Favoriting July 18, 2012: Raymond Chandler, born July 23, 1888

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

(Philip Marlowe enters his office:)
"The smell of old dust hung in the air as flat and stale as a football interview. I opened the inner door and inside was the same dead air, the same dust along the veneer, the same broken promise of a life of ease. I opened the windows and turned on the radio. It came up too loud and when I had it tuned down to normal the phone sounded as if it had been ringing for some time. I took my hat off it and lifted the receiver."

  — Raymond Chandler, The Little Sister (1949)

Listener comments!

  3:00pm
Carmichael:

OK, got here right at the top of the hour for once. Hiya Irwin.
  3:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Irwin, you remembered to play "Yes I Can, No You Can't" as the theme. Good, you passed the first part of today's sobriety test. Now, when you talk on mic, that will be the real test...
  3:03pm
duke:

was irwin drinking with duane? I missed the martini show because of a meeting which would have been much improved had there been martinis.
  3:04pm
17 0z.'er:

Irwin drinks only Mr. Pibb.
  3:04pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I was at the library recently and read a biography about John Coltrane. In there, it mentioned Lee Morgan and I thought "That name is familiar. He's the guy from Irwin's theme song."
  3:05pm
Caryn:

It's fun that Chandler was a British citizen for the vast majority of his life, including his productive writing years. You tend to think of his detective works as quintessentially American.
  3:05pm
Donn:

I loved Lee Morgan in Paint Your Wagon.
  3:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Carm! In fact this might be a FIRST first for you here! Congrats!
  3:06pm
Irwin:

Chandler was born in the U.S.
  3:15pm
Laura L:

And poor Chandler had a rough time with alcohol...
  3:15pm
Michael:

Ever see Altman's "The Long Goodbye"? Underrated take on Marlowe I think.
  3:16pm
still b/p:

Chandler worked with Billy Wilder on Double Indemnity, and Wilder was very much one of those interesting creatives born and raised somewhere else but whose fuel and forte seemed to be the most American of American elements. No martinis here...reduced to teetotalin' with total trivia.
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Red stripe pink? Paper feed is probably running low. Needs to be refilled.
  3:21pm
Sean Daily:

Chandler also didn't publish his first detective story until he was 45. Keep that in mind, late bloomers.
  3:22pm
common:

I agree with the employee, Irwin.
  3:22pm
βrian:

That's why they call it a counter. You put your money there to count it.
  3:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Well that's good to know, if you lose some money at Dunkin' Donuts, you know it will be there when you get back--they won't bother to lift it up and take it unless you hand it right to them

...and OH! There's a twist! You crazy M. Night Chusid, you!
  3:25pm
Mark in DC:

I agree with the "just an employee"(?) too. On the counter in pennies did you say? Bush league. Good taste doesn't give you class.
  3:28pm
βrian:

In some places it's considered unseemly to hand money directly to someone during a business transaction.
  3:28pm
βrian:

Now, if you tossed it on the floor, on the other hand ...
  3:30pm
duke:

I don't like Dunkin' Donuts coffee. If you ask for milk in it, they always put way too much in. In RI you can't throw a rock without hitting a Dunkin Donuts
  3:32pm
Michael:

Hey Irwin - you involved with this at all?
The Harry Partch Legacy: Microtonal Constructions and Intercultural Dialogues
A Symposium and Festival
September 19–21, 2012

Our agency got an email from the Music Chair looking for funding.
  3:33pm
Droll:

βrian, Not just unseemly, but illegal depending on the nature of the business. And now they're closing HSBC on me, it gets tougher every day I tell ya.
  3:33pm
Irwin:

Not involved but would love to attend.
  3:33pm
common:

everything direction given in RI is: It's by the Dunkin Donuts. I agree, Duke.
  3:34pm
common:

everything direction given...nice. Heat.
  3:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Chicks on Speed!
  3:45pm
Michael:

Yeah it looks quite interesting - wish we could fund it somehow. Couldn't figure out from the email or website if there are performances apart from lectures or presentations.
  3:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

A Pastoral Moondog indeed. Hmm, that would be a good name for an American microbrew beer. It's hot out, need to crack me open a Pastoral Moondog Summer Brew.
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yay, "Broadcasts from the Nether-World with Irwin", on WFMU!
  3:55pm
Update:

Raining hard in Manhattan.
  3:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Brian Dewan!! Ha HA, not surprised a song like this comes from the mind of Mr. Dewan!
  3:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Is this to the tune of something Stephen Foster, or other old school Americana song?
  3:57pm
Mike East:

huge bolts of lightening right outside the window.
  3:58pm
McKay:

I like this old-school Tampa Bay Buccaneer orange motif. Bringing back memories of LeRoy Selmon and Vinny Testaverde.
  3:59pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

http://www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress/live-camera.html shows evil-looking clouds, but no rain.
  4:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

<Sending out psychic applause to the volunteers!>
  4:01pm
Ike:

No rain? Feh! I'm on the UES and we're getting soaked.
  4:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

The electric orange of the original Bucs--what a color for football!
This particular shade is called, of course: "east orange".
  4:03pm
Update:

Strong precipitation in the Flatrion District. Thunderclaps. Strobe-like flashes of lightning. A Plymouth Savoy careening on two-wheels through a crowded intersection.
  4:03pm
Droll:

Ken, Thanks -- that is cool/menacing looking. Straight out of Ghostbusters.
  4:04pm
das:

That Joy Poppers tune was cool, whats the story on those guys?
  4:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Traffic cams around here showing some rain starting north of me, right now it's starting to get heavily cloudy outside.
  4:04pm
Carmichael:

Rufus is a little stranger than his dad, it seems to me. Just fine with me, too.
  4:05pm
Van Dyke:

That Want One LP was great. Go Or Go Ahead is pretty stunning.
  4:07pm
Mike East:

its been so long since I heard this Morrissey. Brings back good memories. Thanks, Irwin.
  4:07pm
Old Lady:

Where's the beef?
  4:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Zwerg, German for "dwarf".
Never heard of that word before, I was thinking of "Zweig" (branch), and "Zwiebel" (onion) when I saw it.
  4:08pm
Irwin:

@das: Joy Poppers is/are one guy: Tom Szidon
  4:09pm
Carmichael:

He he ... I was thinking of Morrissey during that Joy Poppers song. He's still got it.
  4:10pm
Knight:

Wasn't that a Billy Corgan band? Zwerg?
  4:10pm
das:

Thanks!
  4:11pm
das:

@Knight, I think that was Zwerg Hole
  4:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, another DJ Keilidh one! I was wondering just what this was. Nice and ethereal mix, great job Keili!!
  4:19pm
Rare Avis:

Nice Keilidh! Thank you.
  4:20pm
Carmichael:

Zwerg is a Canadian pretty-boy named Eldon Thiele. Go to www.zwerg.ca for more info. Lots of pics of him staring earnestly and forlornly into the camera.
  4:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Go Lane!! And, Go Mellotrons!!
  4:29pm
Alison Porchnik:

It's pronounced "zverg" and it means gnome in German.
  4:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Gotta know where to slash, and know where to burn.
And that's just for the material that's already good...
  4:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Exciting guest, better start making yourselves up now for his appearance, radio audience! *takes out compact and immediately starts prettying up for the radio interview in a few weeks*
  4:38pm
Alison Porchnik:

Ok, here comes the political-rant-disguised-as-playlist.
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

More insulting anti-government satire! Y'know, the worker who normally puts a *tree* in the hole is sick today, but that doesn't mean we're going to stop doing our jobs of digging and filling in the holes!
  4:39pm
Irwin:

@Alison: did you hang anyone today?
  4:40pm
BK:

Thanks for playing The Rainmakers, and one of the best on their first album.
  4:41pm
Curly:

The day ain't over yet ....
  4:48pm
?:

@Irwin - No. Today I merely reconsidered my entire assessment of the case thus far. We'll get to the hanging tomorrow.
  4:49pm
Alison Porchnik:

In case you weren't sure, I am also known as "?"
  4:50pm
Irwin:

Justice will be served. Preferably with a side of slaw.
  4:51pm
Alison Porchnik:

I also want fries with that.
  4:53pm
Irwin:

Fries are off today. How about an order of Spam? If not Spam, maybe a platter of malware?
  4:54pm
Philo Gristle:

Just Ice Cream Desserts, thanks.

Thundering here, no rain yet. Loved the first two Rainmakers albums when they came out...
  4:57pm
Alison Porchnik:

No fries? Jesus. And you call yourself a court of law? What about onion rings?
  4:58pm
Alison Porchnik:

Wow, this is so late 60's British pop.
  5:00pm
Carmichael:

Marmalade Souls sounded like the One-Ders.
  5:03pm
efd:

dammit, I had my speakers too low at work and between that and the thunder all I heard was "...he's got funk in his name." But thanks for the mention (I think!) nonetheless!
  5:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

I listen to WFMU for the weather. Not that it's MY weather, I just like hearing my fav DJs read NWS reports over the Air.
  5:04pm
Laura L:

No, we don't listen to FMU for weather and traffic, Irwin, 'cause Kenny G isn't on anymore.
  5:05pm
?:

I like this vintage-ish Britpoppy jag you're on.
  5:06pm
Alison Porchnik:

That was me again, commenting as my mysterious alter ego.
  5:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

Kenny G reading OLD, out of city weather and traffic! Even more amazing!

I think it would be cool if WFMU owned an AM station as well, they could play the typical news, sports and talk of drivetime AM, but in a funny, almost satirical kind of way to the form.
  5:06pm
das:

that song nearly made me poke out my left eardrum with an unfurled paperclip
  5:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Youth Lagoon! Love them!
Wish I could see them and a whole bunch of other great acts at the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago last week.
  5:09pm
Alison Porchnik:

@Matt - what you're describing is all-Irwin, all the time.
  5:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Alison: Why you're right! That in itself would be great :)
Although I was imagining our WFMU DJs (or others like them) hosting morning zoo shows, news/commentary with updates, call-in sports shows, but in a fun, postmodern spirit. Unlike the commercial counterparts.
  5:14pm
Clubfoot:

facepalm
  5:14pm
Alison Porchnik:

Thank you for playing Freddie.
  5:14pm
other david:

And Ken could have a weekly show dedicated to boilers!

Evenin' all!
  5:15pm
Carmichael:

Here comes the over-processed, multi-layered wall-of-Lynne sound. Armchair Theater is actually a pretty damn good, though spotty, CD. And Now You're Gone is an amazing piece of Harrison music.
  5:16pm
Droll:

. o O ( Nobody can see me cringing at the concept of a morning WFMZoo. I would hope Ken would burn the station down before that plan hatched )
  5:16pm
Mike East:

I just got an ELO record a few weeks ago. One thing that perplexes me is why Jeff Lynne has to use the "robot voice" on every song. He's got such a good voice, its not like he needs to be auto tuned or anything. Don't get me wrong it sounds awesome on some tracks, but I don't know if he needs it on every song.
  5:17pm
Irwin:

Today: Greg Hagerty (former WFMU DJ), R.I.P. Great guy. Sorry to hear. http://tinyurl.com/GH-obit
  5:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Evening OD!
Yep, that's the spirit! *sips martini from earlier*
  5:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: That's sad :(
Are there any Archives of Greg H., or was he on before that era?
  5:20pm
Droll:

Mike East, Lynne also uses the same dry and squashed drum sound everywhere, that's more his signature sound than vocoder. It's even on the WIlburys record (vocoder is not, but Dylan could use it)
  5:22pm
Alison Porchnik:

Kinks. Yay! So much more interesting (and better) than The Beatles, IMHO.
  5:23pm
Mike East:

@Droll - hahaha - dylan could use it. Why has that never happened? I'd like to hear Dylan doing Neil Young's Trans.
  5:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Dash of Ray for a Spark of Wit!
@Mike/Droll: Don't know why Jeff sang increasingly processed by the end of the 70s, maybe he wanted to take his rock in a more dance music direction.
  5:24pm
Carmichael:

TOM! Listen and learn, Jeff!
  5:25pm
Alison Porchnik:

Oh God, now Tom Jones? You're killing me with kindness, Irwin.
  5:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

On an XM channel last night, they played Neil Young's "Computer Age", from Trans. But they didn't show the artist/song info on the display; that happens occasionally, I think that is caused by errors in their own database or something. But that's funny, because while I knew exactly what it was, listeners who don't know about Trans will be out of luck! No easy way to look up that song by listening to lyrics!
  5:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Yes! All strong voice, no processing needed or desired!
  5:28pm
Caryn:

I remember once hearing the recordings Dylan did when he stopped smoking for a while, and his voice was completely different. Dare I say smooth.
  5:28pm
Ike:

Irwin is tired of arguing? Does that mean it's the apocalypse?
  5:32pm
Irwin:

Yes, Ike, the end times are nigh.
  5:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah Sam! 92!

Ahhhh, I've heard these Drum Fairy Tales before! So THIS is the guy!
  5:34pm
Carmichael:

Does a musical interpretation of a Raymond Chandler monologue exist? Maybe Mickey Rourke riffing off of a Rob Wasserman bass line? Just thinking out loud ...
  5:35pm
Droll:

. o O ( Yes, THIS is how recorded drums should sound. Take note, Jeff. )
  5:36pm
Ace from Al Ain:

Hey Matt--safely landed in SPFLD
  5:37pm
Irwin:

@Carm: Got just the thing.
  5:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

W00t!!!!!!! Drum's Fairy Tales!!
  5:38pm
Philo Gristle:

There's John Zorn's Spillane, but not really the same thing....
  5:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Well hello Ace! Welcome back!
I didn't realize there was an airport in Springfield to land at though...(looks outside) oh, wow......
  5:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Robyn Hitchcock tribute to Raymond Chandler! Bringing it all back together.
  5:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Also, I didn't realize Freddie Mercury's song "Goin' Back" was a Goffin/King composition until you said it. Apparently made famous by Dusty Springfield in '66. Love the lyric "Live the days instead of counting the years".
  5:50pm
other david:

Dusty's version is peerless.

Although I think most people in Ireland know it because of this 80's advert:

trust me to link to a video with no sound..

Matt from Springfield:

Thanks OD!
And this "Antarctica" song, I know this, and like this!
  5:58pm
Copy Editor:

Like the dude above, s.b. AntarCtica in playlist titles.
  6:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Good catch, Copy Editor! CORRECT, Irwin!

Also, thanks Irwin! Great show, happy vibes!
