Carmichael:

I'm way early, because I just heard Scott Williams say you're playing a Happy the Man concert. I'm a Happy Man! See you tomorrow, Tony!
Avatar 11:10am
tonyc:

Hiya, Carmichael -- you are early. Hope you had a sleeping bag with you....
Avatar 11:37am
tonyc:

As some of you know already, today's show is the first of a new series I'm calling "Tape Hiss." The new program will air on alternate Tuesdays (alternating with my regular show). It won't really be a freeform show, 'cause I'll be playing whole recordings -- unreleased concerts and demos. This is all still sort of in the experimental phase -- I haven't decided yet, for example, how lo the fi should go, or whether I should break up longer recordings into separate chunks or just play them straight through. (Let me know what you think.) Musical styles and sound quality will vary quite a bit from show to show: today is lo-ish on the fi, and hi on the progginess. Shows will not be archived, so you'll have to catch 'em in real time or not at all.

Wendy del Formaggio:

Oh wow, I'm early! I'll just take a seat over here...

Nice Mike Cooper track playing on the stream leading into your show Tony!
Avatar 11:55am
tonyc:

Thanks, Texas Scott! Had some technical difficulties, due to unfamiliar equipment and severe sleep deprivation -- glad it sounded OK nonetheless.
Avatar 11:56am
tonyc:

Hey Doug! Do I have you to thank for the Mike Cooper -- or just the gods of fate?
  11:57am
Doug S.:

Mostly the gods of fate. That plus the fact that I adore Mike Cooper and put a ton of his stuff on the stream...

Swooping in from the Mother Ship - hello Tony, Doug, all you Hisseners

OK <yawn>, out of the sleeping bag and ready to face the big ol' proggy world.
Avatar 12:02pm

Hiya, Van!

I've always felt the funniest written word in English to be "debuting."

Nevertheless the Hissing of Summer Tapes is now DEBUTING!

@Happy the Listener: Somebody had to do it!

gratefulblac:

great concept for a radio show, reminds of Van der graaf/genesis shows for the bbc in early 1970s!
Avatar 12:11pm
tonyc:

Is it just me, or does this track sound like Gary Numan's "Cars"?
  12:12pm
Dumbo the Clown:

Are we having fun yet?!
  12:12pm
Van in DC:

Hey can I make a request on this show?

* ducking *
  12:16pm
Carmichael:

If this is '76, then this must be Kit Watkins, Stanley Whitaker on guitar and vocals, and Rick Kenner on bass. They also had nearly as many drummers as Spinal Tap.
Avatar 12:16pm
tonyc:

Van: Ha!

Gratefulblac: Glad you approve!
Avatar 12:17pm
tonyc:

Carmichael: The full concert coming up is from '76. Stuff on now is from even earlier.
Avatar 12:21pm
tonyc:

Coming up a next: a complete 90-minute concert -- get your popcorn and drinks now.
  12:21pm
Van in DC:

Gonna have to miss some hiss to go grab some lunchtime bliss. Every other Tuesday we have the "Feelin' Crabby?" roach coach outside L'Enfant Plaza. Wonderful Maryland crab sammiches :)

Bluebottle voice: 'Ah he's fallen in the water'.

Tony,
you're not the best one who does what you do, you're the only one who does what you do!

i dig the longer-form ones in their original length. really enjoying this show. but play and split as best fits your format. you the boss!
Avatar 1:14pm
tonyc:

Thanks, James! So, just to recap, next week I'll be back with a regular freeform show. The week following will be another "Tape Hiss" program -- most likely featuring something completely different style-wise than what's on today.
  1:17pm
Van in DC:

I'm surprised I was able to make a path from Happy the Man to Kate Bush in only 6 steps. ;)

Avatar 1:22pm
tonyc:

Interesting! My favorite Happy the Man factoid is that they turned down Peter Gabriel when he asked them to be his new band post-Genesis. (Not because they didn't like him, but because they figured he would overshadow them and make them into a backing band.)
  1:25pm
Van in DC:

Wow. Kind of worked out for Gabriel I guess :) Of course, HAD they joined up, then that link to Kate would be PRETTY short ha ha
  1:28pm
Carmichael:

I had heard about that. The official explanation was "it didn't work out, for a variety of resaons." Always wanted to know the real story.
  1:29pm
gratefulblac:

would they have been happy backing a man prancing round the stage dressed up as a lawnmower and a cabbage!
Avatar 1:30pm
tonyc:

Maybe if he was a lawnmower and a cabbage simultaneously....
  1:35pm
Van in DC:

Have always loved Gabriel. Especially the duets with KaTe ;)
  1:35pm
gratefulblac:

Did AMON DUUL II do any radio in US in the 70s like they did at the Beeb in the UK?
Avatar 1:36pm
tonyc:

Gratefulblac: Don't think so....
Avatar 1:38pm
tonyc:

By the way, if anybody has any material they think would fit on "Tape Hiss," do get in touch.
  1:39pm
gratefulblac:

Anyway this has been a great show, a bit like Hatfield and the North, National Health etc.
Avatar 1:41pm
tonyc:

Gratefulblac: Definitely some similarities to those bands.
  1:43pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I had no idea this hissy tape show would have comments and live playlisting.
I must say, I don't hear much hiss, nor is there flutter, but there is WOW.
Avatar 1:45pm
tonyc:

Hola, Senor Montalban! Yeah, Doug already complained there isn't enough hiss. I'll be sure to bring my hiss-maker next time (kind of like the audio equivalent of a fog machine).
  1:46pm
Carmichael:

A connection can be made from Hatfield to Caravan to Camel to Happy the Man. I just can't remember what it is.
  1:46pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Sorry I missed your live outing last night. I did listen from over there (points over there) from time to time though.
  1:47pm
Van in DC:

Rats. I've just realized that Chelsea @ Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League is today. Like in an HOUR. And me stuck at work.
Avatar 1:49pm
tonyc:

Senor Montalban: No problemo. Probably easier to hear over the radio than live anyhow.
  1:49pm
Van in DC:

Carm, Richard Sinclair?

thanks, Tony! Was a fun show!
Adios!
  1:54pm

Yes Van, it could be either of the Sinclair cousins. Or Pete Bardens, or Ton Scherpenzeel, or ....
  1:55pm
Carmichael:

Ya thanks Tony! I can tell the grandkids that I was aboard for the maiden voyage!
Avatar 1:55pm
tonyc:

Thanks for listening everybody! Will be back next week with a hiss-free show.
