Listener comments!

  3:16pm
Cheri Pi:

I needed to hear this Fab,
  3:16pm
steve:

In The Court of the Crimson King - great rock album or GREATEST rock album?
  3:17pm
hamburger:

it's okay..

hee hee / hello radioland
  3:17pm
Hint:

just great, k'mon... there are greatest for sure
  3:18pm
Danne D:

Prog Revolution In Effect!!
  3:18pm
hubba:

bong - check; black light - check; passed out buddy with pony tail - check. Thanks for the memories! How's everyone!?
  3:18pm
Ike:

I was disappointed when I finally heard the whole album. It doesn't live up to this song at all. This is the highlight by far.
  3:20pm
Xstat:

all prog music is overrated ;)
  3:20pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

KC!!! Is there a Clay in the house!
  3:21pm
Cheri Pi:

My god it's been a WHILE since I've heard this. THANK YOU AGAIN.
  3:22pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

C'mon guys!!! This is freeform after all!
  3:22pm
fred:

@ngh; if you're still around, better partition. Use something like LinkedIn for professional stuff, and leave some mild dirt there, the corporate hounds will stop there
  3:25pm
northguineahills:

@fred. I was gone reconfiguring my laptop. I have LinkedIn, but I'm curious if there is any "buzz" power w/ G+.
  3:26pm
fred:

That King Crimson track brought be back DECADES ago, and I don't use caps lightly, I just felt like shouting
  3:27pm
steve:

im so jealous of people who experienced the 70s firsthand!
  3:27pm
Cheri Pi:

I was shouting too FRED!
  3:28pm
MentalGiantMan:

AvantProg/RIO never Fail.
  3:29pm
Bas, NL:

Hello Fabio! So rare a get a chance to hear a 'live' failure for me.. It's as good as the archives though! ;)
  3:29pm
Ritchie:

How about some Ab-Soul "Nibiru"
  3:30pm
northguineahills:

Technically, I experienced the 70s first-hand, and I do remember them, but considering I didn't really get into music until I was 16, I didn't really "experience" the 70s.
  3:30pm
BSI:

What MGM said. Yes, that.
  3:32pm
fred:

@ngh: depends on your field, really. LinkedIn is very easily walled off, which may or not be a good thing, depending on your field and the expectations there. In mine it's enough because I tell them I'm a software programmer who reads Virginia Woolf and Colson Whitehead, so they have found enough unusual stuff and stop there. In your case it might not be enough
  3:33pm
BSI:

As I remember it, much of the '70s was spent sleeping in the car whilst waiting in those epic lines at the gas station (see: fuel crisis, odd/even license-plate days, etc)
  3:35pm
northguineahills:

My field as a geographer is all over the place, and can be encompassed by any industry. Some jobs my personal tastes can be a plus, others, not so much.
  3:36pm
still b/p:

...sleeping/waiting in the car...in bell bottoms and an army field jacket.
  3:37pm
BSI:

...and tri-color velour polo shirt with bigass brass-colored zipper pull... we were nothing if not stylin'.
  3:41pm
Xstat:

Those velour polo shirts looks a bit hipster nowdays... :)
  3:41pm
fred:

@ngh: So if you're devious enough maybe you should have different levels of sharing. But maybe you shouldn't bother that much, just refrain from LinkedIn unless you need a clean profile. And keep a separate, "clean" email address for that. You probably won't need it, but just in case...
  3:41pm
steve:

yeah, the 70s seemed like the most stylin of all decades
  3:42pm
Chhhh:

You sound in good form today Fab; nice to hear your voice.. haven't tuned in for a while.
  3:42pm
Jack:

"Hard rock" was to distinguish it from the horrible "soft rock" sound that was on the rise.
  3:43pm
dale:

c'mmon fabs - find a moody blues song you can stomach and play it, too.
  3:44pm
j-No:

Just because Pete Sinfield came up with the name King Crimson does not justify the amount of embarassment they had to suffer from his awful lyrics and song titles. His biggest crime though was the awful production on Roxy Music's debut album. I maintain hope that someday an unadulterated version of it will surface.
  3:48pm
Cheri Pi:

say i t isn't so J-no! is there a magnetic tape sitting around in an old broom closet? Don't let Rick Rubin get it either.
  3:49pm
BSI:

Rick Rubin must be donated to a competent taxidermist immediately, before he does any more damage.
  3:49pm
hubba:

gotta pee... gotta get a bahn mi... could you keep this track going for another half hour?
  3:49pm
northguineahills:

I have already done so, Fred, thanks.
  3:51pm
Cheri Pi:

@BSI- BT experiments with taxidermy, how about a weekend taxidermist who could, you know, bring out his best features?
  3:52pm
Cheri Pi:

Plus I really want his taxidermy stuff out of my kitchen, if I have to deal with RR in there for a few weeks it'd be totally worth it.
  3:55pm
Chris from DC:

Fantastic set here.
  3:55pm
P.S.:

Who do you consider to be a Great lyricist/songwriter that is unpretentious?
  3:55pm
Cheri Pi:

first thought that comes to mind is Nick Drake.
  3:56pm
You Know Where-ki:

"Rubin has been reported to be the producer for Black Sabbath's 2012 album."
  3:56pm
BSI:

Where Rubin and taxidermy are concerned, the ends justify the means. We must get it done. I deputize the first volunteer with a staple-gun and a head full of crazy.
  3:57pm
Cheri Pi:

That's guaranteed to never happen, and what were Slayer thinking? Diversify people!
  3:58pm
@ P.S.:

John Prine
  3:59pm
Cheri Pi:

I can just hear it now when BT wants his allowance. "Goddamint Brian! I want Rick Rubin outta my pantry, I'm sick of him oozing all over my air popper"....but Maaaaaaa!
  3:59pm
P. S.:

Death folk is not greatness.
  4:00pm
Cheri Pi:

ooo, nice Chrome piece.
  4:03pm
rob t.:

Loving today's show! I can feel the plaque being blasted off of my neurons....
  4:05pm
Xstat:

P.S.: Maybe Lourie Anderson? :)
  4:06pm
fred:

What is it about the hate about Rick Rubin, and who would want a stuffed Rick Rubin anywhere in their house anyway? This is not taxidermy, this is make-believe makeover. And if it works, how many copycats would we have on our hands?
  4:07pm
j-No:

I am wondering what would have happened if Giles Giles and Fripp had hired Lou Reed to write their lyrics. I think it would go something like this ...
  4:08pm
rob t.:

Would T-Bone Burnett be next?
  4:08pm
Cheri Pi:

fred that sounds like a night mare.
  4:08pm
still b/p:

Many people enjoy a Toasted Rubin.
  4:09pm
Carmichael:

Hiya Fab a rolla, howdy everyone.
  4:09pm
j-No:

that's just sauer grapes
  4:10pm
Cheri Pi:

heya Carmichael.
  4:11pm
Cecile:

I missed King Crimson...
  4:11pm
Carmichael:

Hi Cheri. My next band will be called Taxidermied Rubin.
  4:12pm
rob t.:

I didn't but I wished I did, Cecile.
  4:12pm
Kyle:

Re: Prog Rock - check out the song "Progressive Rock" by the Gizmos . . .
  4:12pm
Carmichael:

You know how it goes, Cecile. Just hum it now and you're all caught up. Just get ready for Clay when he plays Tavares.
  4:13pm
Cheri Pi:

Conny Plank he is not.
  4:13pm
Cecile:

Steve, seriously, really? The 70s were kind of a drag where I was.
  4:13pm
fred:

Hey Carm! May you bring back some sanity to this playlist. Tall order, I now, but you're welcome to ignore it
  4:13pm
Cheri Pi:

Air-vay =pronunciation.
  4:14pm
Cecile:

I love Heaven Must be Missing An Angel.
  4:15pm
Cecile:

Slate mag is actually running a funny, but loving series on prog music this week. It's quite good. Except they missed out on some of the great covers of prog.

Chrome are astounding.
  4:15pm
rob t.:

The closest I get to prog is The P-Funk. I think they are more prog that folks expect.
  4:16pm
Cheri Pi:

rob t.- I actually came to King Crimson in the 90's via P-funk. how weird is that?
  4:16pm
rrrrrollllling rs:

Or even, 'Airrl-vay' ?
two RR's and one L.
rrrrrrrl
  4:16pm
BSI:

@Cheri: "Conny Plank he is not" = perfect summary.
  4:16pm
Cecile:

Rob t, Osmium is extremely prog. ITA.

I think Rick Rubin was cool for helping out Johnny Cash, and also signing Trouble for a couple of albums.
  4:16pm
VelvetElvis:

Mashed V.U./K.C. Lou Reed & Laurie Anderson in a traktor.
  4:16pm
fred:

Does anyone around here still bothers stuffing music into boxes?
  4:17pm
steve:

really Cecile? i guess i just really like early punk and disco, wish i coulda been there. actually, i think id just love to be in nyc in the late 70s. probably not anywhere else, no other part of the decade.
  4:17pm
BSI:

I was thinking "Perforated Rubin" might have potential...
  4:17pm
Danne D:

Thank you SwagSlaves :)
  4:17pm
Cheri Pi:

OK-I'm calm now Fred. I have to check out High Mountain Tempel more.
  4:18pm
Cheri Pi:

Osmium is like heroin to me, soo good.
  4:18pm
steve:

did anyone see that hilarious article Rick Wakeman wrote recently about the parallels between Yes and Spinal Tap? really entertaining read.
  4:18pm
Carmichael:

Fred, I also grew up in the 70s (late 60s, too!), so I don't know how much sanity I have left. But King Crimson were rock gods back in the day; now, they seem to be viewed as art school poofters. Time is a cruel mistress.
  4:19pm
Cecile:

If I were in NYC, London or LA in the late 70s, or SF in the early 70s, it would have been amazing. Or even in Ann Arbor when Station Manager Ken was around.

Wait...I was in Australia for most of 1976. That part was awesome!!!!!!!
  4:19pm
Danne D:

Gotta link, Steve? :)
  4:19pm
Cheri Pi:

"There Is Nothing Before Me But Thang"
  4:19pm
Cecile:

who thinks of them as art school poofters?!?!?! I think up to Discipline they were the prog band it was even OK for punks to like.
  4:20pm
hubba:

I'm holding to the "McConick-Heeeeeey" thing... I can't see it, not at all.
  4:21pm
steve:

Danne i found it - http://bit.ly/2C0aEl
  4:21pm
dale:

friedkin did a film called 'sorcerer' after the exorcist that was fantastic. trailer for it tried to make it look like exorcist 2, which it was no where even close to being. roy scheider is trying to get lost in south america and takes a job with other misfits driving nitro to put out a gas well fire. crazy good.
  4:22pm
fred:

For the most part I despise prog. But King Crimson sounds like good music to me, and I don't care about anyone who says otherwise.
  4:22pm
hubba:

Haven't seen much of anyhting... started Sweet Movie yesterday, then the family came home. I felt naughty.
  4:22pm
northguineahills:

I was in WV in '76, when I crawled out of the womb. My parents got out w/in 24 months as soon as they could (as did their friends and siblings).
  4:23pm
Cecile:

The Sorcerer soundtrack is one of my very favorite recordings.
  4:25pm
hubba:

some films by the excellent Japanese filmmaker Kaneto Shindo are palying at the Yerba Buena Center of the Arts in SF this weekend and enxt: Kuroneko and Onibaba... for those of us on the West coast.
  4:25pm
Carmichael:

Agreed, Cecile. But It seems to me the younger generation sees them as posers rather than talented musicians. They don't understand Fripp, and Eno is an oddball. How do you answer that kind of logic?
  4:26pm
dale:

that was krautrock-y, if i remember. not popul vuh....
  4:27pm
Carmichael:

Dale, Sorcerer was actually an updated remake of the film The Wages of Fear. They are both excellent movies. I found Sorcerer to be more gripping, especially the bridge-breaking-in-the-monsoon-over-swollen-river scene.
  4:28pm
Cecile:

Seriously? I guess this is a King Crimson kind of town, then.
  4:28pm
fred:

@Cheri: whatever I said wasn't about you, What is High Mountain Temple? My ears are as close to salivating over that as can be allowed before a trip to the ENT.
  4:29pm
steve:

Carmichael, maybe its just because of where i live (north brooklyn) or who my friends are (musicians, artists, and nerds), but most 20s-30s people i know do appreciate King Crimson. you'd be surprised.
  4:29pm
Cecile:

that blows my mind, Carm. I have friends who hate 'em, which I can understand, but they at least respect Fripp.
  4:30pm
Cecile:

steve, I think that was the target audience for Crimso back in the day, too! :D
  4:30pm
dale:

spoiler alert - i loved the last scene where the guy from new york gets off the bus. i thought it was a brilliant movie.
  4:31pm
slugluv1313:

oh WOW!!!!! MUST SEE "Killer Joe"!!!
love seeing actors shatter their images -- like the "Brady Bunch" gals portraying teenage hookers in those 1970s made-for-TV movies :)
and YES King Crimson were and remain AWESOME -- and yeah, they kinda fell into that "progressive rock" category back then (heavy airplay on WNEW-FM, etc.)
perhaps that is why *some* (not all, thankfully!) of the young-uns do not "get it" -- they do not remember a time when major/mainstream radio stations were actually pretty freakin' free-form!!!
  4:31pm
Cheri Pi:

My ears really perked up at High Mountain Tempel- their page says they sound like:The sound of Pacific wind through Torrey Pine needles. The High Sierras. Big Sur Esalen think tanks. The Hippies, The Beats, The Freaks and The Freaky! " they've worked with Acid Mothers Temple etc...
  4:32pm
hamburger:

my first guitar learning book had a preface by robert fripp along with a photo - and my first thought without knowing anything about him was - 'omg - total music nerd'
  4:32pm
northguineahills:

My situation is the same as Steve's, however, I was really into Robert Fripp's instrumental work years before (in my teens) I could get into King Crimson
  4:34pm
Carmichael:

I wanna move in with you guys. People are much more musically tolerant out your way.
  4:34pm
steve:

i picked up a used copy of the Fripp and Eno Evening Star lp a few weeks ago, really nice woodsy ambient + guitar noodles for after work listening
  4:35pm
hubba:

I like parts of Crimson... but do I like the sum of those parts, eh? I think all you need is a little of something. I can't say there is a single artist/band/etc where I fall head over ehels for anyhting they do.
  4:35pm
Cecile:

they are intolerant about different things.
  4:36pm
dale:

i never got into crimson, eventhough i had two albums. i do like fripps 'exposure' though.
  4:36pm
Cheri Pi:

I saw KC perform here with Fripp and the California Guitar trio too, it mesmerized me and I didn't think I was going to enjoy it. A seminal moment for me.
  4:37pm
Cecile:

hubba, my best friend from HS thinks the same way you do. She would never have more than 2 albums from anyone because she could hear more different music that way.
  4:38pm
Cecile:

I pretty much wore out my tape of Discipline, and really enjoy the other albums on vinyl.
  4:39pm
Danne D:

see the power of prog - an hour later and it's all everyone's still commenting about ;)

Prog Revolution 2.0 :)
  4:39pm
Sven:

Hey Fabio, how is your meniscus tear. I just got one, and I aint happy.
  4:40pm
Cecile:

Oh, speaking of music nerd-dom - I need a good pair of compact speakers to use with my turntable. All my other ones are huge dead things now. I'm not a super audiophile, so under $250 for a pair.
  4:40pm
fred:

@Carm: I'm afraid you'd soon move out. We might be tolerant about the most far out things, but we become talibans about the second EP. Waste of time, man
  4:41pm
northguineahills:

I've had multiple meniscus tears, and multiple surgeries, thanks to soccer injuries. They are not fun. Hope Fabio & Sven are walking fine.
  4:41pm
steve:

i haven't listened to it in a while, but Discipline always seemed like a ridiculously blatant Talking Heads ripoff to me
  4:42pm
Cecile:

Sven, I had arthoscopic surgery for mine. It helped a lot.
  4:43pm
Cecile:

It kind of was, but I liked it better than the Heads at the time. I think it was the insane guitars.

Well, hell, I have three Adrian Belew solo albums, so maybe I'm not that impartial.
  4:43pm
Cheri Pi:

"the power of Prog" I like that.
  4:43pm
hubba:

Carm, there was a period her ein town where the signs and lamp posts were dripping with Crimson/Zappa/Beefheart... when that group Hella were making the rounds. There were some noodl-y kids bragging about vinyl copies they scored 15 bucks... I liked Islands, is that what it was called, but about 75%... Television is band where I practically love everything, or Can maybe... Caetano Veloso has been good to me... but still, only about 75% of those albums, lets say, speak to me... the remaining are just filler. Sounds harsh, i know, but same with literature, movies, art... i would love the idea of someone "nailing" it... maybe i'll change my mind when someoen tells me, "you got it right and have shaped the way I see this thing forever." Still waiting... and waiting.
  4:45pm
Cecile:

Beefheart I pretty much like everything (except for those two crappy pop albums). He got it right.
  4:45pm
hubba:

Whatever is on now (Jeck?) is really amazing.
  4:45pm
steve:

that's impressive Cecile... i've never heard any of those, maybe ill have to now
  4:46pm
Cecile:

ITA, hubba.
  4:46pm
Carmichael:

This is my simultaneous 1 year anniversary of rotater cuff surgery and ACL tear. I don't remember ever getting hurt when I actually played soccer. Hang in there, Fab.
  4:47pm
Cecile:

The first two have some fluff to them, but also some great crazy guitar. The third, Desire Caught by the Tail, is really annoying in a good way.
  4:48pm
steve:

haha annoying in a good way, that makes me want to hear it more than if you said it was good
  4:48pm
common:

7 year anniversary of ruptured L4 and surgery coming up soon. Jesus I'm old.
  4:49pm
Cecile:

Now I'm humming Big Electric Cat to myself.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_kk8mGqBj8
  4:49pm
Carmichael:

Beefheart still astonishes me, all these years later. When I saw him live, I always thought he was about to punch someone, or possibly defecate. Then he would play a little clarinet and start the whole cycle over.
  4:50pm
Cheri Pi:

that's a good one to hum!
  4:50pm
Bas, NL:

FYI: Philip Jeck's a taxidermist..
  4:50pm
Cheri Pi:

hahahaha!
  4:51pm
Cecile:

carm, I envy you getting to see him.
  4:53pm
BSI:

This set is the brilliantness.
  4:53pm
steve:

ok, i like everything about this Big Electric Cat video... everything
  4:54pm
ripped off genitals:

Search term help? Italian sculptures that were altered/censored with fig leaves and then later the figs were ripped off leaving barbie/ken like non-genitalia.

Anyone?
  4:56pm
northguineahills:

@common: OW, OW, OW! I've also snapped my ACL a long time ago. I have no cartilage left in my left knee after a post-op infection (and they took it out). My orthopedic doctor ordered me 4 years ago to stop running and from playing soccer, so biking is my only exercise now.
  4:56pm
fred:

Upstairs neighbor starts banging, I have to leave. Great show, Fabio
  4:57pm
Just Wondering:

Has FMU aired the new DEVO tune:
http://soundcloud.com/orchardmktg/devo-dont-roof-rack-me-bro
?
  4:58pm
hubba:

I like this youtube video of the This is the Day song... he looks like he's about ready to bust up, and then pulls it together to keep a poker face. Can you say uncomfortable? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDCHSI2KnAA
  4:58pm
Cecile:

have a great evening, fred!
  5:01pm
fred:

@Cecile: Guess my evening reaches its end, my crazy neighbor needs her rest
  5:02pm
still b/p:

My doc for a torn meniscus a decade ago was like a shooting gallery target -- change direction with every hit:
"Get the operation."
"But I'd prefer to avoid surgery if..."
"Don't get the operation. You don't need it.""
'But I still want to hike and bike.."
"Get the operation."
Wanted to say, "YOU read the books and got the degree. Give me your SINGLE strongest judgment on the freakin' thing."
(I didn't get the op.)
  5:03pm
steve:

does anyone know what Fabio's talking about with the record sequencer? i did the same thing a few years ago...
  5:04pm
Cecile:

sbp, my tear was small and they were able to do arthro. Also, I had fallen a couple of times before and had my knee drained twice. So it was probably the best thing to do.
  5:05pm
still b/p:

Now is mostly OK?
  5:06pm
fred:

@still b/p: you didn't get the op, but how are you doing now? That might be useful to someone thinking about it now
  5:06pm
Xstat:

Cheri Pi: Buy pair of good cans maybe, uner 250
  5:07pm
Cecile:

yeah. about as good as new. now my problems are arthritis in my joints and weak ankles. Oh, yay.
  5:08pm
Cecile:

that was me asking, xstat.
But I like to have the sound filling the house!

Then again, it's not a terrible idea.
  5:12pm
still b/p:

I'm aware of the wonkiness and risk of ouch with certain demands and angles, but I walk hard and bike regularly with no trouble, and when I hike I can climb and descend hard and fast without any trouble. So a vigorous scramble can be fine, yet a few moments on my knees on a floor can bring reminders. I think forgoing the surgery was good, all in all.
