I may as well invite the whole bunch to a party and spike the punch with sodium pentathol. That would work out well, I'm sure.

	3:23pm Mike East: I never had a Facebook and I never will. If 1 in 8 people in the world are on Facebook, that means I'm still in the majority, right?
	3:25pm kat330: @Mike: I'll remain off FB even when it tips into the minority. Too much like high school, a time I couldn't wait to end.
	3:25pm G: I chose G (my first initial) when I started commenting here maybe 2008ish. Again, I was worried that if I said enough over time, either here, or about FMU to people I know, I would end up being very spottable. A single letter is also hard to search for, because it's not very distinctive in the ever-accumulating midden of e-data. . :-) Several years of pseudonymous livejournaling in the early 00s meant I had thought this through long before FB or FMU comments. And I'd seen messy situations where people were cavalier about what they said online, forever archived, that could and did cause them trouble later on... A lot of my professional connections were built online in the 90s, so I saw how things really went fairly early on in the WWW era...

I don't like it particularly (though there are a couple of brands that are less bitter and which I'm fine with), it's like Danish "salty licorice". Just yesterday, I read some news story about FB users by country. Apparently, 86 % of Swedish people have a FB account.

	4:10pm Denise in DC: I've lost a lot of vinyl over the years meself, but still have a good-sized collection. Was trying to digitize it using one of those DIY turntable contraptions, but the sound turned out lousy. And when you're trying to capture the full experience of a tap-dancing Liberace, that's a problem.
	4:11pm Dagwood: Vinyl Alert! to FMU friends. I just visited a nice man in Beacon NY who is trying to unload 100's of records, before he moves to Ecuador in two days. FREE. Mostly classical but all tastes mixed in. See ad in Hudson Valley Craigslist under "Free" for location.

	4:21pm Droll: I've been digitizing my old cassettes and MiniDiscs and throwing away boxes and boxes old plasticware (long overdue). I started going through my LPs to do the same, but there was a sense of attachment to the LPs I don't get with CD, MD, or CS, so I kept them. I also realized a lifetime of buying "obscure" LPs eventually turns into a collection of "Rarities".
	4:21pm Denise in DC: @Kat, the reclaimmedia site mentions one of the problems I encountered myself while trying to digitize my vinyl: unless you sit and nurse the process yourself (or, apparently, buy some special software), each side of a vinyl LP ends up as one long MP3 track. It's a pain in the ass.
	4:23pm kat330: @fred: Related to Thomas Alva I presume? @Caryn: No, I don't think so. I doubt his family gave him the opportunity since he complained in email about how much he was being forcefed by his stepmom. :)
	4:24pm rrg: @kat330: When I did it they sent boxes with more than enough padding to make breakage unlikely. I think now they just advise taking your records to UPS, who really will pack it very well (it's their business, after all). Though it's impossible to guarantee anything like this, I wasn't too worried. They'll do audio cassettes as well if you have them (but not 78s).
	4:24pm rareASS avis (left coast): @Denise in DC - you're so correct. i digitize lots of vinyl, and it's painstaking and requires a lot of attention to detail (noise reduction process mostly - especially for really badly thrashed records).

	4:27pm rrg: Reclaimmedia will give you regular CDs (i.e. lossless) as well, if you want that (which I do). Getting both mp3s and full CDs costs only a little more. They scan the cover art, and everything is properly tagged.

A couple in their 80s go to the doctor and sit in a crowded waiting room. The wife gets called first. The doctor examines her and says cheerfully, "You're in great shape! Would you mind telling me: Do you still have intercourse?" She looks a little confused, then gets up and walks out of the examining room, and calls down the hall: "HARRY! DO WE STILL HAVE INTERCOURSE???" He yells back from the waiting room: "IF I'VE TOLD YOU ONCE, I'VE TOLD YOU A THOUSAND TIMES! WE. HAVE. BLUE. CROSS."

But "space odyssey" was not a well known phrase prior to the movie, so the most likely guess, without more solid evidence at present, would be an ambitious songwriter might have decided to play off something that had made a splash. Wikipedia says Phillips, the label Bowie had after Deram, didn't want to release it on the grounds of being gimmicky, but then went ahead, smelling the lure of the moon landing tie-in. The single was released during the first moon landing mission.

But you have to use some kind of name to have an account, and people do ask you to be on there to see this and that... I just don't get why I would want my relatives and friends and colleagues etc. to all know all about each other. What's the upside on that. I may as well invite the whole bunch to a party and spike the punch with sodium pentathol. That would work out well, I'm sure.

	3:23pm Mike East: I never had a Facebook and I never will. If 1 in 8 people in the world are on Facebook, that means I'm still in the majority, right?
	3:25pm kat330: @Mike: I'll remain off FB even when it tips into the minority. Too much like high school, a time I couldn't wait to end.
	3:25pm G: I chose G (my first initial) when I started commenting here maybe 2008ish. Again, I was worried that if I said enough over time, either here, or about FMU to people I know, I would end up being very spottable. A single letter is also hard to search for, because it's not very distinctive in the ever-accumulating midden of e-data. . :-) Several years of pseudonymous livejournaling in the early 00s meant I had thought this through long before FB or FMU comments. And I'd seen messy situations where people were cavalier about what they said online, forever archived, that could and did cause them trouble later on... A lot of my professional connections were built online in the 90s, so I saw how things really went fairly early on in the WWW era...

I don't like it particularly (though there are a couple of brands that are less bitter and which I'm fine with), it's like Danish "salty licorice". Just yesterday, I read some news story about FB users by country. Apparently, 86 % of Swedish people have a FB account.

	4:10pm Denise in DC: I've lost a lot of vinyl over the years meself, but still have a good-sized collection. Was trying to digitize it using one of those DIY turntable contraptions, but the sound turned out lousy. And when you're trying to capture the full experience of a tap-dancing Liberace, that's a problem.
	4:11pm Dagwood: Vinyl Alert! to FMU friends. I just visited a nice man in Beacon NY who is trying to unload 100's of records, before he moves to Ecuador in two days. FREE. Mostly classical but all tastes mixed in. See ad in Hudson Valley Craigslist under "Free" for location.

	4:21pm Droll: I've been digitizing my old cassettes and MiniDiscs and throwing away boxes and boxes old plasticware (long overdue). I started going through my LPs to do the same, but there was a sense of attachment to the LPs I don't get with CD, MD, or CS, so I kept them. I also realized a lifetime of buying "obscure" LPs eventually turns into a collection of "Rarities".
	4:21pm Denise in DC: @Kat, the reclaimmedia site mentions one of the problems I encountered myself while trying to digitize my vinyl: unless you sit and nurse the process yourself (or, apparently, buy some special software), each side of a vinyl LP ends up as one long MP3 track. It's a pain in the ass.
	4:23pm kat330: @fred: Related to Thomas Alva I presume? @Caryn: No, I don't think so. I doubt his family gave him the opportunity since he complained in email about how much he was being forcefed by his stepmom. :)
	4:24pm rrg: @kat330: When I did it they sent boxes with more than enough padding to make breakage unlikely. I think now they just advise taking your records to UPS, who really will pack it very well (it's their business, after all). Though it's impossible to guarantee anything like this, I wasn't too worried. They'll do audio cassettes as well if you have them (but not 78s).
	4:24pm rareASS avis (left coast): @Denise in DC - you're so correct. i digitize lots of vinyl, and it's painstaking and requires a lot of attention to detail (noise reduction process mostly - especially for really badly thrashed records).

	4:27pm rrg: Reclaimmedia will give you regular CDs (i.e. lossless) as well, if you want that (which I do). Getting both mp3s and full CDs costs only a little more. They scan the cover art, and everything is properly tagged.

A couple in their 80s go to the doctor and sit in a crowded waiting room. The wife gets called first. The doctor examines her and says cheerfully, "You're in great shape! Would you mind telling me: Do you still have intercourse?" She looks a little confused, then gets up and walks out of the examining room, and calls down the hall: "HARRY! DO WE STILL HAVE INTERCOURSE???" He yells back from the waiting room: "IF I'VE TOLD YOU ONCE, I'VE TOLD YOU A THOUSAND TIMES! WE. HAVE. BLUE. CROSS."

But "space odyssey" was not a well known phrase prior to the movie, so the most likely guess, without more solid evidence at present, would be an ambitious songwriter might have decided to play off something that had made a splash. Wikipedia says Phillips, the label Bowie had after Deram, didn't want to release it on the grounds of being gimmicky, but then went ahead, smelling the lure of the moon landing tie-in. The single was released during the first moon landing mission.
