Listener comments!

  12:00pm
Carmichael:

Hi Amanda, after two weeks away on vacation and a birthday to boot, I'm all ears. Well, MOSTLY ears ...
  12:01pm
northguineahills:

Happy post-bday delirium, Carmichael.
  12:02pm
listener james from westwood:

happy belated birthday, carmichael!
welcome back, amanda, and howdy all!
  12:02pm
john:

woooooooooooooot!
  12:03pm
Carmichael:

THanks NGH, delirium isn't the descriptive I used. More like "depression". Or "resignation" ...
  12:06pm
North Fork:

Yay Amanda.
  12:07pm
northguineahills:

I have to admit I haven't felt too much different about my last 14 bdays (although hangovers get slowly more annoying), but I only do shindigs for my odd year bdays any more.
  12:09pm
Doug S.:

Happy birthday to Carmichael. Happy Amanda Day to all!
  12:10pm
northguineahills:

Today's Google doodle is for Julia Child's 100th. Purty damn awesome. Might dig out a few of her LPs (I have cooking LPs and children's stories narrated by her).
  12:11pm
kat330:

Happy Birthday, dear Carmie, happy birthday to you!
Ooops, getting interrupted by stream?
  12:11pm
Doug S.:

Lot of rebuffering of the stream over here. Is anyone else having problems?

Hey Carmichael, and HB! Hope this satisfies all your b'day wishes. Big greetings to northguibneahills, North Fork, lJfW, john, and Doug... get into it...
  12:12pm
kat330:

Hi, Amanda and Doug, ngh and LJfW and John. Oh, and North Fork!
  12:14pm
Carmichael:

Is the stream down?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Amanda:

Whoa, I was that anonymous person back there. Sorey. Hi kat330!
  12:15pm
Carmichael:

OK, got it back. Strange ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Amanda:

The stream looks fine from my end. Is anyone else having trouble?
  12:15pm
kat330:

It was interrupted a couple of time when I was singing your birthday song up there, but it's cooperating fine for me now.
  12:16pm
Carmichael:

Thanks for the Bday wishes, everyone.
  12:16pm
Doug S.:

When the stream rebuffering is too frequent, it knocks Amanda off momentarily and reverts back to the stream's pre-programmed queue of tracks. That happened a coupla times during the Lucky Pierre track, but all's been cool since Jonathan Richman kicked in.
  12:17pm
kat330:

Richman always brings back the cool.
  12:18pm
listener james from westwood:

the modern lovers are noted for their tech-support powers.
  12:20pm
kat330:

This is a bittersweet Scenario today....
  12:22pm
SteveL:

Back from vacation, back to live listening. I'll take the hiccups! Its what makes real radio great.
  12:23pm
northguineahills:

I need to vary my diet, I'm starting to smell like Mexican food. Back to chilled soba.
  12:24pm
kat330:

Speaking of real radio, it's always a hoot for me whenever I post a comment exactly at 12:20. That was my dad's station's frequency. Still is but under new ownership now.
  12:24pm
northguineahills:

Nice segue, Amanda!
  12:27pm
kat330:

Always wondered about this song. I'm guessing he wants a cynical girl on the outside, but a hopeless romantic on the inside. :)
  12:27pm
Carmichael:

I'm hearing They Might Be Giants as a good next song.
  12:33pm
kat330:

A Tootsie Pop girl: Hard on the outside, gooey in the center.
  12:36pm
listener james from westwood:

i can't count to three without thinking of the old tootsie pop ad where the owl counts the licks needed to get to the core of a pop.
  12:38pm
kat330:

Probably less needed on a Tootsie Pop girl.
  12:40pm
kat330:

Ooooh, sound of a motorcycle....a surprise, Philo's home at his lunch hour! [ttys]
  12:41pm
northguineahills:

There can never be too much Dinosaur Jr.!
  12:44pm
Carmichael:

This is the most melodic I've ever heard Mr. Jr. He's usually a screeching ball of metallic noise.
  12:53pm
kat330:

Back. Hm, if the Donner Party had had Frogs and Mice to eat....

Speaking of the Frogs: I so thank FMU for introducing me to them. I've like everything I've heard. From a distance, All This Grey sounded at first a bit like George Harrison.
Can anyone recommend a solid Frogs LP to purchase as a start?
  12:55pm
Brian in UK:

Is that the time. Hello Amanda & listener chums. Pertikulerly the west coast correspondent. How was Lake Tahoe, Mr C? Scintillating Scotoma day today.
  12:59pm
Brian in UK:

Leeora puts me in mind of Leona in James Baldwin's Another Country which I have started reading for the first time just now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Amanda:

Hi Brian in UK! Welcome back!

@kat330, you can try My Daughter the Broad as a gateway to everything Frogs. That was the one I first heard.
  1:00pm
Carmichael:

Hello, Brian. Tahoe was brilliant, quiet and icy cold. Spencer's first foray into the wilderness. He claims it will be his last. Thanks for asking.
  1:00pm
kat330:

Thanks, Amanda!

@Brian: Scotoma?
  1:03pm
listener james from westwood:

i've dreamed of las vegas 3 times in the past 2 weeks. maybe i should set my sights instead on tahoe. brilliant, quiet, and icy cold sounds just about right. glad it went nicely.
  1:03pm
Brian in UK:

@kat Visually impairing migraine. Great name eh!!
  1:04pm
kat330:

Nice bass line on this cover.
  1:05pm
kat330:

Oh, yikes, so sorry to hear that, Brian. :{ And here I was thinking it was some sort of region in the UK -- in or near Scotland.
  1:08pm
Brian in UK:

Specialist says it is too much activity at the brain stem. That's a first for me. Or was it the brian stem!!! Good band name perchance.
  1:09pm
kat330:

Adorable. :)

[The K-class and band name]
  1:10pm
northguineahills:

Jeese, I've never been diagnosed w/ such, but I've had visually impaired migraines in the past, but thankfully it's been two years since I've had one (which coincided when I was working long hours).
  1:13pm
kat330:

Yep, Amanda, my point about a bittersweet Scenario today.
  1:14pm
listener james from westwood:

outstanding news on mike lupica stepping in!
  1:16pm
kat330:

Wow, a quick AMZ check -- is it really possible that the Frogs LP is $44?! Is My Daughter the Broad at least a double LP? Or is it merely cashing in on tragedy? :[
  1:19pm
Brian in UK:

@ngh It is accepted that these can be brought on by STRESS. Whatever that is. Used to be called poverty now it is inverted.
Think I need a beer after all that info share.
  1:20pm
Brian in UK:

The eyes have it.
  1:21pm
kat330:

Yes, I was just thinking that closed eyes are probably a good remedy for a migraine. Cheers [ clinking my coffee cup to your beer ] , Brian!
  1:24pm
northguineahills:

Wow, never heard that Terry Riley, good pick, Amanda.

@Brian: Well, now I have a different type of stress which is the exact opposite of what my stressor used to be, as you well know. At least it hasn't precipitated any severe debilitating migraines. Get well, friend.
  1:25pm
kat330:

Price is discouraging by am encouraged by this snippet of a review of MDtB: "Incredible music for the discerning fan. If you don't enjoy this disc then the problem is with YOU."
  1:27pm
Brian in UK:

Thanks ngh, thinking of you.
These boys are having a rough time, guessing they are a metal band.

kat330:

Near Bath, eh? Brings to mind that nice Stonehenge scene in "Anvil," such a fine documentary.
  1:32pm
northguineahills:

Miranda July is always a bundle of fun.
  1:34pm
kat330:

If deep, rhythmic breathing doesn't do the job in relieving stress, humor should help.
  1:38pm
Stanley:

Hello Amanda, hello everyone. Better late than never.
@Brian - I once had a horrible headache that lasted over a year. No kiddin'. After trying all sorts of remedies it turned out to be caused by bad neck and back as a result of YEARS of abuse at a desk in front of a computer. Still suffer but manageable with regular visits to the chiro.
  1:39pm
listener james from westwood:

that's a whole flock of posh birds right there :)
  1:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Amanda! Hi everyone, particularly fellow latecomer Stanley!
  1:46pm
kat330:

Matt! How was the reune?
  1:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

It is a lot of info to absorb--that's why you should listen to this EVERY week, so you can always be reminded of what's on GTDR! :)

(I didn't see the playlist on the main page, so I thought you were off this week)
  1:48pm
kat330:

Maybe I'm misremembering, Amanda, but it *seems* like more than a little rain falls on your radio days, even when taking over a Sunday shift.
  1:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

It was very great kat! Almost everyone we hoped to come attended, wonderful weather and good times had by all! (Also got your nice note, thx!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
Amanda:

Hi Matt! Hi Stanley!
  1:49pm
Brian in UK:

@Stanley 'years of abuse' sounds dodgy!! I can sympathise chiro/osteos do the job. I have a knot in my left shoulder; physios are light weight. I used to get headaches for years after concussion. Bundle of laughs. Enough info.
  1:51pm
kat330:

A year on this Simone, Amanda? She sounds weak by comparison.
  1:51pm
Brian in UK:

Loving the mix, Amanda. Gotta go do some cooking.
  1:53pm
kat330:

Oh, see it now. Thanks.
  1:53pm
Anchovy Paste:

Louvin the show today, Amanda.
  1:55pm
kat330:

@Paste: Any relation to Ann Chovie from Ken's comments earlier today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
Amanda:

Nice to see you, AP! Anchovies on pizza 4-EVA
  2:00pm
john:

Ahhh...Jimmie Dale Gilmore. This album is so flippin' good. Been a long time. Thanks, Amanda!
  2:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

I was just talking about anchovies--never had them on pizza, don't have a desire to, but as an adult I've taken to uncooked, salty anchovies out of the tin. They really are very salty and oily, but satisfying when that's what you want.
  2:03pm
Doug S.:

Jimmie Dale! It HAS been too long. Thanks Amanda. (And N.E.P.* in my book.)

*Never enough Prine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
Amanda:

I endorse N.E.P. as a tattoo
  2:06pm
Carmichael:

Truck Drivin' Man was one of my high school band's most requested songs. We could tear that thing up.
  2:07pm
kat330:

At least something the local public station can be counted on for is plenty of Prine, Gilmore and Earle.
  2:07pm
kat330:

And My Morning Jacket, of course.
  2:08pm
lewis:

great set!!
  2:08pm
northguineahills:

Oh Fahey day!

Matt from Springfield:

Great guitaring from Fahey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Amanda:

Hi lewis -- thanks y'all!
  2:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: John Prine's from the Ohio River valley, it would be a suitable fit, even a must-play for a native son.
  2:15pm
kat330:

Yep. Lots of NRBQ, too. A local music hero died recently and just reading all about him in the Louisville Eccentric Observer (LEO): Jason Noble of Rodan and other bands.
  2:18pm
kat330:

Uh, Matt, where did you get that Prine is from the ORV? I knew his career started in Chicago, but wikipedia says he also was born just a few miles from Chicago.
  2:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Good folk block! You should play this stuff more often (not sure about others, but I'm always happy to hear it!)
  2:20pm
kat330:

Now John Mellencamp is only 40 miles up the road from the valley here.

Love? It's all good, Amanda!
  2:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Mike Lupica! A-mazing!
  2:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

I looked up Prine because of "Paradise", his parent/s grew up nearby in Kentucky and he learned about the former coal mining town from visits there. I wondered what state he grew up in, and didn't realize Maywood was all the way up in Chicago. Certainly an appreciation for the ORV, in any case.
  2:26pm
kat330:

Yes, he feels like kin to me.
  2:27pm
kat330:

Oooooh, love this tune!!
  2:28pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm

No, I'm too hungry to sing along.

Awwww, feed the DJ someone!!
  2:31pm

Gorgeous Association, never of this one!
  2:32pm
lewis:

My Dad loved The Association. He also brought home Jethro Tull.
  2:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

heard of, even.
  2:40pm
listener james from westwood:

the hits coming pow-pow-pow out of this playlist make it hard for me to pick a spot during which to go down and get the mail!
  2:40pm
Carmichael:

Now the Vogues are awesome. You're the One is another all-timer for me.
  2:41pm
kat330:

Not a very Vogue sentiment post-feminism, heh! ;)
  2:44pm
Doug S.:

I swear this still sounds like Arthur Godfrey.
  2:45pm
Carmichael:

Maybe Norman will sing Slap Her Down Again, Doug!
  2:45pm
kat330:

Very, very SMART waiter that was.
  2:46pm
kat330:

And yes, Doug, I hear that, too.
  2:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

Interesting spoken word from Norman R, his work is all over the place but I haven't heard him in his own words.
  2:54pm
northguineahills:

See you when you get back, Amanda, great set as per usual!
  2:54pm
Brian in UK:

Quick dip in. At least The Vogues was not 'Five O'Clock World' one of my bestest. A great yodelling record.
  2:55pm
listener james from westwood:

many thanks, amanda, and have a wonderful maine vacation!
  2:55pm
