednesdays were MADE for Irwin! And Lee Morgan! And Amanda!!!
@kat: Ah, a supposed "clam" during the theme song.
  3:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Terry Riley's always awesome, particularly with this long, synthy prog-y piece. I'm loving it!
  3:13pm
Caryn:

@kat: or "I'm running a red light, because I have red-green colour blindness, as proven by this Ishihara colour test plate".
  3:14pm
Kat in Chicago:

There is no music I love more than "A Rainbow In Curved Air." Trying not to weep at my desk right now.
  3:15pm
Mike East:

@Matt - that's true, but I have certain routines burned into my head. Hearing that tune at 3pm on Wednesday is one of them. Much like that dog, Pavlov.
  3:15pm
Caryn:

@Matt: yes, thanks to Donald Trump, who for months pestered Irwin to show his long-form birth certificate, because Donald had mistakenly heard that Irwin had "Trump & clam" parentage and wanted to avoid any claims to the Trump millions.
  3:15pm
kat330:

@Caryn: Running this light, tooth and nail, by hook or by crook -- where's the 2?
  3:16pm
Caryn:

@kat: it's the number on the Ishihara test
  3:16pm
kat330:

Ohhhh, never mind. I found it. :)
  3:16pm
kat330:

:)
  3:18pm
kat330:

King molar -- #5 is first upper right molar. Dental and eye charts. Lots of food for thought there.
  3:18pm
Caryn:

@kat: don't forget the elements filling the background of the picture
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Good one, Caryn!
  3:20pm
kat330:

@Kat in C: This IS quite nice.
  3:22pm
northguineahills:

This is a side of Irwin I haven't seen. I need to leave, but I love A Rainbow in Curved Air so much!
  3:22pm
kat330:

I wonder if you can spin the "wheel" of his upper body. Looks like you can.
  3:24pm
kat330:

Unsure about the bottom wheel layer as it appears it's pinned.
  3:24pm
Parq:

Yes! "Old Woman of Haunted House" is next, right?
  3:24pm
G:

Screw it. Just took a shower and am giving myself the afternoon off from deodorant, so I don't build up resistance to it. After all, I don't have to talk to anyone face to face for hours. You can't smell anything through the board, right?
  3:25pm
Caryn:

@kat: Yeah, I clicked on the link on Chatem's name, and most of his work has wheels the viewers are encouraged to turn. Nice.
  3:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

Smell-O-Net isn't around yet, so I guess you're fine, G.
  3:27pm
G:

Sawright.
  3:28pm
Denise in DC:

Dunno, G, I just got a whiff of brimstone . . .
  3:28pm
webhamster Henry:

This backing Music is from Garage Band.
  3:28pm
kat330:

*sniff* *sniff* -- G, what's that I smell? :)
  3:31pm
kat330:

@Caryn: Then the bottom gear's gotta move, too, for the upper one to do so.
For anyone out there who enjoyed Molly Ivins' political punditry as much as I, just found out Kathleen Turner is doing a one-woman show as Ivins. Most mollusk!
  3:31pm
G:

hahahaha! i'm just out of the shower, though, so till the 4 or 5 PM hour, it should be the vile creepy stink of soap and shampoo.
  3:32pm
G:

@kat: that's man smell, right there :-P
  3:32pm
Caryn:

@kat: yeah, I think the "pin" is the crank with which you spin the wheels.
  3:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Irwin thinks PIE!!!!!
  3:33pm
kat330:

@G: I think you are correct!
@Caryn: I think you are correct!
  3:35pm
kat330:

@Matt: I thought it was COOKIE!!!!!!
  3:35pm
Caryn:

Oh lord, the aliens are back... They evidently didn't get enough yesterday.
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

PIE is the ultimate truth, even to COOKIE. Because how else can you measure the circumference of any sweet, without PIE!!!
  3:37pm
Denise in DC:

We all deserve a slice of the pie.
  3:37pm
kat330:

That's gotta be 7 years bad luck.
  3:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thunderclap Newman, with a non-hit! Pete Townsend's side project.

So, the aliens that are in Irwin's brain would actually be in all of his listeners' brains as well then? If there trying to make us think what they want Irwin to think. Is that correlation, or causality?
  3:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Denise!
For springtime, a nice slice of banana cream or lemon meringue!
  3:39pm
Woo:

I had a feeling Speedy Keen was dead. Who isn't dead these days?
  3:39pm
pie squared:

Not in trickle down economics!
  3:40pm
Denise in DC:

I'll take lemon, thanks.

to quote George W, "Make the pie higher!"
  3:40pm
Denise in DC:

Oh, and hi, Matt!
  3:40pm
kat330:

Mmm, key lime!
  3:41pm
Carmichael:

Wasn't Speedy Keen the guitarist for Newman?
  3:42pm
Woo:

Guitar and vocals
  3:43pm
kat330:

@Woo: Yes, and it's only going to seem moreso as time goes by.
  3:43pm
?:

its nice not hearing "Something's the Air"
  3:45pm
Irwin:

Speedy was the drummer and vocalist. Jimmy McCulloch (later of Wings) was guitarist. Pete Townshend produced & played bass. Capt. Andy Newman played lots of instruments, including piano.
  3:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

I think we've heard this Michael Charles Smith track (or another like it before). I like it--smooth, mysterious percussion rhythms.
  3:52pm
Caryn:

It's kinda weird whenever you hear more mainstream hits on Irwin's show...
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Is "Sleeping Satellite" a mainstream hit?
It may feel weird to have Irwin's little-exposed songs juxtaposed against radio hits, but it's not at all unusual during his program.
  3:53pm
Carmichael:

Thanks, Irwin. I have a video of them somewhere, and I recall Newman playing piano in his ever-present hat (kinda like Dr. John).
  3:55pm
Caryn:

@Matt: it was in Europe. Constantly on MTV and radio at the time.
  3:56pm
Denise in DC:

I refuse to believe that this is the Bee Gees.
  3:57pm
Denise in DC:

*These are* the Bee Gees.
  3:57pm
Denise in DC:

Whatever.
  3:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Flying Gibb Brothers! The Notorious Gibb Brothers!
Showing some coun-tray side of them! LOVE IT!
  4:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

The terrorists will NOT WIN at WFMU! Not as long as its killer swag can get out!!
  4:01pm
Carmichael:

Denise, you should get their box set that was released a year or so ago. You'd be surprised at the number of groups the Bee Gees are.
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeping_Satellite
Nice single cover design! Like the "quirky", "cute" designs of the 2000s.
  4:01pm
Parq:

I would note parenthetically that "Expedited Freight" would be a good name for a band.
  4:01pm
kat330:

@Caryn: Well before your time, but given your range of info, are you familiar with a Euro jukebox "fave" with the title/lyrics "Hot, hot, hot, hot choc-o-late"? Heard it constantly while traveling the continent in '74, but couldn't easily locate it on the web.
  4:06pm
Denise in DC:

Thanks for the recommendation, Carmichael!
  4:06pm
kat330:

"Let Laramie take care o' me till they bury me" -- choice!
  4:12pm
Caryn:

@kat: hmm, off the top of my head, no...
  4:13pm
kat330:

Worth a shot. It was EVERYwhere, so I figured it might have won the Eurovision award -- it that even existed back then.
  4:16pm
Paul:

Daniel Harnett has the world's loveliest voice.
  4:17pm
G:

Back from chores. The Bee Gees were the Bee Gees before Bowie was the Bowies, before Madonna was the Madonnas. And also the other career proteans.
  4:18pm
Caryn:

@kat: they've had the Eurovision song contest since 1956, so yes, it definitely existed then. But in the early 70s, it was mostly French-language songs winning. And then Abba in 1974. So no, I don't think that's it.
  4:19pm
kat330:

Warm winter, cold spring. Wonder what summer will be?
  4:20pm
paula pc:

cannot thank you enough for playing the glorious Wolverton Brothers...today's show is hitting hard on all fronts I'd say...
  4:21pm
G:

@kat: Changeable as a baby's bottom.
  4:21pm
kat330:

Or a woman's moods.
  4:22pm
G:

You get to say that, I can't. O:-)
  4:23pm
Denise in DC:

No she doesn't.
  4:24pm
G:

Let's you and her fight :-P
  4:24pm
kat330:

@Caryn: I'm thinking the chocolate song was French. English lyrics, but the accent I recall of the female singer seemed French. I can clearly hear the notes of those opening 7 syllables. Whatever. Someday I'll come across the info.
  4:24pm
Parq:

But I think we can all agree that G's turn of a phrase is wonderful.
  4:25pm
kat330:

I do and I did! I recognize and embrace my changeability.
  4:25pm
Caryn:

I'm fine with women having changing moods, but that Katy Perry lyric about men changing their mind and women changing their clothes annoys the hell out of me.
  4:26pm
kat330:

@Denise: Of course that's a broadstroke stereotype, but it so happens to apply to me and many women I know is all.
  4:26pm
G:

@Parq: No APA for me here, but Joyce's dad ("Simon Dedalus") was made to say that in Joyce's _Ulysses_, near the beginning of episode 6.
  4:31pm
kat330:

Thinking on it further -- using the parts the aliens haven't already consumed -- I think moodiness is less gender based and maybe more attached to a certain sensitivity. I've known plenty of moody men, too.
  4:35pm
kat330:

Here's how changeable I am: I rescind that comment from 4:21. :)
  4:35pm
Caryn:

By rescinding it, you're proving it to be true, kat...
  4:37pm
Cheri Pi:

The Wolverton Brothers live down the street-Cincinnatay!
  4:38pm
kat330:

Yep, what I said.
  4:40pm
kat330:

@Cheri: And you're just upriver from me. JT & I launched our honeymoon (such as it was) in Cincy, Newport Aquarium, etc.
  4:46pm
Denise in DC:

I've changed my mind about the whole subject.
  4:47pm
G:

Maybe I'm confusing it with another song, but do you mean the song that goes "Hot hot hot hot chocolate, I can't get enough"? That was written by Andy Beck and Brian Fisher, title "Hot Chocolate!". If so, google points to performance youtubes, full lyrics, and sheet music. I get the impression school singing groups like to perform it. How could "Glee" have missed it so long?
  4:48pm
Caryn:

@G: yeah, but that song was written in the 2000s, so it can't be it.
  4:48pm
kat330:

@G: Maybe -- point me to it if you will? :)
  4:49pm
kat330:

Ohhh, well, then, nevermind. Talk about change-ups. :)
  4:49pm
Caryn:

It was in the movie "Polar Express". Andy Beck is known for his songs for children's musicals and is quite a young guy himself.
  4:49pm
G:

If you want to check for yourself, kat, type "andy beck hot chocolate" into google. That's what I did...
  4:52pm
kat330:

@G: Nope, not it. Wasn't a Latin beat. More a pokey, clunky 4/4 beat. Maybe I'll put what I recall in an audio file and see if someone can make a match.
  4:56pm
kat330:

There's always the possibility it was playing on European jukeboxes in the alternate Fringe universe of '74.
  4:58pm
Caryn:

The aliens have implanted that false memory in your head, kat, to cover the experiments they did on you during your time in Europe! Dammit! *shakes fist at the heavens*
  5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

...and, back.
Have to fill in the rest of that with the Archive, I'm into any YT song you play. The Closet Queen! At least I've heard her version of "Makin It" already!
  5:01pm
Carmichael:

@kat: try this link: http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/2676873/a/Chocolate+Caliente.htm
  5:01pm
Denise in DC:

Holy shit. Is this "Avenging Annie"? I haven't heard this in decades!
  5:02pm
kat330:

@Caryn: b-b-b-but I remember a copper Lady Liberty flying back into JFK, too.
  5:03pm
Denise in DC:

Irwin, you have just made my afternoon.
  5:03pm
G:

1973, Denise. Here's the album cover:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Pratt_(album)
  5:05pm
kat330:

@Carm: No, sorry, and thanks EVERYone who's looking.
  5:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

I was just about to ask if this was 70s...it sounds so 70s, it's either 70s, or a modern release by a 70s-production fetishist. Of whom there are several releasing songs now.

Great vocals on Andy!
  5:05pm
Parq:

Wait, a copper Lady Liberty flew into JFK once? Wow, that must have been something to see.
  5:06pm
Philo Gristle:

I was bombarded with dumb (D-M-U-B) euro trash of that sort throughout the 70s and though I can imagine the song, I don't know it. Boney M was probably the main offender, I can still hum those classics like "El Lute" "Daddy Cool" and "Rasputin."
  5:08pm
G:

No one with taste is gonna forget Dusty in Memphis.
  5:08pm
Doug Z:

Interesting story about the Andy Pratt cut. Would be fun to hear the pre-release "pirate tape" version. I'm sure Irwin can dig that up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avenging_Annie
  5:08pm
kat330:

@Parq: It was WILD, man, but it was '74 after all.
  5:10pm
Denise in DC:

Ah, Wikipedia. Source of All Human Knowledge. Thank you!
  5:11pm
Carmichael:

And if enough people vote for it, it's true!
  5:11pm
Caryn:

Ahh, Dusty...

On a completely unrelated note, was just stunned by an ad for one basic cable channel's May Day special, in which people need to identify the celebrity who is giving them a massage. WTH?!? I'm at a loss for words. And stuck wondering I should actually watch it just for pure trainwreck kitsch value. But then again, they're advertising it with totally unnecessary T&A and it's hosted by a guy I loathe, so I'll probably avoid it like the plague.
  5:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ah, the soothing, skilled strains of the Beatles "Sun King" and...ACH NEIN! KLAUS BEYER!!
  5:13pm
kat330:

F [hot] A [hot] D [hot] E-flat [hot] E [choc] E-flat [o] E [late]
[that's the first seven notes w/syllables. no Latinate beat]
Mmmm, sun king in any flavor, just as sweet...
  5:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Dear Lord, the entire Abbey Road medley!!! (holds lighter)
  5:13pm
Carmichael:

Speaking strictly from a chauvinist male point of view, is there really such a thing as "totally unnecessary" T&A?? <ducking and running for my life>
  5:14pm
Parq:

Thank you, Carm, for taking that hit for the team.
  5:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

BÖSE Alte Herr Senf!! WHAT is so difficult about that, Klaus??!
  5:15pm
G:

If the Beatles were known for tight harmonies, this version could get to be known for loose harmonies :-)
  5:16pm
Denise in DC:

Dammit. The Andy Pratt Wikipedia article is out of date. I feel the compulsion to edit coming over me.
  5:17pm
G:

You and tens of millions of others, Denise. Go for it, if you have your facts.
  5:17pm
Ajax:

I love Irwin's shows, they are always so so good, a perfect way to while away your Wednesdays.
  5:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: Oooh! Three-way multi-track Klaus, trying to sing "Because" auf Deutsch! "Weil"! :)
  5:17pm
Caryn:

For anyone wanting to know more about Klaus, here's the Der Spiegel article written after he finished his Beatles project: http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/0,1518,783593,00.html
  5:18pm
G:

Geil.
  5:19pm
das:

Nobody captures the true spirit of the beatles like Klaus
  5:19pm
paula pc:

Wow...his cadence on "GOLLL...Dener..." -- that's some interpretation
  5:19pm
Droll:

Tuning in Late:
Cons: Missing Lee Morgan opener
Pros: Klaus Beyer microtonal time-bending pop symphony opener
  5:20pm
john:

This is what led to an official overproduced* recording, which lacked the punch and power of the original pirate tape of 1971. (* "citation needed")
  5:20pm
G:

If only Klaus Nomi were still with us, we could anticiapte a _Klaus und Klaus_ album.
  5:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Danke sehr, Caryn!
Good story on Klaus. And to his credit, he made a good editorial decision to record "When I'm Sixty-Four" as "Wenn ich siebzig bin".
  5:20pm
autumn:

play claire. cats like claire.
  5:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wenn ich - sieb-zig - bin
Wenn ich - vier-und-sech-zig - bin
  5:22pm
Caryn:

@Carm: well, when the ad also has the openly gay host trying desperately to be all frat boy and go "dude, look at those boobs", the T&A is not the least bit titillating (no pun intended), but just awkward.
  5:23pm
kat330:

And in the end....
  5:24pm
autumn:

play "delee turkie"
  5:24pm
G:

There was only a Schluß, no Ihre Majestät. Oh, the deprivation!
  5:25pm
Caryn:

@Matt: true, although sechzig would've worked fine, and then he would've been rounding to the nearest ten. But then again, siebzig has the matching vowel sounds, so nice choice.

Parq:

Caryn, could you have misheard him? Might he have said, "look at those dudes' tubes"?
  5:25pm
Irwin:

@utumn: Delee turkee is our next special platter!
  5:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: That would like the 7SD version of a reality show -- people try to get excited over a sexuality different from their own. Ideally they would also win a sum so small, "it's more than they expected, but less than they imagined"! :)
  5:27pm
Caryn:

@Parq: different language, so no. Also, he's doing most of the leering while there's a scantily-clad chick in lurex hot pants lying on a massage table in front of him, so no on that count too.

mchuge:

Thanks for the Tipsy! I saw them in the basement of CBGBs for CMJ when their second rekkid came out with maybe 10 other people.
  5:28pm
Our Station Manager:

"HEY! You wanna fake a sexual reaction for 40 BUCKS???!!"
  5:29pm
Caryn:

@Matt: heh! I'm still debating whether 40 bucks falls into that category...
  5:29pm
Corner Hooker:

I don't work that cheap, creep.
  5:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: It was more than I expected (because Danne's mentions of winning 25 bucks years ago), but anything two-digits would surely be less than I imagined for a "big prize"...
  5:32pm
Caryn:

@Matt: yeah, see, to me the money was less than I imagined, but I keep wondering if I expected more or not. It's difficult, because you can't go back to your before-the-reveal state. Well, without some help from those aliens...
  5:33pm
S.Smith:

Is that background music Cornershop?
  5:33pm
Caryn:

If you want to buy Klaus' stuff, go to his website (the left-hand side links): http://klaus-beyer.de/index.html

Interesting "An American in Paris" bits in there...
  5:43pm
Denise in DC:

There! Did a teeny bit of updating.
  5:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: You would be downgraded to "Kinskyphobia", if you're only afraid of Klaus Kinsky.
  5:44pm
Carmichael:

I'm deathfully afraid of Nastassia Kinski, but Klaus is AOK.
  5:46pm
Denise in DC:

Oh, please note: on his current website, Andy Pratt announces, "I come cheap and I travel."
  5:49pm
Matt from Springfield:
