Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

do NOT P-L-A-Y on this radio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm
sinner:

...we all can joke and kid around. Yes. But you are correct. We will never P L A Y on this radio.....

Dave E::

Can we P-R-A-Y on this radio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm

This is a neat tune . . . by the Burnadettes I mean.

A bunch of unreleased Motown gospel was made available as download only a few weeks ago. Great stuff.

Dave E::

1928! That's a while back there, great stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm

All of that Birmingham / Jefferson County quartet stuff from the 1920s and 30s is great.

I often wonder how many of these folks are still alive.

My radio needs power in order to play!

Pre-war? None. Watch for the definitive document on the Birmingham quartet scene coming in the spring, a 3 CD box set of 66 tracks. 30 page liner notes. The New Birmingham Quartet Anthology.

Dave E::

I'm sure even some of the fifties and sixties recordings - most have passed.
  8:23pm
G:

If someone was old enough to sing in 1928, that person is dead now.

1950s/60s performers could go either way here in 2012 -- we're 50-60 years past their performances now, and everyone is therefore either on Social Security or singing in The Choir Eternal.

Dave E::

I wasn't referring to '28 specifically; pass the carrots!

Killer book coming next month, To Do This You Must Know How by Lynn Abbott and Doug Seroff. Tons of information on the pre-war quartet scene, especially in Alabama.

Kevin's progam takes me to the edge of spiritual motivation!
